PUEBLO, Colo. - John F. Eveleigh, 89, of Pueblo, Colo., passed away, Tuesday, July 13, 2004. Survived by his wife, Donleta Eveleigh; children, Ken (Phyllis) Eveleigh of Morrison, Colo., Bob (Sandi) Eveleigh of Belton, Texas, Gary (Lolita) Eveleigh of Pueblo, Colo., and Cheryl (David) Cantrell of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Franklin Eveleigh, and Autumn Charlene Eveleigh; sisters, Myrtle Eveleigh, Pearl Birzer, Florence Saunders, Ruby Bramel, and Dorothy McIntyre; and brother, Robert Eveleigh. preceded in death by his sisters, Maud Habiger, and Jessie Pedigo; and brother, Woodrow Eveleigh. EL DORADO - Oscar L. Evenson, 85, of El Dorado, passed away Wednesday, July 14. Mr. Evenson was born northwest of Eureka on Jan. 14, 1919. He was the son of the late Christopher and Lena (Erickson) Evenson. He was one of 10 children. Oscar farmed and he also worked in the oil fields around El Dorado and retired from the refinery in El Dorado. On Dec. 21, 1947, he married
Doris Marie Simmons in Emporia. She preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 1987. A grandson, Don Evenson, preceded him in death as well. He is survived by sons Logan Evenson and his wife Barbara of Augusta, Arne Evenson and his wife Raylin of Pretty Prairie, and Ray Evenson and his wife Susan of El Dorado; daughters, Sharon Dennis and her husband E.C. of Great Bend, Mary Patton and her husband Daryl of Garnett, and Lois Carson and her husband David of El Dorado; sisters, Lida Moreland of Wichita, Louise Hamby of Parker, Colo., Fern Wernli of Gridley and Leona Stroud of Wichita; grandchildren, Tina Evenson, Julie Tipton, Greg Evenson, Kari Hutchinson, Page Pound, Melissa and Miranda Patton, Jeramy and Amy Evenson; great-grandchildren Abby, Garrett and Emma Tipton. LA CROSSE - Melvin A. 'Sonny' Jacobs, 69, died July 14 at his home in La Crosse. He was born Dec. 7, 1934, at Pfeifer, the son of Andrew and Mary Jacobs Jacobs. He married
Wanda Ochs Nov. 24, 1954, in Great Bend. A resident of La Crosse for 15 years, coming from Great Bend, he worked for Stone Sand Company as a heavy equipment operator before his retirement. He was a member of the Catholic faith. Survivors include his wife of La Crosse; four sons, Melvin G. Jacobs and Paul A. Jacobs, both of Great Bend, Theodore 'Teddy' J. Jacobs of Goodland and Patrick L. Jacobs of Bison; one daughter, Diana Lynn Bakeberg of Gastonia, N.C.; two brothers, Delmas 'Jack' Jacobs of Hays and Darrell Jacobs of Wichita; three sisters, Evelyn Bieker of Hays, Shirley Millikin of Neosho, Mo., and Norene Jacobs of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one sister, Shelbia 'Sis' Huffhines; and two grandchildren, Kimberly Jacobs and Elizabeth Jacobs. John A. Graham Oct. 13, 1940, at Liberal. He died May 7, 1977. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Liberal and Larned, she was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, FS Chapter of PEO, StoneRidge Ladies Golf Association, 'Bloomer Girls' Sewing Club, Kansas State President's Club and several bridge clubs. Survivors include two sons, James J. Graham and wife Celinda of Wichita, and John R. Graham and wife Mary Lee of Manhattan; one daughter, Marsha Protinsky and husband Howard of Hardy, Va.; one sister, Ruby Feese of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Paige Graham Protinsky, Jeff Graham and wife Kristen, Blake Graham and wife Traci, and Nichols Graham and wife Amy. HOISINGTON - Sandra L. Newkirk, 63, died July 7 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born June 5, 1941, at Ellis, the daughter of Walt and Grace Mickelson Crist. She married
Frank Newkirk Dec. 26, 1970, at Great Bend. A resident of Hoisington since 1970, moving from Great Bend, she was a homemaker and CNA. Mrs. Newkirk was a member of the Tuesday Night Bowling League in Hoisington. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Richard Newkirk, Hutchinson, and Travis Newkirk, Hoisington; one daughter, Debi Von Lintel, Wamego; her father of Pawnee Rock; four brothers, Dale Carr Jr., Pawnee Rock, John Carr, Great Bend, Gordon Crist, Texas, and Ed Crist, Wilson; four sisters, Janet Flint, Great Bend, Gloria Callaway, Pratt, Tonia Appel, Larned, and Karen Gilkey, Hutchinson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Scott Scheuerman. Funeral has taken place, with burial at Hoisington cemetery. Kenneth Pellett. They divorced. She was a resident of Boulder County since 1975. Survivors include three sons, Scott Pellett, David Pellett and Tim Pellett; one daughter, Christina Wyhe, Dodge City; four brothers, Leonard Miller, Kenneth Miller and James Miller, all of Great Bend, and Curtis Miller, Salina; three sisters, Judy Blanchard, Khabarovsk, Russia, Mary Ramsey, Great Bend, and Sharon Miller, Dubuque, Ill.; and one grandson. Herbert F. Carrier, 80, of Great Bend, died July 12 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Sullivan County, Tenn., the son of Roy T. and Lennie Osborne Carrier. He married
LaVina C. Hoffman Dec. 3, 1945, at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 1953, coming from Bluff City, Tenn., he was a self-employed certified welder, owning Carrier Welding. He also worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Bristol, Tenn.; O'Neill Tank Company for 23 years; Papay Water Service and was later at Fuller Brush as a security guard before retirement. Carrier was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, both of Great Bend, and the American Motorcycle Association. A U.S. Air Force veteran from 1942-1945, he was a corporal with the 20th 444 Bombing Group. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, David Carrier of Albert and Thomas Carrier of Mustang, Okla.; two daughters, Vickie Brown, Great Bend, and Nancy Tiede, Parsons; two brothers, Bruce Carrier, Bluff City, and Obia Carrier, Bristol; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy T. Carrier Jr. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Joan Kuhlman Dec. 26, 1957, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Olmitz. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he worked as a machinist and welder. Demel was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Tim Demel, Olmitz, and Terry Demel, Great Bend; a daughter, Judy Demel, Albert; five brothers, Lawrence Demel, Hoisington, Bernard Demel, Norman, Okla., Ambrose Demel, Hoisington, Harold Demel, Hutchinson and Edwin Demel, Lenexa; three sisters, Kathleen Chacon and Theresa Bieberle both of Great Bend, and Laurie Lane, Hoisington; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. HOLYROOD -Chester H. Nienke, 80, died July 9 at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit. He was born Oct. 23, 1923, at Kanopolis, the son of Frederick and Mata Erhardt Nienke. He married
Wanda Fern Strange on May 24, 1946, at Lincoln. She died April 6, 1978. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, residing in Holyrood, he was owner/operator of Chet Nienke Lease Service, providing service as an oil field contractor. Nienke was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 200, and served at various times as a city council member, mayor and school board member, all in Holyrood. Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Fankhauser, Garden City, Barbara Hogan, Jamestown, ND, and Janet Kempke, Ellsworth; two brothers, Amos Nienke, Wichita, and Ervin Nienke, Holyrood; one sister, Lola Vidrickson, Salina; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by sisters Helen Haase, Emma Nienke and Nelda Taylor, and brothers Raymond Nienke and Leonard Nienke. A closed casket service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. John Sharp officiating. Interment will be at St. Peter Lutheran Church cemetery with military rites by the Holyrood American Legion. MANHATTAN - Gary F. Gillaspie, 63, died July 2 at his home in Manhattan. He was born July 12, 1940, at Claflin, the son of John Robert Gillaspie and Virginia Carothers Gillaspie. He grew up in Claflin and attended the local schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Gillaspie worked for over 27 years with the Kansas State University Police Department. He retired at the rank of lieutenant in 1996. After his retirement from the Campus Police, he worked at the First Bank and later with Peterson Clinical Lab of Manhattan. Gillaspie was a member of Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Manhattan Shrine Club and was a past member of Lafayette Lodge No. 16, A.F.&A.M., all of Manhattan, and the Isis Shrine and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Salina. He is survived by a son, Rob Gillaspie of Fort Collins, Colo. Cremation is being planned. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Claflin cemetery. Clarence M. Mall on July 7, 1976, at Tescott. He died Nov. 3, 1987. A long-time Ellinwood resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Mall was a member of United Methodist Church, Rebecca Lodge, both of Ellinwood, Eastern Star No. 487 of Claflin, Heritage Club and volunteer worker at the Ellinwood Thrift Shop. Survivors include a son, Donald Dee Walford, Owasso, Okla.; a daughter, Patricia Irene Schartz, Ellinwood; stepdaughter, Lucille Reeder, Wichita; sister, Helen Erwin, Wichita; stepsons Orville Mall of Seattle, Wash., and Roy Mall of McAllen, Texas; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
