Alberta Johanning 1916-2003
ELLINWOOD - Alberta Johanning, 87, died Oct. 12 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born Aug. 2, 1916, at Claflin, the daughter of John and Ida Frenzl Huschka. She married Adolph Johanning May 23, 1944, at Ellinwood. He died Sept. 22, 1995. A lifetime resident of Barton County, coming from Claflin, she was a farm wife and a nurse's aide at Ellinwood District Hospital. Mrs. Johanning was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Ellinwood. Survivors include one brother, Bill Huschka of Ellinwood. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ray Huschka, Fred Huschka, Norman Huschka and Bernard Huschka. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. today followed by vigil service at 7 p.m. today, both at Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Church cemetery north of Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Verle L. Cooley 1925-2003
BURDETT - Verle L. Cooley, 78, died Oct. 11 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born April 19, 1925, at Bazine, the son of Hubert L. and Flora Emma Schaben Cooley. He married Dora May Northern June 7, 1947, at Larned. A longtime resident of Burdett, he was elevator foreman for Burdett Cooperative for 34 years until his retirement in 1987. Cooley was a member of the Christian faith, a life member of American Legion of Burdett and Veteran of Foreign Wars of Hanston. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the 10th Armored division and serving in World War II in Central Europe, Rhineland and European Middle East Campaign. Survivors include one son, Dean Cooley of Wichita; three daughters, Verlene George of Scott City, Rosa Boese of Great Bend and Regina Akers of Burdett; one brother, Daryl Cooley of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Fern Higgins of Macksville and Dorothy Wallace of Sharon Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Burdett with the Revs. Tony Horsley and Rob Schmutz officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Burial will be at Browns Grove cemetery in Burdett. Memorials are suggested to Burdett Emergency Medical Service, in care of the funeral home.

Nickolas J. Weiser 1926-2003
Nickolas J. Weiser, 77, of Great Bend, died Oct. 13 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born March 1, 1926, at Odin, the son of Rudolph and Mary Louise Grellinger Weiser. He married Mary Lou Koelsch Nov. 7, 1949, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was an insurance adjuster for 19 years for Crawford & Company and manager of American Legion for 11 years. Weiser was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 180 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 3111, all of Great Bend. He was a radio operator in the U.S. Air Corps, serving during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Tim Weiser of Manhattan; two daughters, Joan Smith of Osborne and Jan Farrar of Hugoton; four brothers, Larry Weiser of Great Bend, Rudy Weiser of Spearfish, S.D., Al Weiser of Hayward, Wis., and Tony Weiser of Kenosha, Wis.; three sisters, Mary Ann Wassinger and Trudie Strudy, both of Sun City, Ariz., and Katie Reif of Wichita; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard Weiser, Clem Weiser and Herb Weiser. Vigil will be at 7 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Ted Stoecklein and Warren Stecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Glenn W. Eilts 1927-2003
ALBERT - Glenn W. Eilts, 76, died Oct. 8 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. He was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Rush County, the son of Bill and Tina Josifiak Eilts. He married Elsie A. Sell Oct. 29, 1951, in Rush Center. A lifetime area resident, he worked for Centel, retiring in 1990. Eilts was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Galen Glenn Eilts of Jefferson City, Tenn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Ann and Terry Hoffman of Albert, Pamela and Ed Brumfield of Plano, Texas, and Laurie and Mike Gripe of Pratt; three sisters, Ruby Trout of Rush Center, Ella Boese of Rozel and Elaine Horacek of Helena, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Martin Eilts; and one sister, Beulah Ellis. Funeral was held Oct. 10 at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. The body was cremated following the service. Memorials are suggested to Albert Fire Department, in care of the funeral home.

Pauline Randolph Duvall 1914-2003
OTTAWA - Pauline Randolph Duvall, 89, died Oct. 7 at her home in Ottawa. She was born Oct. 4, 1914, in Casey, Ill., the daughter of Oren and Golda Robinson Randolph. She was a graduate of Ranger High School in Ranger, Texas. She married Amous Udel Duvall May 21, 1933, in Eastland, Texas. He died Dec. 8, 1992. A resident of Ottawa, formerly of Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Duvall was a member of North Baptist Church in Ottawa and Eastern Star. Survivors include one son, Oren R. Duvall of Berryton; one daughter, Martha Sue White of Vasser; one brother, Leon Randolph of Liberty, Mo.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Randolph and Floyd Randolph; and one sister, Hazel Richards. Memorial service was Oct. 11 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa with the Rev. Matthew Benorden officiating. A private family inurnment was at Highland cemetery in Ottawa. Memorials are suggested to Midland Hospice in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.

Geraldine 'Jerri' L. Clark 1921-2003
ST. JOHN - Geraldine 'Jerri' L. Clark, 82, died Oct. 10 at Leisure Homestead of St. John. She was born July 27, 1921, at Galva, the daughter of Charles Ray and Bertha Schroff Hunt. She married James Kenneth Clark Aug. 17, 1940, at Lyons. He died Aug. 29, 1986. A resident of St. John for 17 years, coming from north of Hudson, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Clark was a member of First United Methodist Church of St. John and Pleasant Home Extension Homemakers Unit and was a volunteer for the church thrift shop. Survivors include one son, Kenneth L. Clark of St. John; one daughter, Vicki Stevenson of Ulysses; two sisters, Lois Nutter of McPherson and Patricia Siebler of Emmett, Idaho; five grandchildren; one step grandson; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Ray Hunt Jr. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Robbie Fall officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Minnis Chapel of St. John. Memorials are suggested to Methodist Church New Building Fund or South Wind Hospice, both in care of the funeral chapel.

Maria G. Trevino 1919-2003
TOPPENISH, Wash. - Maria G. Trevino was born April 9, 1919, in Great Bend, to Juan and Rumalda. She died peacefully in her home on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Oct. 7. Her five children were with her at the time of her passing. Beginning in September 2003, she gathered her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in a spiritual vigil and blessed each with her love before passing to the Lord's Kingdom. Maria displayed visible evidence of Galatians 5:22 through the spirit of God's love. In 1946, she made her home in Toppenish. She is survived by her husband, Frank B. Trevino Sr. and her children Frank Trevino Jr., Thomas J. Trevino, Sylvia Macias, Laura Gonzales and David Trevino Sr. Her legacy includes 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. In the 1940s, she worked as a riveter for Beechcraft in Wichita. In the 1950s, she had business enterprises in Toppenish that included contracting with Del Monte to house and provide meals for hundreds of workers from Mexico and India; she operated the Del Monte cafeteria in Toppenish and owned/operated a snack bar in the bowling alley. In the 1960s, she worked in Seattle for the Bon Marche'. From the 1970s through the 1980s, she worked for various social service agencies, including Northwest Rural Opportunities as a recruiter of high school students to attend colleges and universities nationwide. Her love of education was a catalyst that enabled many individuals to pursue higher education that enriched their communities. In her later years, she provided expert translation throughout the Toppenish and Yakima Municipal Courts. All her life she was an advocate against injustices and championed for human rights. She was a voracious reader of all types of literature. She was a wonderful conversationalist that led to many great conversations with all types of individuals. She was the first leader of the Guadalupanas of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings. Rosary services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Church in Toppenish. A memorial Mass will be held at 5 p.m. Friday. A dinner will be held at the Parish Hall following the memorial Mass. Memorials may be made to Healing Journeys, P.O. Box 221417, Sacramento, CA 95822. www.healingjourneys.org. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home of Toppenish.

Esther Stricker 1913-2003
HOISINGTON - Esther Stricker, 89, died Oct. 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Trego County, the daughter of Christian and Mary Katherine Schneider Rohn. She married David Stricker April 11, 1937, at Trego Center. A resident of Hoisington for four years, coming from Ness and Trego counties, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Stricker was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Ron Stricker of Hoisington; two sisters, Olinda Wiedeman and Edna Ziegler, both of WaKeeney; one grandson; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ferd Rohn, Emmanuel Rohn and Alvin Rohn; and two sisters, Amelia Dietz and Pauline Dietz. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. William O. Horn officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Foundation, the church or donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home.

Earl O. Dearmore 1925-2003
LARNED - Earl O. Dearmore, 78, died Oct. 9 at his home. He was born Feb. 10, 1925, at Mountain Home, Ark., the son of Maynard and Icie White Dearmore. He married Lu Ann Wright Peschka July 23, 1984, at Eureka Springs, Ark. He was a resident of Larned for four years, coming from Seward. Dearmore was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Michael Dearmore of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vic Dearmore of Great Bend; one stepson, Robert Peschka of Larned; one daughter, Vicki Gipson of Scottsdale; one stepdaughter, Lisa Branda of Wilson; one sister, Geneva Traftin of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. The body was cremated. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend.

James F. Ludes 1922-2003
James F. Ludes, 81, of Great Bend, died Oct. 7 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 21, 1922, at Salina, the son of Bernard and Genevieve McMillan Ludes. He married Patricia Ann Poort in 1947 at Salina. She died in 1961. He married Evelyn Wray Bryson July 20, 1963, at Lyons. A resident of Great Bend, he was a former manager at Central Kansas Elevator of Lyons and a licensed independent insurance agent since 1969. Ludes was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, a former member of American Legion Argonne Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, Petroleum Club and Lake Barton Golf Club, all of Great Bend, and former president of Great Bend Chapter of American Cancer Society, former president of Lyons Chamber of Commerce and Lyon's Town and Country Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Terry Ludes of Larned and Michael Ludes of Great Bend; three daughters, Linda Ludes of Great Bend, Cindy Eldridge of Topeka and Jackie Morrell of Ellinwood; one brother, Ed Ludes of Great Bend; four sisters, Mary Jane Ryan and Patricia Weisendanger, both of Salina, Regina Hogan of Riverside, Calif., and Joan Machin of Escondido, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Ludes and Bill Ludes. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mount Calvary cemetery in Salina and will be announced by Ryan Mortuary of Salina. Memorials are suggested to Barton County Relay for Life for cancer prevention, in care of Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend.

Novella Lois Hinton 1916-2003
Novella Lois Hinton, 86, of Great Bend, died Oct. 7 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center of Great Bend. She was born Nov. 27, 1916, at Ardeola, Mo., the daughter of Edwin and Stella Hopkins Stewart. She married Elvis D. Hinton July 15, 1934, in Bernie, Mo. He died March 25, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since August 1995, coming from St. Louis, Mo., she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hinton was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship and Joy Group, all of Great Bend. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lois Ann and the Rev. William 'Bill' F. Johnson of First Christian Church of Great Bend; one brother, Howard Clary of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one grandchild, Eric William Johnson and wife Audrey of Great Bend; and two great-grandchildren, Derek Johnson and Courtney Johnson. She was preceded in death by one brother, Travis B. Clary; and one sister, Virginia Griffin. Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, both at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, and from 2 p.m. until service time Friday at the church. Another funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, Mo. Burial will be at Dexter cemetery in Dexter, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Memorials are suggested to Great Bend First Christian Church Building Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
