Max Eugene Grove 1921-2003
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Max Eugene Grove, 81, died April 13 at Richard Roudebush Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born April 20, 1921, at Wakita, Okla., the son of Timothy Vernon and Lucy Mable Pracht Grove. He married Nadene Lois White March 10, 1946, at Indianapolis. He owned and operated Ray-Max Welding in Claflin for 50 years, retiring in 1985. Grove was a member and deacon of Gasburg Baptist Church in Gasburg, Ind. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Timothy P. Grove of Indianapolis; two daughters, Diana F. Ridenour of Mooresville and Kristi A. Holmes of Springhill; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. Jack Elliott and Tony Manning officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Hall, Ind., with military honors. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle and Son Funeral Home in Mooresville, Ind. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Margaret M. Paxton 1917-2003
MCPHERSON - Margaret M. Paxton 86, died April; 11 at The Cedars Health Care Center in McPherson. She was born Feb. 24, 1917, the daughter of Delbert and Ethel Chandler Moore. She married Fay M. Paxton, Jan. 1, 1938, at Guyman, Okla. He died Dec. 26, 1988. A resident of McPherson, coming from Durango, Colo., she was a teacher and homemaker. Mrs. Paxton was a member of First United Methodist Church in Durango, and League of Women Voters. Survivors include two sons, Paul M. Paxton of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Joseph A. Paxton of Pueblo, Colo.; one daughter, Alice P. Young of Great Bend; one brother, Delbert Moore of Archer City, Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, John W. Paxton. Memorial service will be held at a late date at the church in Durango. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home in McPherson.

Teresa Renee Stephans Tatman Ramey 1957-2003
GARFIELD - Teresa Renee Stephans Tatman Ramey, 45, died April 12 near Larned as the result of a car accident. She was born Dec. 23, 1957 at Gardena, Calif., the daughter of Clifford Edward and Hope Calico Stephans. She married Robert Ramey. A resident of Garfield coming from Marshall, Texas, Ellinwood, and Stafford, she was employed at Dillons in Larned. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Amanda N. Tatman of Hudson; her parents of Ellinwood; one brother, Dr. Gregory E. Stephans of Gosse Isle, Mich.; and one half brother, Mark Stephans of Las Vegas, Nev. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood with the Rev. Andy Kelthner officiating. There will be no burial, cremation has taken place. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Toys for Tots in care of the funeral home.

Hattie Pundsack 1916-2003
Hattie Pundsack, 86, of Great Bend, died April 12 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born July 8, 1916 at Pfeifer, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Weigel Linenberger. She married Otto S. Pundsack March 7, 1941 at Kansas City, Mo. He died Oct. 3, 1989. A resident of Great Bend coming from Seward, she was administrative secretary at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, retiring in 1981. Mrs. Pundsack was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and a charter Member of Central Kansas Medical Center Auxiliary all in Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Donald J. Pundsack of Great Bend; two daughter, Diane Mary Downs of Lincoln City, Org., and Joanne Kay Pavia of Portland, Org.; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Father Herbert Linenberger; and three sisters, Helen Hall, Clara Sellers, and Laura Brungardt. Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Cherry Village Living Memorial in care of the funeral home.

Carroll Duane Boyter 1922-2003
Carroll Duane Boyter, 80, of Great Bend, died April 11 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 24, 1922 at Enid, Okla., the son of James Edward and Lucille Walls Boyter. Boyter was a resident of Great Bend coming from Woodward, Okla. Boyter was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons, Larry D. Boyter of Virginia Beach, Va., and Christopher R. Boyter of Oahu, Hawaii; one daughter, Dana Lancaster of Great Bend; one sister, Delma Archie of Shawnee, Okla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Boyter, and a sister, Christal Boyter. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery in Woodward, Okla., with John Knox officiating. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home.

Wendell R. Bott 1924-2003
SPRINGFIELD, ORE. - Wendell R. Bott, 78, died April 10. He was born Nov. 9, 1924 at Hoisington, the son of Albert and Lucy Humphrey Bott. He was a 1947 graduate of Hoisington High School. He married Elizabeth 'Betty' Jane McCurry Oct. 1, 1948 at Tuccumcari, N.M. She died April 22, 1988. A resident of Springfield, Ore., coming from Eugene and Hoisington, he was a carpenter. He was a decorated Army Air Corps veteran having served as a sergeant in North Africa and the Middle East during World War II. Bott was a Methodist and a member of the American Legion. Survivors include one son, Brent Reed Bott of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Cindi Jane Hengstler of Eugene; and one sister, Joyce Donahue of Eugene; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Bott. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lane Memorial Garden Funeral Home in Eugene. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Gardens, Eugene. Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers, to Sacred Heart Foundation Home Health Division, Box 10905, Eugene, Ore., 97440.

Marian Lucille Schultz 1933-2003
RUSSELL - Marian Lucille Schultz, 69, died April 10 at Russell Regional Hospital. She was born Oct. 25, 1933 in Russell, the daughter of Henry and Katherine Bender Berschauer. She married Willis L. Schultz on Oct. 14, 1951 in Russell. Employed at Gibson's, Gambles and later, for 17 years, at Don Dawson Pharmacy in Russell, she was a lifelong Russell resident. Schultz was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Scott Schultz and Shane Schultz, both of Russell; three daughters, Kelly Jacobs of Hoisington, and Kori Sellens and Kim Kilian, both of Russell; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Cross of Wichita and Fern Tuzicka of Hoisington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Art Berschauer; and a sister, Doris Steinert. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran cemetery in Russell. Friends may visit from 3-8 p.m. today and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell, with family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church in care of the mortuary. Captain Michael Travis Cates 1972 - 2003
FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Captain Michael Travis Cates, 31, died April 9 at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. He was born March 27, 1972, at Killeen, Texas, the son of Raymond Allen and Rebecca Lynn Miller Cates. He was a lifetime resident of Texas. He graduated from Trinity High School, Euless, Texas, in 1990 and Terrant County Junior College with an associate degree. He also attended Columbia University in Louisiana receiving his bachelor's degree in business. He attended flight school in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a flight instructor and aerobatic pilot at the NW Regional and Hicks Airports in Texas. He was employed by Skyway Airlines based out of Milwaukee, Wis., where he was captain of a Donier 328 jet. Travis married Kim Schmidt. He was a member of Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller, Texas. Travis' hobbies included professional karoke singing, scuba diving, boating and water skiing, horseback riding, baseball and especially his many friends. Travis is survived by his parents, Raymond and Rebecca Cates of Haslet, Texas; one son, Sean Michael Cates and one daughter, Aubrey Ann Cates, both of Fort Worth; his fiancee, Rebecca Zorns of Fort Worth; a brother, Jason Ray and his wife, Rebekah Lynn Cates of Wichita; a nephew, Brodie Cates and a niece, Jayden Cates, both of Wichita; his grandmothers, June Miller and Thelma Cates, both of Claflin; his great-great-grandpa Robert L. Miller of El Dorado; 35 uncles and aunts and 63 cousins. Travis was preceded in death by his grandfathers Robert J. Miller and Vivan E. Cates. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 9 tonight and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church in Claflin. Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be in Claflin cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Travis Cates Children's Education Fund in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O. Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Margaret A. Welch 1904-2003
HUTCHINSON - Margaret A. Welch, 99, died April 9 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson. She was born Feb. 24, 1904, at Fontana, the daughter of Clinton and Grace Flook Brewington. She married George B. Welch Nov. 20, 1921, at Liberal. He died Feb. 27, 1970. A longtime Hutchinson resident, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Welch was a member of Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Marjorie Beery of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jack Welch and James Welch; two grandsons, William Welch and Michael Welch; one granddaughter, Margaret Jean Welch; one great-grandson, Michael Welch; and one great-great-granddaughter, Casey McConnell. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairlawn Burial Park Mausoleum in Hutchinson with the Rev. Alan D. Stambaugh officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliotts Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home.

Michael Travis Cates 1972-2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - Michael Travis Cates, 31, died April 9 at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin. Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Louise Kimpler 1909-2003
Helen Louise Kimpler, 94, of Great Bend, who died April 5, was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Williams; three brothers, James Ehly, Richard Ehly and August Ehly; and two sisters, Lois Ehly Linsner and Lucille Bergstrom. The Tribune regrets the omission.

Randall K.'Randy' Evans 1951-2003
HOISINGTON - A service of remembrance for Randall K. 'Randy' Evans, 51, who died April 6 at Rose Hill, will be at 5:30 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Hoisington, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Evans was former superintendent of USD 431 in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to Hoisington Education Foundation or Rose Hill Education Foundation, both in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.

William D. Adams 1944-2003
WICHITA - William D. Adams, 58, died April 7 at his residence in Wichita. He was born Aug. 15, 1944, in Great Bend, the son of Eugene W. and Ruth Hurt Adams. A resident of Wichita, coming from Lyons and Great Bend, he was a former employee of the Coleman Company in Wichita. Survivors include one son, Matthew Adams of Wichita; his mother, Ruth Laudick of Hoisington; two brothers, Robert E. Adams and Dale Adams, both of Wichita; four sisters, Connie Weber of Wichita, Julie Tubbs of Levant, Marla Breitenbach of Shawnee and Denise Elliott of Olathe; and one grandchild. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Girls and Boys Town, P.O. Box 7000, Boys Town, NE 68010.

Jerome T. 'Jack' Axman 1923-2003
OLMITZ - Jerome T. 'Jack' Axman, 79, died April 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born July 1, 1923, at Barton County, the son of Joseph F. and Mary Stoss Axman. He was a 1942 graduate of Olmitz High School. He married Betty Mae Smolik May 18, 1953. A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a farmer and stockman. Axman was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council 2100 and a former Otis-Bison USD 403 school board member. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Mike Axman and Joe F. Axman, both of Olmitz, and Paul Axman of Hoisington; three daughters, Lillian Palsmeier of Conway Springs, Barb Boldt of Oakley and Rita Hickel of Hoisington; one brother, Joseph B. Axman of Great Bend; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Axman; two brothers, Ben Axman and Hank Axman; and one grandson, Joseph Jerome Axman. Wake service will be at 7:30 tonight, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann cemetery in Olmitz. Friends may call from 9 this morning until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or Knights of Columbus Council 2100, both in care of the funeral home.

George Y. Gross 1900-2003
NESS CITY - George Y. Gross, 103, died April 8 at Ness County Long Term Care Center in Ness City. He was born April 7, 1900, at Merkel, Russia, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Butherus Gross. He married Alma Eichman Sept. 8, 1922, at La Crosse. A resident of Ness City since 1951, coming from southwest of Bazine, he was a farmer and carpenter. Gross was a member of United Methodist Church and Odd Fellows Lodge, both of Ness City. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jerry Gross of Bazine; two daughters, Opal Steider of Sun City West, Ariz., and Celesta Reed of Rochelle, Ill.; one sister, Martha Milberger of Ness City; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Berdina Eibert; four brothers, Jake Gross, Henry Gross, Adam Gross and Raymond Gross; seven sisters, Elizabeth Erb, Amelia Ritter, Mary Weber, Pauline Bacon, Hanna Cox, Edna Gross and Eva Gross. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Ness City cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City.
