She was born August 22, 1925 at Glen Elder, KS, the daughter of Clyde M. and Alice (Slaven) Smith. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Wamego, where Dorothy spent her childhood.

Dorothy came to Manhattan in her late teens and worked as a waitress at the local bus station café before taking a job working at Gould’s Café. She later worked at the Chef Café for many years.

In 1949, she married Dale White and had a son, Jim. They were divorced soon after and she met and married Gaylord Freed in July 1952. They had two daughters, Deb and Sandy. That marriage ended in 1973.

Dorothy was a good mom and was proud of her children and grandchildren. Music was always important to her and the radio was always on during the day. As the wife of a career military husband, she spent a lot of time as a single mom and did the best she could under the circumstances. Working part time while raising three kids and caring for her mother until her death in 1991, were not easy tasks, but she never complained.
