Gladson Reed, 63, of Great Bend, died April 4 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 28, 1940, in Stafford County, the son of John Henry Jr. and Mary Nye Reed. He married
Suzi Miller June 24, 1960, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend for three years, coming from Pampa, Texas, he was a salesman for Serfco and B.J. oilfield services. Reed was a member of Central Baptist Church in Pampa. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Jacqueline Huff of College Station, Texas; one brother, Brandon Reed of Holt, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Joshua Reed Huff, Haley Alyssa Huff and Brian Richard Huff. He was preceded in death by one son, James Duane Reed and one brother, Mills Reed. He was an avid drag racing fan and told lots of stories. HAYS - Vera Maxine Richmond Mapes, 83, died April 4 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Hays. She was born Sept. 25, 1920, on a family farm near Codel, the daughter of Harley William and Lilley Hockett Richmond. She was a 1939 graduate of Natoma High School. She married
Keith B. Mapes June 30, 1940, in Stockton. A resident of Hays, coming from San Diego, Calif., Salina, Hays and Natoma, she was employed by Sears in San Diego, IC Bar, K & M Market, Das Koelling Haus and Natoma Co-op, and was custodian for United Methodist Church in Natoma. She was a member of First Christian Church in San Diego, First United Methodist Church in Natoma, United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron, and Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls. Survivors include her husband of Hays; two daughters, SueAnn Woodring of Tempe, Ariz., and Sally Jo Hanhardt of Hays; one sister, Carroll Lynn Choate of Natoma; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She attended schools in Minneapolis and earned a teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College. She married
Norris M. Taylor Sr. Nov. 12, 1942. He died June 24, 1997. A resident of Manhattan since 1993, coming from Wichita and Great Bend, she taught in a one-room school house in Bennington and Miltonvale and worked for Boeing until her marriage. Mrs. Taylor was a member of United Methodist Church in Wichita. Survivors include two sons, Norris M. Taylor Jr. of Lenexa and Cash Taylor of Derby; three daughters, Tamara 'Tami' Yeager of Manhattan, Cynthia Taylor-Dudding of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Terryl Quinn of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Robert Baldwin of Salina; three sisters, Marilyn Thomas of Clay Center, Irene Richardson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Marjorie Dickson of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Gilbert Baldwin; and two sisters, Grace Voran and Fern Bradley. Robert Wedgewood July 22, 1978, at Ellinwood. A resident of Barton County for most of her life, she was a homemaker and also worked for Barton County Community College in the cleaning department and for Great Bend Industries. Mrs. Wedgewood was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Lonnie Lee Marquis of Great Bend, Michael Alan Wedgewood of Kansas City, Mo., and Jeffrey Dean Wedgewood of Lawrence; two daughters, Tina Marie Robertson and Darla Sue Sporn, both of Great Bend; her mother of Hoisington; two sisters, Sharon L. Herrman of Hoisington and Reenea Bryant of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Dwight Dozier officiating. Frank Vondracek Aug. 30, 1950, at Timken. He died July 15, 2000. A resident of Timken, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Vondracek was a member of Holy Trinity Church, St. Ann's Altar Society and Catholic Workman, all of Timken. Survivors include five sons, Steven Vondracek and his wife Susan of Dorrance, Anthony Vondracek, Francis Vondracek and Charles Vondracek and his wife Lila, all of Timken, David Vondracek and his wife Cindy of Wichita; one daughter, Mary Ernst and her husband Robert of St. Joe, Ost; three brothers, Joseph Felder of Kinsley, Vernon Felder of Nekoma and Louis Felder of WaKeeney; two sisters, Bertha Johnson of Andover and Pauline Oborny of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ALBERT- Jack Leroy Richardson, 69, died April 2 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born July 23, 1934, at Great Bend, the son of Harold 'Bay' and Georgia Weiser Richardson. He married
Linda Comer July 22, 1961, in Larned. A lifetime area resident, he was a self-employed electrician working for Valley Electric. Richardson was a member of Albert Methodist Church and the Albert Fire Department. He served on the Albert City Council and was a former baseball coach for the American League baseball program. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his friend, Linda Richardson, of Great Bend; three daughters, Debra Burden of rural Pawnee Rock, Natalie Sharkey of Albert and Brenda Coston of Wichita; two brothers, David Richardson of Albert and Charles Richardson of Great Bend; two sisters, Janice Evert of Mohave Valley, Ariz., and Joyce Kultgen of Albert; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Randy Richardson, and one brother, Dale Richardson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend with the Rev. MACKSVILLE - Herman Schwein, 92, died March 31 at Lakepoint Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Augusta. He was born Nov. 23, 1911, at Hoisington, the son of Henry and Johannah Meier Schwein. A resident of Macksville, coming from Hoisington, he was a former owner of Herman's Tavern of Hoisington. Schwein was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 286 and charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428, all of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. Survivors include one son, Rick Schwein of McAllen, Texas; one daughter, Kim Spickard of Wichita; one sister, Thelma Hagner of Salina; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Leo Schwein, Emanuel Schwein, Jake Schwein, Emil Schwein, Raymond Schwein, Paul Schwein, and Leroy Schwein; and one sister, Elsie Riley. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hoisington cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 286 and VFW Post 7428. James Darcey July 10, 1937, in Pawnee Rock. He died Aug. 28, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since 1978, coming from rural Pawnee Rock, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Darcey was a member of First United Methodist Church of Great Bend, where she was a special friend of Fanshier-Knipe Circle, and a former member of 20th Century Club of Pawnee Rock. Survivors include three sons, Lowell Darcey of Great Bend, Lynn Darcey of Newton and Ronald Darcey of Nashville, Ark.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Dianna Marie Lamb, 47, of Great Bend, died March 26 at an Ellinwood care facility. She was born April 11, 1956, at La Crosse, the daughter of George Afton and Beatrice Cashman Couch. She was a 1974 graduate of Great Bend High School. She married
Danny Lamb. They were divorced. A resident of the Great Bend community most of her life, she worked as a nurses aide. She was a member of the Christian Church. Survivors include one son, Jason Lamb of Wichita; one daughter, Danielle Hunt of Ellinwood; three brothers, David Couch of Pearl City, Hawaii, Warren Couch of Great Bend and Darrel Couch of Mayetta; one sister, Marcia Potts of Mayetta; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 29 at Potawatomi Pentecostal Church west of Mayetta. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was a member of First Christian Church, was a Boy Scout leader and a volunteer at the McPherson County Teen Center. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Travis Iverson and Kevin Iverson, both of McPherson; one daughter, Amy Jantz of McPherson, and his parents of Emporia. She was a member of St. Anns Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Olmitz. Survivors include a son, John Hickey and his wife, Charlene, of Olmitz; a sister, Frances Blazek of Claflin; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank Steiner, Gus Steiner, Fritz Steiner, Billy Steiner and Bob Steiner; two sisters, Marie 'Sis' Scheuler and Sylvia 'Tibbie' Menzer.
