HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. - Dorothy Mefford, 74, died Oct. 27 at Hot Springs Village, Ark. She was born Feb. 15, 1930, at Iola, the daughter of James Francis and Ollive Gertrude Sullivan Williams. She was married to Joe Mefford. She was a resident of Hot Springs Village, Ark. Mefford was a member of First Christian Church of Iola; life member of Beta Sigma Phi; served on Board of Directors of Hot Springs Women's Bowling Association; Member Dizzy Dames and Wednesday Night mixed bowlers. Survivors include husband, Joe Mefford of the home; two sons, Charles Mefford of San Antonio, Texas, and Steven Mefford of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter, Marcia Davidson of Conroe, Texas; one brother, Jim Williams of Murfreesboro, Ark.; one sister, Martha Young of Bella Vista, Ark; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Williams. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Chapel in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery, in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Dan R. East
1949 - 2004
Dan R. East, 55, of Great Bend, died Oct. 25, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1949, at Great Bend, the son of Russell and Vera Irene Carpenter Partridge. He was married to Sharon Kay Fox on Feb. 14, 1993, at Larned. She survives. He was a resident of Great Bend since 1992, coming from St. Louis, Mo. East was a retired U.S. Army veteran serving two tours in the Vietnam War with the rank of E-5. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of the home; his mother, Irene East of St. Charles, Mo.; his step-mother, Beverly Partridge of Great Bend; two daughters, Dawn R. East, and Deborah R. Ellis, both of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Jerry D. East of Hutchinson, and Thomas E. East of St. Charles, Mo.; three sisters, Barbara A. Hansen of St. Peters, Mo., Patricia K. Wolf of Russell, and Deborah S. Manley of Hoisington; and four grandchildren, Courtney R. Havens, Jessie J. Havens, Taylor D. Havens and Troy D. Havens. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Partridge, his step-father, John C. East and two brothers, Robert Allan East and Terry L. Partridge. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Russell officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery with Military Committal Rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jessie Marie Sell Jensen
1923 - 2004
Jessie Marie Sell Jensen, 81, died Oct. 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 12, 1923, at Bison, the daughter of John Wesley and Annie Duckworth Woods. She married Frank J. Sell in 1939 in Chase County. He died in 1943. She married Arno V. Jensen on June 10, 1944, in Great Bend. He died Aug. 6, 1982. A resident of Great Bend most of her life, she was a clerk for Christian Supply Store. Survivors include five sons, Frank Sell of Hutchinson, Jim Jensen of Valley Center, Gary Jensen of Pierre, S.D., Robert Jensen of Great Bend, and Rodney Jensen of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; four daughters, Carol Malone of Mulberry, Joyce Wapelhorst and Janis Reed, both of Great Bend, and Suzanne Gaschler of Ellis; two brothers, Robert Woods of Tonganoxie and David Woods of Horton; two sisters, Goldie Kester of Ava, Mo., and Dorothy McCroskey of Springfield, Mo.; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Georgianna Jensen; two brothers, Ira Ervin Woods and John Wesley Woods; and five sisters, Anna Mae McCall, Ruby Holiman, Roxie Sinklier, Virginia Surrell and Melva Heronemus. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Georgia B. Mullenix Grizzell

CLAFLIN - Georgia B. Mullenix Grizzell, 87, died Oct. 25, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. She was born Jan. 12, 1917, in Chase, the daughter of George and Lola Fuson Mullenix. She married Robert E. Grizzell on June 20, 1936, at Great Bend. He preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1990. She was a homemaker and a cafeteria supervisor for the Claflin public schools for several years, and operated restaurants in Claflin and Russell. She was a lifetime Claflin resident, living the past six years in Lawrence Mrs. Grizzell was a member of the United Methodist Church and Holyrood O.E.S. No. 420, both of Claflin. Survivors include two sons, Ken Grizzell and his wife, Suzanne, of Lawrence, and George Grizzell and his wife, Dorothy, of Preston, Idaho; two brothers, Stan Mullenix of Lawrence and Leonard Mullenix of Roswell, N.M.; three grandchildren, Lisa Davis and her husband, Chris, of Lawrence, Matt Grizzell and his wife, Deborah, of Aurora, Ill., and Adam Grizzell of Preston, Idaho; and seven great-grandchildren, Bobby, Carly, and DJ Davis, and Keaton, Haley, Cole and Austen Grizzell. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin Mullenix, Clarence Mullenix and Bernard Mullenix. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Claflin cemetery in Claflin, with the Rev. Sarah Hickson de Salazar officiating. Visitation will be 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. James Donald Ward

James Donald Ward, 70, of Great Bend, died Oct. 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Mar. 24, 1934, at Brandon, Colo., the son of William Alios and Iva Faye Kendall Ward. He married Emily Henning on Apr. 14, 1974, at Springfield, Colo. He was a resident of Great Bend, where he was a retired truck driver. Ward was a member of the U.S. Navy and the Knights of Columbus in Lamar, Colo. Survivors include his wife, Emily Ward of Great Bend; four sons, William Joseph Kathman of Las Vegas, Nev., James Richard Kathman of Great Bend, Richard Joseph Kathman of Garden City, and David Ward of Atlanta, Ga.; five daughters, Jane Berg, Sue Kathman, April Ward, and Misty Ward, all of Great Bend, and Rhonda Machin of Riley; one brother, Gene Ward of Kit Carson, Colo.; six sisters, Mary Kissell of Pubelo, Colo., Helen Sparks of Greeley, Colo., Alta Hubbard of Avondale, Colo., Lila Laughlin of Sequin, Texas, Christina Fulton of Las Animas, Colo., and Carol Merriott of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Ward, and one sister, Juanita Johnson. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at Kansas Veterans' cemetery in Winfield at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, in care of Charter Funerals. Ava LaVerne Green
1918 - 2004
ST. JOHN - Ava LaVerne Green, 86, died Oct. 25 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born May 21, 1918, at Radium, the daughter of George Nelson and Naomi Gleason. She graduated from Radium High School in 1936. She was a resident of Radium until 1958, moving to St. John, where she was a secretary for Stafford County Extension Office and St. John schools. She also farmed. Green was a member of 4-H Club, Hesperian Club and E.H.U. Club. Survivors include one daughter, Karen Bauer of Wichita; seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Green; two sons, Warren Green and Gary Green; one brother, Berle Gleason; and one sister, Marieda Keenan. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in St. John, with Bob Gleason officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home. Maynard Dane Oliverius
1927-2004
WICHITA - Maynard Dane Oliverius, 76, died Oct. 24 at his residence in Wichita. He was born Nov. 30, 1927, in Galatia. He married Patricia Smith in 1961 at Wichita. She died in 1976. He married Esther in 1978 at Wichita. She died in 1985. A resident of Wichita since 1962, coming from Galatia, he was a heavy machinery operator for Eby Construction of Wichita. Oliverius was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, American Legion, and Local Union No. 101. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Laffoon and Michelle Oliverius, both of Wichita, and Marcella Hoeffner of Golden, Colo., and four grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview cemetery in Galatia, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating and with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428 and American Legion 286. John W. Broils Jr.
1910-2004
John W. Broils Jr., 94, of Great Bend, died Oct. 21 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born June 1, 1910, in Council Grove, the son of John W. Sr. and Hortense Campbell Broils. He married Lou Franklin Jan. 15, 1938, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1942, coming from Russell, he worked for Merings & Son Service Station and also worked for Great Bend Park Department, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Myers Chapel AME Church, serving on the Steward Board and as a chairman of the Trustee Board. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Marion Broils and wife Wanda of Kansas City, Mo., and William Broils and wife Joyce of Topeka; one daughter-in-law, Billie Broils of Larned; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Broils; eight brothers and two sisters. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Loyse Clay officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday, all at the funeral home. HOISINGTON - Marvel Elizabeth 'Patti' Smith, 83, died Oct. 21 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. She was born March 17, 1921, at Simla, Colo., the daughter of B. Rex and Edith Venora Pease Hixson. She married Lawrence R. Smith Jan. 2, 1946, at New York, N.Y. He died July 22, 2000. A resident of Hoisington since 1971, coming from Phoenix, Ariz., she was a homemaker and former American Airlines stewardess. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Chapter GG of PEO, both of Hoisington, and McConnell Singers of Phoenix. Survivors include one son, Bradford L. Smith of Hoisington; two daughters, Marlena Rae and husband Dr. Steven Miller of Bismarck, N.D., and Terri Elizabeth Anderson of Hollywood, Fla.; three brothers, Lee Merle Hixson of Lamar, Colo., George Rex Hixson of Pendleton, Ore., and Calvin Loren Hixson of Fowler, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, and from 1 p.m. until service time Monday at the church. John Robles
1948-2004
Juan J. 'John' Robles, 56, of Great Bend, died from cancer on Oct. 17, 2004, at Robert J. Dole Veterans Hospital in Wichita. John retired from the United States Armed Forces with his last tour of duty being at Fort Riley near Junction City. In 1995, John graduated cum laude (with honors) from Kansas State University with a degree in Business Administration, focus in Finance and Accounting. On Jan. 6, 2003, John became a part of the staff at We Care Clinic as case manager. John truly loved his job, and loved helping people. He dedicated his life to his clients and friends, and worked tirelessly to make others' lives better. He also worked to make Christmas brighter for needy children, working with Farmer's Bank & Trust in the 'Light Up A Child's Christmas.' John will also be remembered for his work with the Cinco de Mayo celebration, the diabetes walk and support group, and in the way that he supported the providers and the nurses in their work at the clinic. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Ft. Riley National cemetery, in Ft. Riley. Memorials are suggested to We Care Clinic, 1905 19th St., in Great Bend. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at St. Rose Catholic Church, officiated by Father Reggie Urban.
