Carolyn Kirkman Hanes, 70, of Great Bend, died Oct. 6 at Vyne Hospice in Wichita. She was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Shawnee, Okla., the daughter of Edward Sparks and Pearl Balleu Nowles. A resident of Great Bend for 50 years, coming from Oklahoma, she was a clerk for Kitchen Cupboard for 11 years and a paraprofessional for USD 428 for three years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild and Bridge Club, all of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Michael Wayne Kirkman of Great Bend; two daughters, Kristie Peacock and Kathy Herman, both of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Thayer. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. HOISINGTON - Arthur N. Hickel, 85, died Oct. 7 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. He was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Odin, the son of Joseph and Catherine Courange Hickel. He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1938. He married
LaVerne Carman on March 28, 1990, in Hays. A resident of Hoisington for 14 years, coming from Great Bend, he was a prominent business man in Great Bend and former president of Kansas Trucking Association. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and St. Patrick Catholic Church, both of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Steven Hickel of Shawnee and Clifford Hickel of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Sharon Atkinson of McPherson and Janis Bunker of Lawrence; one sister, Elsie Hogan of Great Bend; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lori Suzanne Shuck, 33, born March 15, 1971, in Wichita, died Oct. 2 in San Antonio, Texas. Survivors include her parents Gary and Cheryl Shuck of San Antonio; uncles and aunts Brian and Schela Carlton and family of Manhattan, and Terry and Shirley Robl and family of Ellsworth; and grandmother, Mrs. Pauline Sheeks of Ellinwood. LARNED - Wilmer Otte, 93, died Oct. 5 at Larned Healthcare Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Great Bend, the son of Will C. and Georgia Miller Otte. He married
Leah A. Dorfshaffer on Jan. 1, 1935, in Great Bend. A resident of Larned since 2000, coming from Great Bend, he was a retired farmer and stockman. Otte was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and was a past member of the Elks Club, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Dale and wife Karen Otte of Larned; one daughter, Lois and husband Vernon Schimmels of Clinton, Okla.; two brothers, Orville Otte and Loyal Otte, both of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Otte; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Otte Finger. Mary Louise Guesnier, 76, of Great Bend, died Oct. 5 at her home. She was born May 6, 1928, in Topeka, the daughter of Granville T. and Mary Potter McCubbin. She married
Joseph Willard Guesnier on Sept. 3, 1948, in Topeka. He died Aug. 28, 2001. A resident of Great Bend since 1952, coming from Topeka, she was a retired book keeper for Santa Fe Pipe and Supply. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include three sons, Daniel Guesnier, Shawn Guesnier, both of Great Bend, and Tracy Guesnier of Pawnee Rock; three daughters, Kaleha Jones of Boise, Idaho, Renee Nelson of Grandview, Wash., and Kelly Guesnier of Great Bend; one sister, Berniece Miller of Platt City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Miles. Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with a vigil at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Rene Guesnier and Reginald A. Kathryn M. Jackson

EUREKA - Kathryn Margaret Palmer Jackson, 93, died Sept. 25, 2004, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. She was born May 8, 1911, at home on Eighth Street in Kansas City, Mo., to Edgar Homer and Ida Lucina Wickersham Palmer. Kathryn was a member of the Upper Fall River Lutheran Church. She was raised in Fall River, and later attended Pittsburg State University. After receiving her certification in education, Kathryn taught school in rural Greenwood County for four years. On June 1, 1932, she was united in marriage to Harry 'Hap' E. Jackson of rural Greenwood County, in Marion. He died on June 13, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Drake of Wichita, and her husband, Raymond; and Margie Swisher of Independence, and her husband, Brian; one son, Edd Jackson of Great Bend, and his wife, Pam; seven grandchildren, Scott and Troy Drake, Brianna and Russell Swisher, Chris and Daylin Short, Jeff Jackson; and one sister, Ida Grace Armor of Chico, Calif. Kathryn was a 4-H member, and youth leader serving on the Ivanpah School Board for 19 years and a community leader for the Upper Fall River Jayhawkers 4-H club. She also served on the Greenwood County Extension Board, Farm Bureau, and was president of the Lutheran Church Women. An active partner in the ranching operation, Kathryn and Hap shared many awards including Kansas Bankers Conservation Award, National Wildlife Conservation Award, Lutheran Service Award, and Kansas Master Farmer and Homemaker Award. Kathryn and her family served as hosts to over 80 foreign visitors and exchange students. She was involved in the Ag in the Classroom program for 20 years and hosted many school groups. The past several years she has been coordinating the 'Historic storytelling' covering Greenwood County and items of interest. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one daughter. Aside from her children, she is survived by one sister, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services was held Friday, Oct. 1, at Christ Lutheran Church in Eureka, with Pastor Roger Dennis of Christ Lutheran Church officiating. Cremation has been effected. James K. Cavenee

James Kent Cavenee, age 99, died Sept. 23, 2004, at St. Joseph Village in Manhattan. He was born Oct. 12, 1904, in Lyons, the son of James Doty and Anna Louise Clutter Cavenee. Mr. Cavenee lived in Great Bend until July 2002, when he moved to Tribune, and then to Manhattan about three weeks before his death. Mr. Cavenee was a salesman of boats and motorcycles in Great Bend. He enjoyed boating, his coffee group that met at Burger King in Great Bend and his daily walks. In July 1925, in Hutchinson, he was married
to the former Cora Ellen Snodgrass. Mrs. Cavenee preceded him in death in April 1989. He was also preceded in death by three children: Joan Ryan, Gordon Cavenee and James F. Cavenee. Survivors include one son: William 'Bill' Cavenee of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Kelsey Rose of Longmont, Colo.; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Manhattan with Steve Graber officiating. Ernest George Herman Galliart Dec. 24, 1934, at Dubuque. He died June 9, 1992. A resident of Russell since 1991, coming from Beaver, she was a housewife. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Dorrance. Survivors include two sons, Vernon Dean Galliart of Folsom, Calif., and Kenneth Lee Galliart of Bunker Hill; one brother, Hubert Harry Keil of Milberger; one sister, Josephine Springer of Hoisington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Gene Ernest Galliart; six brothers, Ernest Keil, Waldomar Keil, Clifford Dean Keil, Julius Keil, Levin Melvin Keil and Gerhardt Keil; and two sisters, Florence Keil and Esther Keil. MACKSVILLE - Alvin G. Johnson, 75, died Sept. 30 at Leisure Homestead of St. John. He was born Jan. 10, 1929, at Hopewell, the son of Henry and Bertha Woods Johnson. He attended schools at Clear Creek, Pratt and St. John's Military in Salina. A resident of St. John, he was an electrician working in Kansas and Texas, and was a farmer and pilot. Johnson served with the Air National Guard. Survivors include one son, Henry Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Nancy Hall of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Johnson; two half-brothers, Robert Wood and Otis Johnson; and four half-sisters, Jane Wilson, Blanche Clinton, Lola Hardy and Gladys Stambaugh.
