Obituary: Robert E. Gaume, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born February 19, 1918 at Seneca, KS, the son of Frank Jerome Gaume and Mary Agnes Kerns Gaume. He grew up in Seneca, KS, and Odessa and Hamilton, MO and was a graduate of the Hamilton High School. He later attended the Kirksville State Teachers College, Kirksville, MO and was a graduate of the Stevenson’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning School in Kansas City.

He was united in marriage to Nina B. Hayter on January 2, 1940 at Hamilton. She survives of the home.

Mr. Gaume was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army’s Infantry Division as an instructor with the Kansas National Guard.

He had been a resident of Manhattan since 1950. He first worked at the Kaup Furniture Store as an appliance repairman and at the Appliance Mart. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of the St. Isidore Catholic Student Center and the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, both of Manhattan. He was a charter member of the RSES, a national association for the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janelle Elaine Gaume, in February 1958; his parents; three brothers, Lester, John “Jack” and Edward Gaume; and a sister, Evelyn Stutz.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gaume is survived by a daughter, Virginia J. Joyce, Manhattan; two sons, Robert “Jerry” J. Gaume, and his wife, Kathryn, Barnegat, NJ, and J.L. Gaume, Leavenworth, KS; a sister, Eileen Weimar, Kansas City, MO; ten grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 16, 2007 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hamilton, MO with Father Bob Kerr as celebrant. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Hamilton. The family of Mr. Gaume will receive friends at the church for an hour preceding the service.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hamilton, the Seven Dolors Catholic Schools Lunchroom Program or the St. Isidore Catholic Student Center, both of Manhattan and left in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Florence V. Anderson, 97, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, KS.

She was born February 5, 1910 at Chicago, IL, the daughter of Albert Gustafson and Clara Marie Neil Gustafson. She grew up in Waukegan, IL where she attended the local schools and was a 1929 graduate of the Waukegan High School. She later graduated from the E. Burnham Beauty College, Chicago in 1932.

She was united in marriage to William (Bill) F. Anderson on January 30, 1938 at Waukegan. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1982.

Mrs. Anderson worked as a cosmetologist in Chicago and Evanston, IL for nine years and, along with her husband, co-owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Evanston from 1938 until 1961. In 1962, they moved to Manhattan to own Ideal Cleaners and Tailors in the Aggieville shopping district.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Auxiliaries of the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786 and was a past president of the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Shawn Renee Halley.

Survivors include two sons, William N. Anderson, and his wife, Barbara, Randolph, KS and Tim J. Anderson, and his wife, Cathy, Manhattan; a brother, Clarence Gustafson, Deming, NM; three grandchildren, T. J. Anderson, Roxanne Salas and Robert Anderson; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Moon-Hee Chung officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Aidan Michael Fells, Mulvane, KS, five month old son of Michele L. Fells and Richard L. Winn, passed away Monday, August 6, 2007 in the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita from injuries sustained in an automobile-train accident in Mulvane.

He was born February 20, 2007 at Manhattan. Survivors include his mother, Michele L. Fells, Mulvane; father, Richard L. (Rick) Winn, Springdale, MT; maternal grandparents, Mike and Patricia Fells, Mulvane; paternal grandparents, Richard and Carla Jones, Springdale, MT; great grandmother, Cecile Ingalsbe, Manhattan; great grandparents, Jim and Phyllis Fells, Herington, KS; great great grandmother, Ann Fells, Herington; and great grandmother, Judy Ward, Lolo, MT. Other survivors include aunts, Jennifer Fells, Junction City, KS, Christy Fells and Kelly Fells, both of Mulvane and Katherine Ward, Springdale, MT; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Obituary: Kirk W. Venburg, 50, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, July 30, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan after a sudden illness.

He was born January 29, 1957 at Manhattan, the son of Kenneth W. Venburg and Nancy A. Jett Venburg. He grew up in Manhattan, where he attended the local schools and was a 1975 graduate of the Manhattan High School. He was also a graduate of the Building Trades curriculum at the Manhattan Vocational Technical School. He had been a lifelong Manhattan resident.

Kirk was an over-the-road truck driver for over 20 years and since August 1996 had worked as a supervisor for Manko Window Systems, Manhattan.

He was a member of the Riley County Fish & Game Association and the Kansas Quality Woodworkers Association (KQWA).

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth W. Venburg on June 4, 2002.

Survivors include his mother, Nancy A. Venburg, Manhattan; a brother, Martin J. Venburg, and his wife, Merry, Taneytown, MD; a sister, Amy S. Evans, and her husband, Kevin, Benton, KS; and a nephew, Jacob Evans of Benton.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 3, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Revs. Neil Engle and Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Private graveside inurnment services will be held at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Thelda I. Yapp, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, July 21, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born April 24, 1927 in Jewell County, KS, the only daughter to Bernard Menhusen and Mildred Ruth Hitz Menhusen. She grew up in Jewell County and attended the Jewell Rural High School.

She was united in marriage to Fred E. Yapp on August 15, 1948 at Jewell. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Yapp had been a Manhattan resident since 1953. She was a homemaker and a daycare provider for four of her grandchildren. She was an accomplished seamstress and made most of her daughters’ clothing. She enjoyed quilting and cooking and was known for her wonderful desserts. Thelda was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.

She was a member of the Black Jack American Legion Post Auxiliary, St. George, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Gordon Menhusen.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Yapp is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Yapp, Wamego, KS and Pansy Hoover, and her husband, Thomas, Lenexa, KS; a son, F. Eugene Yapp, and his wife, Joleen, Hoyt, KS; five brothers, Paul and Albert Menhusen, both of Wamego and Junior, Ronnie and Merlyn Menhusen, all of Jewell; eight grandchildren, Bart Bath, Cinnemon Bath Buie, Carrie Pugh Plummer, Luke Pugh, Britton Hoover, Alex Hoover, Amy Yapp and Alycia Yapp; and eight great grandchildren.

A Family Visitation will be from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 26, 2007 in the Jewell Cemetery, Jewell with the Rev. Jim Rice officiating.

Obituary: Shirley L. Ramsey, 76, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, July 21, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born February 26, 1931 at Piedmont, KS, the only child to Orval Ebberts and Harriet Courtney Ebberts. She spent her early childhood years in several small communities in south central Kansas before coming to Manhattan in 1943, when her father became the principal at Eugene Field Elementary School. She was a 1949 graduate of the Manhattan High School.

She was married to Robert F. Ramsey.

Shirley was a homemaker until 1974 when she entered the Food Service Management Program at the Manhattan Area Technical School. Upon her graduation, she went to work as the manager of the Manhattan Junior High School Cafeteria, a position she held from 1975 until her retirement in 1996. She enjoyed retirement spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eagles Auxiliary and the Manhattan Alumni Association, all of Manhattan.

Survivors include four children, Radley Ramsey, Jami Ramsey and David Ramsey, and his wife, Melanie, all of Manhattan and Stuart Ramsey, and his wife, Anne, of Houston, TX; her mother, Harriet Ebberts, Manhattan; and eight grandchildren, Joshua, Owen and Taylor Patterson, Ryan and Cole Ramsey and Paul, Kirk and Courtney Ramsey.

She was preceded in death by her father, Orval Ebberts, in October 1981.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at the funeral home.

Obituary: Ray C. McManis, 85, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

Ray was born March 18, 1922 in Manhattan, KS, to Irwin C. McManis and Isabel Wreath McManis.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in China, Burma, and India during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Erma E. Pawsey on May 25, 1947 in Offerle, KS. She survives.

Mr. McManis worked as a local self-employed building contractor for 35 years. He was a charter member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Lee Pierson V.F.W Post No. 1786 and Elks Lodge No. 1185, all of Manhattan. He was a cheerful and caring man who loved to make people smile. He never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Wayne, Clair, Alex, Paul and fraternal twin, Roy McManis; and three sisters, Mary McEvers, Marge Duvall and Dorothy Corn.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McManis is survived by two sons, Dennis R. McManis, and his wife, Linda, New Orleans, LA and DeWayne McManis, and his wife, Jan, Manhattan; a daughter, Dianne I. Potee, Lee’s Summit, MO; a sister, Thelma Tolliver, Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Tracy, Matthew, Dustin, Daniel, Erin and Kevin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
