Thomas Lee Gregg 1949 - 2003 SUSANK - Thomas Lee Gregg, 54, died Sept. 24 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dallas. He was born Feb. 7, 1949, in Great Bend, the son of Floyd F. and Soloma R. Schwartz Gregg. He married
Mary Karen Worthern April 24, 1976, at Otis. A Great Bend resident for most of his life, he recently moved to Susank. He was a shipping and receiving manager for KMart. He was a Navy Seal during the Viet Nam war and was disabled veteran. Gregg was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Thomas Alan Gregg of the home; two daughters, Dawn Christina Fredrick of Hutchinson and Tina Marie Cagle of Garland, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Gregg. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Dennis Edward Augustine 1933 - 2003 CAWKER CITY - Dennis Edward Augustine, 70, died Sept. 25 at his home. He was born Jan. 17, 1933, in Ellis County, to Ambrose and Josephine Honas Augustine. He was a graduate of St. Mary College, Dodge City, with a bachelor's degree in criminal psychology. He was an Osborne County sheriff deputy after moving to Cawker City in 1997. Survivors include his wife, Frieda Kaufman Augustine of the home; four sons, Dennis Augustine II and Doran Augustine, both of Cawker City, and Dion Augustine and David Augustine, both of Downs; one stepson, James Blazer III, Beloit; one daughter, Denise Augstine, Winfield; two stepdaughters, Tammy Hoffman of Byers and Jacci Standlee of Ellinwood; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellis; burial in St. Mary Catholic cemetery, Ellis. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wasinger Funeral Chapel, Ellis. Marcella Elizabeth Koett 1921-2003
LARNED - Marcella Elizabeth Koett, 82, died Sept. 24 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born April 26, 1921, at Kinsley, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hahn Schmitt. She married
Bernard Koett March 5, 1946, at Kinsley. He died May 8, 1988. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Koett was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, and past member of St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, all of Larned. Survivors include two sons, John Koett of Belpre and Terry Koett of Larned; one sister, Frances Koett of Great Bend; four grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Schmitt, Austin Schmitt and Robert Schmitt; and one sister, Florence Solomon. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Henry C. Schneider 1911-2003
DORRANCE - Henry C. Schneider, 91, died Sept. 10 at Ellsworth. He was born Oct. 12, 1911, at Dorrance, the son of Augustine Louis and Mary Agnes Soukup Schneider. He attended South Dorrance County School and Dorrance Rural High School. He married
Irene Carolyn Ney Sept. 17, 1935. A lifetime resident of the Dorrance area, he was a farmer and a stockman. Schneider was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Dorrance. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Dr. Norman Schneider of Ceresco, Neb.; one daughter, Sylvia Lilak of Wilson; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant children, John Schneider and Mary Ann Schneider; one brother, Richard Schneider; two sisters, Helen Steinle and Alice Weber; and one grandson, Rod Lilak. A private family graveside service was held Sept. 13 at St. Wenceslaus cemetery in Wilson, with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Irene J. Krestin, 97, of Great Bend, died Sept. 24 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 18, 1906, at Great Bend, the daughter of Elihu and Martha Kane Price. She married
Lloyd Harold Walters in 1924 at Great Bend. He died in 1959. She married
Edward Krestin April 15, 1988, at Great Bend. He died March 16, 2002. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 40 years. Mrs. Krestin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion 180 Auxiliary and Telephone Pioneers, all of Great Bend. Survivors include three grandsons, Lance Walters of Great Bend, Randy Walters of Harrisonville, Mo., and Greg Walters of Siloam Springs, Ark.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd 'Dutch' Walters; one brother, LeRoy Price; and one sister Beaulh Seaman. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Mace Leroy Scott 1916-2003
CHASE - Mace Leroy Scott, 87, died Sept. 24 at Lyons District Hospital in Lyons. He was born Aug. 18, 1916, at Chase, the son of Frank Mace and Joanna Mary Loesch Scott. He was a 1932 graduate of Chase High School. He married
Thelia Belle Malone Feb. 9, 1966, in Chase. She died Oct. 19, 1991. A lifetime resident of Chase, he was a retired farmer. Scott was a member of Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Department, both of Chase, and Ducks Unlimited. Survivors include two sons, George M. Malone of Devine, Texas, and Steve E. Malone of Wichita; one daughter, Thelia Jo Ford of Great Bend; two sisters, Mabel Stickney of Ellinwood and Esther Roberts of La Crosse; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Pat L. Loyl Frank Achterberg 1918-2003
LINCOLN - Loyl Frank Achterberg, 85, died Sept. 23. He was born March 5, 1918, the son of Herman and Christine Holl Achterberg. A resident of Lincoln, he was a farmer, builder and blacksmith. Achterberg was a lifelong member of St. Johns Lutheran Church of Lincoln. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in Hawaii and Okinawa. Survivors include his wife, Melva, of the home; two sons, Marvin Achterberg of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Duane Achterberg of Hays; one daughter, Donna Achterberg of Salina; one sister, Della Lohmann of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Achterberg and Wilbur Achterberg; and one sister, Leona Aufdemberge. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Albert Richard Carter 1933-2003
STERLING - Albert Richard Carter, 70, died Sept. 15 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born Aug. 31, 1933, at Lewiston, Maine, the son of Fred and Marguerite Dumont Carter. He graduated from Portland High School. He married
Roberta Hartley Feb. 14, 1966, at Denver, Colo. He was owner and truck driver for Caratco. Carter was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Albert Carter Jr. and Darrell Paul Carter, both of Denver; five daughters, Jo Ellen and Sally Jo, both of Denver, Kellie of Warsaw, Mo., Angel of Lyons, and Melissa of Hutchinson; two brothers, Leo Carter of Lewiston, Maine, and Roger Carter of Key Largo, Fla.; three sisters, Jannett and Claudette, both of Portland, Maine, and Carmen of Sacramento, Calif; and 17 grandchildren. His body was donated to University of Kansas Medical Center. A private family service will be held at a later date. Frederic R. Humburg 1944-2003
WILBURTON, Okla. - Frederic R. Humburg, 59, died Sept. 18 at Tulsa, Okla. He was born June 21, 1944, in Hays, the son of Russell and Clara Humburg. He lived in Wilburton with his wife, Tommie, since 1975. He was past president of Wilburton Lions Club, a past member of Kiwanis and Jaycees, served as a deacon of Free Will Baptist Church of Wilburton and served on the Panola School Board in Oklahoma. He coached Little League baseball for several years, enjoyed golfing and recently participated in Relay for Life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Vietnam War and was retired from the Army Reserve. Survivors include his wife, Tommie, of the home; one son, Paul Humburg and his wife Tammy, of Inola, Okla.; one daughter, Michelle Turner and husband James of Catoosa, Okla.; one brother, Thomas Humburg and his wife Carolyn of Great Bend; one sister, Dolores Romeiser and her husband Kenneth of Bison; two grandchildren, Russell and Rachel Humburg, both of Inola; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service was held Sept. 22 at Free Will Baptist Church in Wilburton with the Rev. Pete Butler officiating. Pallbearers included Bob Owens, Steve Bryant, Kevin Davis, Chris Alexander, Jim Broyles and Tony Nixon. Honorary pallbearers included Hank Allen, Glen Kendrick, Milton Ford, Eldon Gwin and Dwayne White. Burial was at Memorial Gardens cemetery in Wilburton. Jones-Harkins Funeral Home of Wilburton was in charge of arrangements.
Lorene Hill 1914-2003
HOISINGTON - Lorene Hill, 88, died Sept. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 10, 1914, at Earlsboro, Okla., the daughter of Harry and May Stark Alfrey. She married
C. Willard Hill Dec. 14, 1933, at Wewoka, Okla. He died May 21, 1984. A resident of Hoisington for 60 years, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hill was a member of First Christian Church and Cheyenne Extension Homemakers Unit, both of Hoisington. Survivors include one daughter, Reta Brack of Great Bend; one sister, Ann Olsen of Yukon, Okla.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Paula Bell and Bill Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery. Frances McDonald AMARILLO, Texas - Frances McDonald of Amarillo died Sept. 19 in Alva, Okla. Memorial services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Frances loved working as a counselor of substance abuse at Bill Clements Prison Unit. LAWRENCE - Laura E. Sires Price, 81, died Sept. 23 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. She was born Sept. 24, 1921, at Charleston, S.C., the daughter of William and Lillian Sires. She married
Steve T. Price Oct. 18, 1941, at Charleston. A resident of Lawrence, coming from Bella Vista, Ark., and Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Price was a member of United Methodist Church and was a former Girl Scout leader. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Stephen Price of Kansas City; one daughter, Susan Johnston of Topeka; two sisters, Ruby Newman and Maude Parks, both of Charleston; and one grandson. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Daniel Rawlins Trickey 1952-2003
Daniel Rawlins Trickey died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 22, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. born April 14, 1952, in Fort Riley, Kansas, he was the son of Ralph Elwood Trickey and Marion Louise Lesher. He graduated from Denver's West High School in 1970. On Jan. 24, 1974, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and began a lifelong walk in the Glory of God. He began working in the printing industry at age 13 and after graduation, he continued in that occupation. On May 7, 1976, he married
Christine Kay Hancock in Denver. To this union were born two children, Elizabeth Ann and Paul Daniel. Daniel's career took him to Hays in 1978 where he began working for Printcraft Printers. He and Christine also established a wedding and portrait photography business in Hays. In 1989, the Lord led Daniel and Christine to Great Bend where he continued his occupation in the printing industry. In 1991, he transitioned into ministries of benevolence which grew into the Lasting Life Ministries and the Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen in 1996. In 1991, he also became a minister in the Crossroads Foursquare Community Church in Hoisington. Two years later he was appointed Senior Pastor of this congregation where he served until his death. Daniel believed in reaching out to everyone to bring the message of the Lord's goodness and glory. This belief was put into action in his daily management and hands-on work at the Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen. At the time of his death he also served as manager of Lasting Life Ministries. In addition, he was treasurer for the Hoisington Ministerial Alliance and was an active member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, desktop publishing, computer graphics and was a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos. Daniel's love for his family was only overshadowed by his love for Christ. He was a dedicated husband and father who served as a partner to Christine in all aspects of their home life and parenting. He knew he was blessed by his family and did not hide his joy in them. Daniel also developed a special relationship with Christine's parents and sisters and they thought of him as a son and a brother. Daniel was a servant and faithful friend to all and he touched hundreds of lives in his short 51 years. All were better people for having known him and by following his example. But foremost, he was a slave to the ambition of the Lord Jesus Christ. Daniel is survived by his wife Christine, Great Bend; daughter Elizabeth and husband Mike Schneiweis and their children, Curtis Michael and Cierra Dawn, Great Bend; a son Paul, of the home; his father Ralph, Denver; three sisters-in-law and their husbands; a niece and two nephews; many cousins and a host of loving friends. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2001, a brother Marcus Ralph in 1994, and an infant brother Glenn Everett. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First Assembly of God Church, 601 Patton Road, Great Bend. Officiating will be Pastor Loren Houltberg, Pastor Mike Strosnider, and Pastor Mike Joiner. A graveside ceremony and interment will follow at 4 p.m. at Pleasant View cemetery, rural Jewell County. Charter Funeral Home, Great Bend, and Melby Mortuary, Mankato, are in charge of arrangements.
