Obituary: Clifford D. Walters, 77, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

He was born August 22, 1930 at Manhattan, the son of Theodore “Ted” Walters and Ruth Gough Walters. He attended the local schools and was a 1949 graduate of the Manhattan High School. He had been a lifelong Manhattan resident.

He was united in marriage to Jo Ann Tidwell on March 24, 1950 at Manhattan. She preceded him in death on December 31, 1977. On April 7, 1979, he was married to Betty (Say) Niemeier at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

In the early 1950’s, Mr. Walters worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Manhattan and in 1953 joined the City of Manhattan-Fire Department, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief in 1975. In 1985, he retired as an Officer in the city’s Code Enforcement Office.

He attended the Ashland Community Church and was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M. and the Stagg Hill Golf Club.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Walters is survived by a son, Jeffrey D. Walters, and his wife, Jennifer, Manhattan; a daughter, Gail Dennis, and her husband, Danny, Hutchinson, KS; a stepson, Todd Niemeier, and his wife, Rhonda, Amado, AZ; seven grandchildren, Jake Walters and his wife, Amber, Kelly Walters, and his fiancé, Terin, Jessica Walters, Steve Sawyer, and his wife, Lori, Jason Sawyer, Aaron Sawyer and Asa Niemeier; and two great grandchildren, William Sawyer and Reese Walters.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Walters was preceded in death by a stepson, Ron Niemeier in 1985 and his parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Pastor Paul Barkey officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association and left in care of the funeral home.

The family of Mr. Walters will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Obituary: Cheryl June Ferreira-Troutt, 48, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008 at her home.

She was born September 26, 1959 at Oklahoma City, OK, the daughter of Marion John Hamner and Uladell Brown Hamner. As a young child she moved to Junction City, KS, where she grew up and attended the local schools. She had been a longtime Junction City and Manhattan area resident and worked many years for the J.C. Distributing and Vending Company, Junction City.

Survivors include her husband, J.T. Troutt, Manhattan; a son, Jason Ferreira, Ellsworth, KS and his fiancé, Shelly M. Jennings, Manhattan; two sisters, Marilyn Cox, Junction City and Leora Eaton, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation is planned. No memorial services are scheduled at this time. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan was in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Marvin H. Radenberg, 81, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, April 4, 2008 at his home.

He was born December 27, 1926 at Claflin, KS, the son of Paul Radenberg and Rose (Miller) Radenberg. He grew up in the State Center community, near Claflin, where he attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Claflin High School.

He was a veteran of the World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. After his military service, Mr. Radenberg moved to Manhattan to attended Kansas State University.

He was united in marriage to Edith “Edé” Suther on June 21, 1949 at Frankfort, KS. She survives of the home.

Mr. Radenberg worked at the Davison Carburator and Electric Company and later the Stevenson Sign Service Company, both of Manhattan, for many years. In 1971, he opened the Radio Shack store in Manhattan and managed it until he retired in 1996 to build custom furniture and restore antiques.

He was a member of the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 and the Kansas Quality Woodworkers Association, both of Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Albert Radenberg.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Radenberg is survived by two sons, Paul L. Radenberg, and his wife, Helen Charnock, Marina Del Rey, CA and Bill Radenberg, Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter, Susan Radenberg Hening, and her husband, David, Yukon, OK; a brother, Leo Radenberg, and his wife, Pat, Great Bend, KS; a sister, Vivian Grossardt, Claflin, KS; six grandchildren, Kyle, Cameron and Laina Radenberg and Kylie, Travis and Nicole Hening; and six nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Kevin Larson officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Seven Dolors Catholic Church Building Fund or Manhattan Homecare and Hospice and left in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Vera B. Scott, 92, formerly of Manhattan, KS, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008 in the Midland Hospice House, Topeka.

She was born November 22, 1915 at Belvue, KS, the daughter of John Henry Jenkins and Edna Belle Navarre Jenkins. She grew up in the Belvue area, where she attended the local schools and was a 1933 graduate of the Wamego, KS High School.

She was united in marriage to Bruce P. Scott on September 18, 1937 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1999.

Mrs. Scott, along with her husband, farmed in the Ashland Bottoms area, south of Manhattan, for many years until moving to Manhattan in 1971. She had also worked as a housekeeper in the dormitories at Kansas State University.

She was an active member of the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Martha Circle and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Fortnightly Club.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Nina Scott.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally McCubbin, and her husband, Harold, Littleton, CO; two sons, Phillip Scott, and his wife, Judith, Maple Valley, WA and William Scott, and his wife, Phyllis, Berryton, KS; six grandchildren, Brian Scott, Rebecca Oakes, Susan Miller, Deborah Miller, Eric Scott and John Scott; and seven great grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Raju, Ashlin and Keira Scott, Jack and Violet Arnold, and Abigail Oakes.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Ashland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association and left in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Larsen passed away Monday, February 4, 2008 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan. She was a homemaker and had worked as a secretary at the Trinity Presbyterian Church and retired from the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elton T. “Doc” Larsen on April 12, 2007.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda L. Larsen, and her husband, Tim Whiteside, Flagstaff, AZ; two brothers, Jack N. Finch, Bartlesville, OK and Garry L. Finch, McPherson, KS; and two granddaughters, Ashley Lynn Whiteside and Kelsey Kristin Whiteside.

Obituary: Ruth A. Dempsey, 86, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008 in the Meadowlark Hills/Starkey House, Manhattan.

She was born May 16, 1921 at Scott City, KS, the daughter of Herbert Coffin and Adeline Van Schoyck Coffin. She grew up in Scott City, where she attended the local schools and was a 1940 graduate of the Scott City High School.

After attending Business College in Wichita, Mrs. Dempsey met and later married Albert P. “Pete” Dempsey, Jr. on March 14, 1942 in Scott City. He preceded her in death on December 2, 2007.

Mrs. Dempsey spent her early years of marriage fulfilling the role of an Army wife and mother. While following her husband’s military career, she taught Sunday School and was a leader in Cub scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H and many of the school activities at the various army posts.

After Colonel Dempsey’s retirement from the U.S. Army in 1973, the family moved to a farm near Manhattan. Mrs. Dempsey was a homemaker and started horseback riding lessons.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dempsey was preceded in death by a son, William Joel Dempsey in 1976; her parents; and a sister, Barbara Minnis.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Barbara Diane Taylor, and her husband, John, of Manhattan; a son, Tom Dempsey, Carlisle, PA; and five grandchildren, Dustin Taylor, Matt Taylor, Patrick Dempsey, Siobhan Dempsey and Michael Dempsey.

Cremation is planned. A visitation for family and friends will be from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Private family inurnment services will be held at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Edward T. Keck, 45, Manhattan, KS, passed away Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the K.U. Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on February 3, 1963, in Grand Island, NE, the son of Bill and Shirley (Blair) Keck. He grew up in Grand Island and in 1972 moved with his family to North Platte, Nebraska, where he was a 1981 graduate of St. Patrick’s Catholic High School. In 1987, he received his BS degree in Graphic Art and Design from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Mr. Keck was a 22-year veteran Transportation Officer of the U.S. Army Reserve, serving three tours including Korea, Bosnia and Iraq. He retired at the rank of MAJ in 2005.

Mr. Keck has been a Manhattan resident since 1989. He was Marketing Director of Kansas Farm Bureau for 15 years and for the past two years has worked as a Project Manager for M2 Technologies.

He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 8488 in Manhattan. He was always eager to coach in the city’s youth sports leagues over the years and loved to watch his sons compete in any sport. Ed was a loving husband and father and was extremely proud of his three sons. Ed always put his family first and he was deeply loved by all his family and friends. He will continue to be known by his nieces and nephews as “Uncle Best Guy.”

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill, in 1998.

Ed was united in marriage to Jolene M. Smith on May 23, 1986, in North Platte, Nebraska. In addition to his wife, Mr. Keck is survived by three sons: Shane S. Keck and his fiancé Danna Davidson, Aaron M. Keck, and Patrick D. Keck of Manhattan; his mother, Shirley Keck of North Platte; six brothers: Bill “Butch” Keck of Omaha, Allan Keck, Steve Keck and wife Cindy, Kenny Keck and wife Theresa, Keven Keck and wife Alice, all of North Platte, Dick Keck and wife Kristie of Kearney, Nebraska; three sisters: Bonnie Tilford, Kathy Buck, and Dorothy Savory and her partner Hubert, all of North Platt; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2008 in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Father Don Zimmerman as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Manhattan. The family will receive friends for an hour preceding the Rosary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Keck Boys' College Fund and left in care of the funeral home.
