Obituary: Eva M. Henry-Stepp, 83, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at her home after an extended illness.
She was born March 29, 1924 at Concordia, KS, the daughter of Louis Albert Gagnon and Clara Gardner Gagnon. She grew up in Cloud County and was a 1944 graduate of the Aurora, KS High School. She later attended the Western Union Teletype School at Springfield, MO and worked for Western Union at West Plains, MO and Abilene, KS for three years.
She was united in marriage to Delbert L. Henry on June 28, 1945 at White Church, MO. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1988. She was later married to Henly Eugene “Gene” Stepp, Jr. on November 24, 1989 at Concordia. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Henry-Stepp lived in Concordia for many years and was a homemaker and worked several years at the Sears-Roebuck store. She had been a Manhattan resident since March 1990.
She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan and was active in the Altar Society, Budget Shop and the Food Pantry. Other memberships included the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 Auxiliary and the Riley County Senior Service Center. While living in Concordia, she was an active member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the V.F.W Post Auxiliary.
In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Henry-Stepp was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Melvin Gagnon; and a sister, Olivine Fisher.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, H. Joe Henry, and his wife, Judy, Highland, IL and Timothy Henry, Houston, TX; four daughters, Sharon Cotter, and her husband, Bob, Belton, MO, Janet Henry, Houston, TX, Linda Henry, Hillsboro, KS and Jacque Stepp, Manhattan; four grandchildren, Karen Lally, Tammy Smith, Crystal Deeds and Anthony Stepp; two great grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Cohen Michael Gagahgen; four step children, Gordon, Mike, Pat and Jeff Stepp, all of Manhattan; and three step grandchildren, Curtis, Logan and Melinda Stepp.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 22, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Keith Weber officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday in the St. Concordia Cemetery, Concordia, KS with the Rev. Barry Brinkman officiating.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 21, 2007 at the funeral home followed by a family visitation at 7:30 p.m.

Obituary: Minnie L. Peoples, 66, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, December 13, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
She was born October 1, 1941 at Columbus, MS, the daughter of Babylove and Miranda Peoples. She grew up in the Mississippi and Alabama areas, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Reform, AL High School.
Mrs. Peoples lived in Champagne and Decatur, IL areas for many years before moving to Manhattan in 1998. She had worked as a cook.
Survivors include her husband, Alonzo Williams, of the home; a son, Frederick Peoples, Boulder, CO; two daughters, Andrea Peoples and Vivian Peoples, both of Manhattan; a brother, the Rev. Joe Lee Peoples, Columbus, MS; two sisters, Mary Peoples and Rosie Mae Peoples, both of Decatur, IL; and one grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, December 21, 2007 in the Fairview Cemetery, southwest of Manhattan with the Rev. Carl Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.

Obituary: Ronald F. Freed, 74, Rossville, KS, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2007 in the St. Francis Hospital, Topeka.
He was born June 1, 1933 near Courtland, KS, the son of Glenwood Freed and Helen Goodwin Freed. In 1941 he moved with his family to a farm near Scandia, KS, where he attended the Scandia schools and later helped his father on the family farm.
Mr. Freed lived in Manhattan from 1980-1983 and in Lawrence from 1983 until moving to Rossville in 2002. While living in Lawrence, he attended the Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gaylord and Roger Freed; and a sister, Loretta Kirk.
Survivors include two sisters, Glenna Clark, and her husband, Paul, Topeka, KS and Judith Hall, Albert Lee, MN.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2007 in the Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, KS with the Rev. Bob Leiste officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

Obituary: Albert P. (Pete) Dempsey, Junior passed away Sunday morning, the 2nd of December, 2007.BornNovember 15, 1920, in Wichita, Kansas, Pete was the only son of Albert P. Dempsey, Senior and Effy Barnes. He attended college in Wichita, Kansas, where he met Ruth Alice Coffin, his wife of 65 years. An enlisted veteran of the Second World War, Pete received a Regular Army Commission in 1948 after graduating from Wichita State University. He served two tours of duty in the Republic of Viet Nam and served as Professor of Military Science at Wichita State University prior to retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1974. A resident of the Manhattan area since 1962, Pete is survived by his wife, Ruth Dempsey, his daughter, Barbara Diane Taylor and her husband, John Taylor of Manhattan; by his son, Tom Dempsey of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; by his five grandchildren, Dustin Taylor, Matt Taylor, Patrick Dempsey, Siobhan Dempsey and Michael Dempsey; and by his niece, Patricia Vest of Columbia, South Carolina. Pete was preceded in death by his oldest son, William Joel Dempsey, who died in 1976.
Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2007 in the Community Room of the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center with The Rev. Moon-Hee Chung officiating. Private family inurnment services will be at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, southeast of Manhattan.

Obituary: George McKay, 90, Wamego, KS passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2007 in the Valley Vista Nursing Home, Wamego.
He was born December 30, 1916 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of George McKay and Anna Wiefering McKay. He grew up a farm near Amelia, OH and attended schools in Batavia, OH. He was a 1935 graduate of the Batavia High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy for over 3 ˝ years.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn C. Woods on September 10, 1942 at Newport, KY. She survives of the home.
Mr. McKay worked as a self-employed handyman. He lived in the Spring Field Township, near Cincinnati, for many years and had been a Wamego resident since Thanksgiving 2004.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McKay is survived by a daughter, Linda Johnson, and her husband, David, Wamego; two grandchildren, Tyler D. Johnson and Melissa J. Burt; and two great grandchildren, Bridgette L. Johnson and Paxton D. Burt.
Private family funeral services will be Monday, November 26, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with burial in the Wamego City Cemetery, Wamego.

Obituary: Lillian O. Ellsworth, 91, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, November 9, 2007 at her home.
She was born November 10, 1915 at Cleveland, OH, the daughter of Fred Gatzke and Emma Dey Gatzke. She grew up in Cleveland and attended the local schools.
She was united in marriage to Louis D. Ellsworth on August 31, 1941 at Cleveland. He preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Ellsworth had been a Manhattan resident since 1946. She was a summa cum laude graduate in Education from Kansas State University and had also attended post graduate classes. She taught school for several years and was the librarian at Northview Grade School for over 17 years. She retired in 1983.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ellsworth was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Harry and William Gatzke.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Blake Kuppinger, and her husband, Mitchell, Arlington, TX; a son, George A. Ellsworth, and his wife, Mara, Brookline, MA; a brother, George Gatzke, Cleveland, OH; three grandchildren, Dane Kuppinger, Paige Hixson and Max Ellsworth; and two great grandchildren, Quetzal and Sorrel Kuppinger.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 14, 2007 in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. R. C. “Cam” McConnell officiating. Obituary: Gordon L. Wittman, 59, Largo, FL, formerly of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2007 in Manhattan.
He was born July 23, 1948 at Quinter, KS, the son of Nick Wittman and Josie Goetz Wittman. He grew up in Park, KS and attended the local schools. He had been a longtime Manhattan resident until moving to Florida in March 2007.
He was united in marriage to Bonnie L. Leonard on June 15, 1979 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.
Gordon worked as a salesman at Kaup Furniture in Manhattan for many years. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Wittman.
In addition to his wife, Gordon is survived by a sister, Angeline Post, and her husband, Art, Manhattan; nephews, Greg Post, and his wife, Nancy Jane, Nashville, TN and Steve Post, and his wife, Melissa, Southlake, TX; nieces, Amy Everett, and her husband, Brad, Wamego, KS and Nancy Haile, and her husband, Howard, Manhattan; sister-in-law, Berniece Powers, and her husband, Ron; three nephews, Dexter Wittman, Bruce Wittman and Rex Wittman; niece, Sharon Kuntz; and 14 great nephews and nieces.

She was born March 1, 1921 at Rolla, MO, the daughter of Carl J. Mueller and Mabel E. Hirsch Mueller. She grew up in Rolla, where she attended the local schools and was a 1939 graduate of the Rolla High School.
She was united in marriage to Harry O. Land on December 23, 1940 at Rolla. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1976.
Mrs. Land lived in several communities while following her husband’s military career.
She later lived in Evansville, IN from 1954 until 1978 and in Coldwater, MI from 1978 until moving to Manhattan in 1987.
While living in Evansville, she worked as a secretary for the Lockyear Business College.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Auxiliary, Manhattan.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Land was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Eugene, Carl, Fred, Lawrence, Paul, Arthur and Eugene Mueller; two sisters, Laura Goldberg and Norma Clayton; and a granddaughter, Luella F. Kunz.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Kay Kunz, Manhattan; a granddaughter, Mary K. Land-Sargent, Salina; and a great grandson, Landon Allen Kunz, Salina.
