Maxine May

Maxine Blanche May, 79, of Milltown, Ind., formerly of Pike County, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Clark Memorial Hospital, Clarksville, Ind.

She was born in Hardy, June 15, 1932, the daughter of the late William Wordy May and Gladys Marie Casey May.

She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph May and Gordon May; and one sister, Eleanor Hatfield.

She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

She is survived by three sons, Hershel A. Hughes of Stone, Dennis A. Hughes of Inez and Todd B. Hughes of Panama City, Fla.; three daughters, Freda L. Young of Milltown, Ind., Vivian E. Jones of Panama City and Christy L. Hughes of Georgia; one brother, Raymond May of Grundy, Va.; two sisters, Alberta King of Pikeville and Lynn Price of Paintsville; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.

Mary Miner

Mary Davis Miner, 55, of Wilmington, Ohio, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, in Ohio.

She was born in South Carolina, March 6, 1956, the daughter of the late George and Berry Patrick Davis.

She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Davis; and one sister, Doris White.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Miner; six children, Oscar Phipps Jr., Georgia Diamond, Donald Diamond Jr., Daniel Miner, David Miner and Joseph Miner; and two brothers, Haywood Davis and Michael Davis.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, in the Community Cemetery, Jamboree. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.

Kenneth Robinson

Kenneth Arnold Robinson, 72, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Pike County, Feb. 13, 1939, the son of the late Walter Grey Robinson and Dorsie Sturgill Robinson.

He was a retired C&O Railroad conductor, owner/operator of his own construction company, a Mason/member of the Thomas C. Cecil Lodge, and a Kentucky Colonel.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Scot Robinson, who died Sept. 17, 1992; and one sister, Phyllis Wagner.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Carolyn Williams Robinson; three daughters, Sherri Renee Robinson of Cincinnati, Angela Darlene Clevinger (Greg) of Pikeville, Shana Renee Belcher (Trevor) of Bristol, Va.; two brothers, Walter Robinson Jr. of Shiloh, Ohio, and Clinton Robinson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Donna Sue Maynard of Pikeville; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Jeff Stanley officiating. Burial followed in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.

Pallbearers will be Trevor Belcher, Dylan Belcher, Greg Clevinger, Garrett Clevinger, Austin Clevinger, Westin Clevinger, Mason Clevinger, Patton Thompson and Scot Robinson.

Clayton Swiney

Clayton Swiney, 56, of Elkhorn City, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at his home.

He was born in Buchanan County, Va., Sept. 27, 1955, the son of the late Jimmie Swiney and Myrtle Childers Swiney.

He was a coal miner.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Simms.

He is survived by one son, David Clayton Swiney of Grundy, Va., two daughters, Kimberly Swiney of Grundy and Jessica Adams of Abingdon, Va.; one brother, William Swiney of Elkhorn City; and two sisters, Ann Edwards of Haysi, Va., and Pearl Stanley of Elkhorn City.

Funeral services were held at noon Thursday, Dec. 22, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Ed Belcher officiating. Burial followed in the Hackney Cemetery, Lower Grassy, Breaks, Va. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Osker Thacker

Osker Thacker, 89, of Canada, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26.

Zella Wright

Zella Damron Wright, 94, of Robinson Creek, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at the Signature Health Care Center, Pikeville.

She was born in Pike County, May 14, 1917, the daughter of the late James H. Damron and Minnie Hopkins Damron.

She was a member of the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Wright; two brothers, Arthur Damron and Oscar Damron; two sisters, Mary Stewart and Edith Damron; one grandson, Kenneth Dale Scott; and one great-grandson.

She is survived by three sons, Lester Wright Jr. of Front Royal, Va., Ronnie Gene Wright of Appomattox, Va., Danny Dale Wright of Jonancy; two daughters, Violet Ann Scott of Jonancy and Rita Sue Ison of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Dolph Kelly, Arnold Coleman, Billy Akers and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery, Yeager. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Tonyie Chafin

Tonyie Gail Chafin, 66, of Varney, W.Va., died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born in Newtown, W.Va., Sept. 27, 1946, the daughter of the late Vernon Childers and Gertrude Chambers Childers.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Michael "Mike" Childers.

She is survived by one son, Chad Chafin of Newtown; two daughters, Kelly Preece of Slaters Branch and Stacy Fields of Varney, W.Va.; one brother, Vernon Childers of Englewood, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Missy Webb officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Hatfield Cemetery, Newtown. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan, W.Va.

Billy Holland Jr.

Billy Eugene Holland Jr., 48, of Poor Bottom, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Chicago, July 25, 1962, the son of Jeanette Belcher Holland of Poor Bottom and the late Billy Holland Sr.

He was a truck driver and of the Baptist faith.

Besides his mother, he is survived by one son, Trenton Holland of Poor Bottom; and one grandchild, Layla Gayle Holland.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Belcher Family Cemetery, Hopkins Fork of Caney. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Saturday with services nightly at 7.

Cecil Slone

Cecil Slone, 81, of Myra, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at his home.

He was born at Fishtrap, Dec. 31, 1930, the son of the late Sam Slone and Myrtle Dale Slone.

He was retired, formerly employed by the Pike County Board of Education, and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Slone.

He is survived by two sons, Carter Slone of Myra and William Slone of Hazard; three daughters, Peggy Horn of Stambaugh, Erma Rife of Archdale, N.C., and Sherry Slone of Pikeville; three brothers, Blake Slone, Montie Slone and George Slone; one sister, Beulah Justice; four grandchildren, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Fred Rife and Jamie Miracle officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

James Conley

James Ray Conley, 50, of Martin, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Auburn, Ind., May 4, 1962, the son of the late Burnard and Shirley Short Conley.

He is survived by one brother, Richard Paul Conley of Mousie; and two sisters, Sally Johnson of Topmost and Judy Conley of Martin.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with J.M. Sloce officiating. Burial followed in the Garrett Family Cemetery, Rock Fork. Arrangements were under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.

Freda Fleming

Freda Rose Fleming, 66, of Long Fork Road, Virgie, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at her home.

She was born in Pike County, April 4, 1946, the daughter of the late William McKinney Johnson and Dixie Pearl Johnson Hall.

She was a graduate of Kentucky College of Business, a former teacher's aide at Virgie High School, a member of Hope Freewill Baptist Church, and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, McKinney Roger Johnson.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jimmy Fleming; three daughters, Sandra Fouts (Jerry) and Rita Pearl Hall (Dwayne), both of Long Fork, Mitzi Thacker (Virgil) of Myra; two brothers, Chester Johnson of Long Fork and Lester Johnson of Michigan; one sister, Patricia Stewart of Long Fork; three grandchildren, Jeri Michele Robbins, Larissa Leann Davis and Jason Douglas Hall; and one great-grandchild expected, Avery Robbins.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in the Hope Freewill Baptist Church with Junior Cantrell and others officiating. Burial followed in the Frank Tackett Cemetery, Long Fork. Arrangements were under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
