LYONS - Edwin H. Suhler, 63, died Nov. 29 at Sandstone Height Nursing Home in Little River. Memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with the Rev. Richard Andrus officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons with full military honors performed by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church of Lyons, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Bell & Star Fund in care of the funeral home.

Blanche Pearl Scheideman 1918-2003
LARNED - Blanche Pearl Scheideman, 85, died Nov. 24 at Larned Healthcare Center in Larned. She was born May 20, 1918, in Gladwin County, Mich., the daughter of Abram Lincoln and Kathryn Ann Epler. She was a 1937 graduate of Abilene High School, a graduate of Marion College in Marion, Ind., and took courses from Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University, Barton County Community College and Emporia State University. She married Ike Scheideman May 30, 1954, in Larned. He died July 13, 1964. A resident of Larned since 1949, coming from Miltonvale, Ind., she was a teacher for USD 495 for 36 years. Mrs. Scheideman was a member of First Baptist Church of Larned, Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Iota Chapter, Fort Larned National Education Association, Tetulia Club of Larned, KNEA, NEA and Walnut FCE. She was a second cousin of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Karen Smith of Jerome, Idaho, and Olive Ruehlen of Larned; two sisters, Opal Engle of Abilene and Grace Campbell of Rapid City, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Ethel Blackburn and Doris Olsen; four brothers, Ruel Epler, Grant Epler, Russell Epler and Paul Epler; and one sister, Martha Irene Epler. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. John Hester officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at the mortuary chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, First Southern Baptist Church, both of Larned, or American Cancer Society, all in care of the mortuary.

Carrol Brent Newell 1919-2003
STAFFORD - Carrol Brent Newell, 84, died Nov. 24 at his farm home. He was born Aug. 7, 1919, at his family home in rural Stafford, the son of Samuel Brent and Alma Alice Langdon Newell. He was a 1937 graduate of Stafford High School. He married Doris L. Grider May 25, 1946, in Bogalusa, La. A lifetime resident of rural Stafford, he was a farmer. Newell was a member of Stafford United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving under General George S. Patton's 65th Division in Germany as a supervisor and mechanic. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Connie Zumult of Stafford and Kathy Layton of Overland Park; two sisters, Margaret Humphrey of Fort Collins, Colo., and Maridene Lundstrom of Lindsborg; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Newell; and one brother, Clinton Newell. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice or Stafford United Methodist Church, both in care of the chapel.

Dorothy Ilene Karnes 1926-2003
Dorothy Ilene Karnes, 77, of Great Bend, died Nov. 24 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 16, 1926, at Studley, the daughter of Oscar A. and Elma Voyles Karnes. She was a graduate of Sheridan Community High School in Hoxie and received her bachelor of science and masters of science in education from Fort Hays State University. A resident of Great Bend for 29 years, coming from Beloit and Hoxie, she taught at Lone Star from 1944-1945, Bow Creek from 1945-1953, Hoxie Grade School from 1953-1972, Beloit Elementary School from 1972-1974 and Otis-Bison Elementary from 1974-1988. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Great Bend, the local teachers' association, Kansas State Teachers' Association, National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. Survivors include three brothers, Frank Karnes of Hoxie, James Karnes of Loveland, Colo., and Gerald Karnes of Salina. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Karnes; and one sister, Gladys Breeden. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Bow Creek cemetery in Hoxie. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, Sheridan County Library in Hoxie or American Heart Association, all in care of the funeral home.

Opal R. Hann 1911-2003
HANSTON - Opal R. Hann, 91, died Nov. 22 at Hays. She was born Dec. 2, 1911, at Hanston, the daughter of Homer and Lora Ellis Salmans. She married John B. Hann July 18, 1931, at Lyons. He died May 25, 2003. A lifetime resident of Hanston, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hann was a member of First Baptist Church of Hanston. Survivors include two daughters, Lelah Mae Webster of Tucson, Ariz., and Terlyn Jon Shaw of Broomfield, Colo.; one sister, Goldie Kolb of Nickerson; 17 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Duane 'Sandy' Hann; one daughter, Patrica Ann Smith; seven brothers, Otha Salmans, Frank Salmans, Cecil Salmans, Ronald Salmans, Loren Salmans, Wayne Salmans and Vance Salmans; and three sisters, Vivian Graber, Bernice Barta and Ruth Powell. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church of Hanston, with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at Hanston cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday and from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, all at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Reese M. 'Cam' Shaw 1978-2003
STAFFORD - Reese M. 'Cam' Shaw, 25, died Nov. 22. He was born June 12, 1978, at Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of George W. 'Bill' III and Okema Davis Shaw. He was a 1996 graduate of Stafford High School and attended Dodge City Community College, playing football for the Dodge City Conquistadors. A Stafford resident since 1986, he was employed in the maintenance department at Doskocil Foodservice in Hutchinson. Shaw was involved in Stafford Trojan athletics and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Survivors include his parents of Stafford; two brothers, G.W. Shaw of San Antonio, Texas, and Ray T. Shaw of San Diego, Calif.; and his grandmother, Nan Shaw of Oklahoma City. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Andrew Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Stafford cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Stafford Educational Foundation Athletic Fund, in care of the chapel.

Eugenia M. 'Genie' Williams 1922-2003
Eugenia M. 'Genie' Williams, 81, of Great Bend, died Nov. 23 at her home. She was born Oct. 6, 1922, the daughter of Roy and Helen Collister Currie. She married Jack J. Williams Feb. 22, 1949, at Wamego. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Salina, she was a homemaker and secretary for Foster Lumber, Diamond International and was instrumental in forming R&S Digital. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend, Women's Golf Association and American Quarter Horse Association. Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Cynthia Christiansen of Great Bend, Candace A. Nuss of Hoisington and Nan Matthews of Pacifica, Calif.; one brother, Roy G. Currie of Westmoreland; one sister, Kathleen Johnson of Pittsburg; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Carnahan-Garrison cemetery in Olsburg. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Beatrice 'Bea' Adele Lindberg 1917-2003
ULYSSES - Beatrice 'Bea' Adele Lindberg, 86, died Nov. 21 at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. She was born May 1, 1917, at Stafford, the daughter of Albert Roy and Lina Harriet Nicolet Batman. She married Donald Clark Lindberg May 12, 1940, in rural McPherson. He died Nov. 12, 1992. A resident of Ulysses, formerly of Great Bend, Leoti, Sublette and Dallas, Texas, she was a teacher in Seward and in Barton County, a farmer and rancher, owner and operator of Lindberg Lanes and a trailer court in Sublette. Survivors include one son, Ronald Roy Lindberg of Lewis; two daughters, Donna Lindberg Ongay of Dallas and Sonja Wooldridge of Ulysses; one brother, Oliver Batman of Great Bend; two sisters, Eunice Folds of Great Bend and Phyllis Griffin of Sublette; and six grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at New Gottland Covenant Church, with the Rev. Ken Busse officiating. Burial will be at New Gottland Lutheran cemetery in rural McPherson. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time today at the church. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church or New Gottland Covenant Church, both in care of Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

John Charles Manning 1939-2003
OVERLAND PARK - John Charles Manning, 64, died Nov. 16 at his home in Overland Park. He was the son of Carroll and Annabel Manning. He was a graduate of Emporia State Teachers College. A resident of Overland Park, he was employed by Western Electric of Overland Park, AT&T of Dallas, Texas, and was retired from Lucent Technologies of Denver, Colo. Manning was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Overland Park, Knights of Columbus, Spirit Movers of Holy Spirit Parish, Naval Reserve Association, Military Officers Association of America, Parkinson's Foundation of the Heartland, a Boy Scout leader and Little League coach. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as a naval flight officer and retiring from Naval Reserves as a captain. Survivors include his wife, Judy, of the home; one son, John Manning of Stafford, Va.; one daughter, Julie Manning of Mission; his father of Ellinwood; one brother, Mike Manning of Great Bend; four sisters, Carol Ann Martin of Paola, Mary Margaret Brown of Olathe, Susan Smith of Sussex, Wis., and Jane Murray of Wichita; and three grandchildren. Funeral was Nov. 21 at the church with burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to Parkinson's Foundation of the Heartland, in care of Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood.

Dorothy M. Hawkins 1927-2003
ISABEL - Dorothy M. Hawkins, 76, died Nov. 17 at Wichita. She was born July 4, 1927, at Humansville, Mo., the daughter of James Amsa and Mary Jane Kenny Goodenough. She married William Hobert Hawkins May 9, 1946, at Harrison, Ark. He died in 1986. A longtime Barber County resident, she was a homemaker and worked in several restaurants around Medicine Lodge and at Russ' Market in Pratt. Survivors include three sons, Jim Hawkins of Crestview, Fla., and Don Hawkins and Ron Hawkins, both of Medicine Lodge; one daughter, Sherrian Abraham of Wichita; two brothers, Jess Goodenough of Denver, Colo., and Bill Goodenough of Great Bend; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Goodenough, and one grandson, James Allen Jr. Funeral was held Thursday at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home in Medicine Lodge with the Rev. Tom Walters officiating. Burial was at Isabel cemetery. Memorials are suggested to donor's local hospice or Leukemia Society of America, in care of the funeral home.

Erman L. Oelkers 1929-2003
McCRACKEN - Erman L. Oelkers, 74, died Nov. 20 at his home northeast of McCracken. He was born Oct. 28, 1929, in rural Rush County, the son of John B. and Ethel R. Carman Oelkers. He was a graduate of La Crosse High School. He married Jean Hardwick Aug. 1, 1952, in La Crosse. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer and stockman. Oelkers was a member and deacon of First Christian Church in La Crosse. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Galen L. Oelkers of Smyrna, Ga.; one daughter, Dr. Shelley J. Oelkers of La Crosse; one brother, Lawrence Oelkers of Hays; one sister, Fern Zimmerman of Hays; and four grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Troy Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Eva T. Strawn 1917-2003
HUTCHINSON - Eva T. Strawn, 86, died Nov. 21 at Good Samaritan Center. She was born March 20, 1917, in Boyero, Colo., the daughter of James Joseph and Sara Elizabeth Hoffmann Cullen. She was a graduate of Kinsley High School. She married Lawrence O. Strawn May 18, 1934, at Kinsley. He died March 26, 1974. A resident of Hutchinson since 1947, coming from Wichita, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Strawn was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and Ladies Altar Society, both of Hutchinson. Survivors include four sons, Larry Strawn, Don Strawn, Dan Strawn and Jim Strawn, all of Hutchinson; one daughter, Joyce Herrell of Pretty Prairie; one sister, Angela Hirsh of Pratt; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, infant twin Paul Strawn, John Strawn, James Strawn and Leon Strawn; seven sisters, Catherine Loss, Rosanna Tarman, Margaret Scott, Agnes Foley, Nellie Moran, Emily Weber and Alice Pursley. Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Revs. Stuart Smeltzer and Ned J. Blick officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Center, in care of the mortuary.

Mary Jacobs 1914-2003
Mary Jacobs, 89, of Great Bend, died Nov. 22 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 28, 1914, at Liebenthal, the daughter of John and Anna Wittman Schupman. She married Ned 'Shorty' Jacobs May 28, 1928, at Liebenthal. He died June 6, 1985. A resident of Great Bend since 1940, coming from Liebenthal and La Crosse, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Jacobs was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic church in Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Jenneth Karlin of Great Bend; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Walter Jacobs; one daughter, Joyce May; two brothers, Peter Schupman and Paul Schupman; three sisters, Albertina Jacobs, Josephine Schaffer and Lydia Fox; and two grandsons, Edmond Lloyd and John Taylor Jr. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen, in care of the funeral home.
