Hazel L. Jilg 1921-2003
EL DORADO - Hazel L. Jilg, 81, died Aug. 14 at her home. She was born Sept. 20, 1921, at Great Bend, the daughter of Howard and Pearl Davis Warner. She married
Joseph Edward Jilg May 18, 1946, in Great Bend. He died Jan. 15, 2001. A resident of El Dorado since 1946, coming from the Great Bend and Hoisington area, she was a registrar for Four Winds Girl Scout Council for 18 years and was named registrar emeritus upon retiring in 1981. Mrs. Jilg was a member of First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado, Sunday school teacher, Stonecroft Ministries Bible Studies, the church's Women's Association, TUGGS group, Book Lovers Club, Quest Club, Senior Ambassadors, Butler County Historical Society, M&M Sewing Club, various bridge groups and Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains Council. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Jilg of Wichita and Curtis Jilg of El Dorado; one sister, Verla Jilg of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado.
Dennis Wayne Galliart Sr. 1945-2003
WICHITA - Dennis Wayne Galliart Sr., 58, of Wichita, died Aug. 13 at 3 a.m. at Wesley Medical Center of ongoing medical problems. Dennis was born March 16, 1945, in Great Bend, the son of Eddie and Oma Smith Galliart. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Galliart; two step-daughters, Cheryl Hardgraves and Martha Mwangi, both of Wichita; one brother, Edward B. Galliart Jr. of Newton; and one sister, Glenna Mae Ritchie of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Dennis was an oilfield worker in the Great Bend area for several years. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1962. He was baptized by Emmanuel Baptist Church in Great Bend where he was a member in 1961. Galliart moved from Great Bend to Wichita in 1991. He attended barber school while working as a building mechanical engineer. He joined the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, troop 132, where he served as president until the ongoing medical conditions no longer allowed him to. May our Lord wrap his loving arms around our brother and keep him in peace. A memorial service will be at 7 tonight at Eagles Lodge, 3101 N. Broadway, in Wichita. A second memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at East Side Southern Baptist Church, 440 Grapevine, Great Bend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or National Kidney Foundation. Culbertson-Smith Mortuary in Wichita is in charge of arrangements.
Dwight O. McAllister 1946-2003
RADIUM - Dwight O. McAllister, 56, died Aug. 13 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 29, 1946, at Stafford, the son of Orville and Grayce Mawhirter McAllister. He graduated from Radium High School. He married
Karen Kay Martin July 14, 1984, at Belpre. A lifetime resident of Stafford County, he was branch manager at Seward for the Great Bend Co-op. McAllister was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Heather of the home; two brothers, Kent McAllister of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Lynn McAllister of Lexington, Neb.; and one sister, Judy Keeler of Wichita. Vigil service will be at 6 tonight at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church in Larned with the Revs. Dennis Reed and Rene Guesnier officiating. WICHITA - Wanda S. Schlegel, 53, died Aug. 11. Formerly of Great Bend, she was a former Checkers Grocery Store deli supervisor. Survivors include her husband, Curtis Schlegel of the home; one son, William B. Schlegel of Ellington, Mo.; four daughters, Sandra Rowe of Kansas City, Mo., Roberta Ellington of Otis, Katina Baker of Wichita and Saundra Schlegel of Great Bend; two brothers, Bob De Shazer of Belle Plaine and Butch De Shazer of Wichita; one sister, Helen McElrath of Wichita; and 18 grandchildren. Berneice Werth 1931-2003
VICTORIA - Berneice Werth, 72, died Aug. 11 at Hays Medical Center. She was born March 20, 1931, at Schoenchen, the daughter of Joe and Julia Gottschalk Kronewitter. She married
Linus Werth May 22, 1951, at Schoenchen. She was a business partner for Five Star Amoco and was a homemaker. Mrs. Werth was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Ladies Guild of St. Nicholas and St. Nicholas Prayer Group. Survivors include her husband of the home; five sons, Tim Werth, Kent Werth and Greg Werth, all of Hays, Glen Werth of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Stan Werth of Elk City, Okla.; four daughters, Sharon Werth of Hartsdale, N.Y., Cathy Leiker of Houston, Texas, Debra Dachsteiner of St. Charles, Ill., and Lesa Lowry of Frisco, Texas; one brother, Jim Kronewitter of Conway Springs; four sisters, Jane Kisner of Pfeifer, Ruth Zimmerman and Carol Legleiger, both of Hays, and Betty Rajewski of Great Bend; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dale Werth; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Werth. Mathilda Evelyn Weber Schartz 1907-2003
Mathilda Evelyn Weber Schartz, 96, died Aug. 8 at Olathe Medical Center. She was born Aug. 4, 1907, at Dubuque, the daughter of Nicholas J. and Marie Dolechek Weber. She married
Frank N. Schartz Jan. 21, 1946, at Dubuque. He died Oct. 22, 1985. A longtime Great Bend resident, she was a wife and mother. Mrs. Schartz was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and St. Rose Legion of Mary, all of Great Bend. Survivors include two daughters, Frances Geralyn Kelly and Mary Ann Johnston, both of Overland Park; two sisters, Frances Bieberle of Hoisington and Anna Lee Habiger of Bushton; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Nicholas Weber; and one sister, Mary Schartz. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Dominican Chapel of the Plains in Great Bend, with the Rev. William A. Mills 1925-2003
William A. Mills was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Bristow, Okla., to Granville Y. and Iva E. Crawford Mills, and passed from this life on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at his home at Lake Lawtonka, north of Lawton, Okla., at the age of 78 years, six months and 16 days, following a lengthy illness. Bill grew up north of Cyril, Okla., and graduated from Cyril High School. Following graduation he entered the U.S. Army, and served as a medic during World War II. Following his discharge, he went to Cameron College in Lawton. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 37 years, working up from a tool pusher to supervisor of exploration and production when he retired. He was a member of the Baptist Church, and was a 32nd degree Mason. An avid fisherman, he loved going fishing with his dad and brother-in-law, Ben Stockton, both now deceased. He moved to Lake Lawtonka from Great Bend and enjoyed fishing with his friends. He was especially proud of his boat house at the lake. Bill never met a stranger, and was a most generous, kind and loving man. He was a good Dad. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Mills; one stepdaughter, Pat Daniels and one grandchild. Survivors include his wife, Clarice, of the Lake Lawtonka home; one daughter, Wilda Young of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one son, Russell K. Mills and his wife Linette of Oklahoma City; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Mills of Pauls Valley; stepchildren, Fred Daniels of Fairfield, Calif., Mike and Peggy Thompson of Wichita, and Ron and Debbie Knipp of Pampa, Texas; five grandchildren; five (and one half) great-grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; one sister, Imogene Stockton of Anadarko; two nephews; one niece; special friends, Bill and June Ferguson of Cache, Okla., and Diane Roat of Elgin; and numerous other friends and relatives. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, with the pastor, Dr. Randy Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery at Fort Cobb under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home of Anadarko. Anna M. Price, 92, of Great Bend, died Aug. 9 at Jefferson City, Mo. She was born June 1, 1911, at Raymond, the daughter of Chan and Anna Mae Miller Smith. She married
Grover H. Price Dec. 30, 1930, at Sterling. He died Aug. 17, 1984. A resident of Great Bend for 56 years, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Price was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett C. 'Bud' Smith and Ernest L. 'Smitty' Smith. Daniel Payan Jr., 8, died Aug. 8 at Jetmore. He was born Aug. 10 at Abilene, Texas, the son of Daniel Sr. and Anabel Santibanes Payan. He was a student at Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend. He was a resident of Great Bend for three years, coming from Ensign. Payan was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; three brothers, Jimmy Lopes of Beaumont, Texas, Jessie Lopes and Paul Payan, both of Abilene, Texas; four sisters, Samantha Payan of the home, Daniela Payan of Haskell, Texas, Gabriela Torres of Mexia, Texas, and Diana Payan of Abilene, Texas; grandparents, Elvira Hernandez of Racine, Wis., Mariadel Carmen Garcia of Mexico and Rene Santibanez of Mexico. MCPHERSON - Charlene M. Marker Ince, 58, died Aug. 9 at Memorial Hospital in McPherson. She was born April 2, 1945, at Topeka, the daughter of Raymond and Colleen Mae Finan Sievers. She married
Larry E. Marker in August 1963. They were divorced. A resident of McPherson since 2001, coming from Great Bend, she was a former employee of American State Bank and Damac Drilling Company, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Kim Unruh of McPherson; one brother, Gary Sievers of Pawnee Rock; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond 'Buddy' Sievers. Mason James Howard 1981-2003
Mason James Howard, 22, of Great Bend, died Aug. 10 at Great Bend. He was born Feb. 21, 1981, at Great Bend, the son of Robert Dale and Jane Ellen Johnson Howard. He was a 1999 graduate of Great Bend High School, attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University and was a member of the baseball team, and was a 2003 graduate of Kansas State University of Manhattan. Howard was vice-president of Kay's Club, A Capella Choir, Madrigal Pop Singers and the 1998 State Champion Baseball Team, all of Great Bend. Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; one brother, Bart Howard of Great Bend; grandparents, Harold and Elaine Johnson of Great Bend, and Helen Sharp of Las Vegas, Nev. Emma Helen Doran 1917-2003
MACKSVILLE - Emma Helen Doran, 86, died Aug. 9 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 31, 1917, at Larned, the daughter of George and Anna Margaret Kaufman Frick. She was a graduate of Zook High School and a 1939 graduate of Kansas State University. She married
Vernon L. Doran May 17, 1941, at Manhattan. He died Sept. 8, 1975. She was a teacher in Toronto, Manhattan and Macksville school districts. Mrs. Doran was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star since 1948, and a member of American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include one son, James Doran of St. John; two daughters, Jeanne Scott of Lawrence and Janet Crane of Great Bend; one sister, Evelyn Van Vleet of Garden City; and nine grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. this morning at the church in Macksville. Burial will be at Farmington cemetery in Macksville. The casket will be closed. Max E. Bennett 1934-2003
WICHITA - Max E. Bennett, 68, former president and CEO of Great Bend Manufacturing Inc., and former vice-president and general manager of Hesston Corporation, passed away at his home from cancer Aug. 9. Max was born on Aug. 22, 1934, at Pleasant Hope, Mo., to David and Ilene Bennett. He graduated from Republic High School in 1951. He worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, Ill., until 1964. During this time he graduated from their four-year Tool and Die Apprenticeship program and worked his way through the company to become the industrial engineering supervisor. On Sept. 5, 1954, he married
Rosalene 'Rosie' Wade in Republic, Mo., and they had four children. In 1964, the family moved to Lewis where Max became manufacturing manager for Cross Manufacturing Company. In 1966, he left to become the senior industrial engineer for Hesston Corporation. He spent 20 years with Hesston Corporation, serving as plant manager, Logan Division in Logan, Utah.; general manager, Woods Division in Oregon, Ill., vice-president industrial products group, vice-president and general manager, Hesston Division; and vice-president of business development. In 1977, he graduated from Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. In 1986, Max left Hesston Corporation to work as a consultant specializing in mergers and acquisitions. In 1988, he was retained by Great Bend Manufacturing Company in Great Bend, where he became president and CEO and was the major shareholder. Max was on the executive committee and served on the board of directors of the Equipment Manufacturing Institute. Since his retirement in 1997, Max traveled extensively, worked as a management consultant and served on the board of directors of Foley Equipment Company. Max was an avid golfer and K-State supporter. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 208 of Wilmington, Ill., and a member of Chapel Hill Fellowship United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosie; sons, David Bennett and his wife Karen, and their children, Kelly and Alyssa Duggan, all of Chanhassen, Minn.; Dan Bennett and his wife Jenny, and their children Jamen Dyer, Max and John Bennett, all of Ottawa; daughters Neisha Dahlstrom and her husband Hugo and their children Chris, Tara, Kelly and Britt Dahlstrom, all of McPherson; and Tracy Berry and her husband Ed and their children Yana and Dimitry Berry, all of Dallas, Texas; and two brothers, Ernie Bennett of Grove, Okla., and Gene Bennett of Republic. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Fellowship United Methodist Church, 11660 East 13th St. North in Wichita. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Watson Funeral Home in Wichita. A memorial for Max has been established at the church for the installation of stained glass windows in the sanctuary, in care of the funeral home.
