Phillip Gilman
Phillip Gilman, 43, of Elk Creek, W.Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.
He was born in Williamson, W.Va., Jan. 28, 1969, the son of Chester and Sarah Brewster Gilman of Elk Creek.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Gilman and Johnny Ray Gilman; and two sisters, Ethel Elaine Whitt and Norma Kay Gilman.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Chester Allen Gilman of Huntington, W.Va.; and two sisters, Virginia Gail Coleman of Tennessee and Rita Farley of Elk Creek.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Elk Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with burial following in the Gilman Cemetery, Elk Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Visitation is at the church Tuesday, from 11 a.m. until time for the funeral service.
Shirley McClanahan
Shirley Marie McClanahan, 71, of Newtown, W.Va., died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston, W.Va.
She was born in Merrimac, W.Va., Aug. 8, 1941, the daughter of the late Randolph Mills and Nancy Mahon Mills.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Newtown Pentecostal Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Holbert McClanahan; one son, Robby Mills; three brothers, Oscar Mills, Walter Elswick and Eugene Mills; and two sisters, Lovely Charles and Sylvia France.
She is survived by three sons, Joel McClanahan, Kenneth McClanahan and Cloyd McClanhan; one brother, Buford Randolph Mills; and three grandchildren, Samantha Marie McClanahan, Kenneth Ray McClanahan and Sarah Marie Burgraff.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Newtown Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Randy Casey officiating. Burial will follow in the Merrimac Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W.Va.
Lois Tackett
Lois Young)Tackett of Fort McCoy, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the Monroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla.
Lois was born Feb. 4, 1935, the daughter of the late Coodler and Elkie Sysco Young.
She was retired from Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Young.
Lois is survived by a companion of 42 years, Ernest Hall of Fort McCoy; one sister, Joyce Roberts of Pikeville; one brother, Paul Young of Pikeville; seven children, John P. Tackett of Fort McCoy, Bill R. Tackett of Toler, Lonetta Tackett Salisbury of Toler, Rick D. Tackett of Fort McCoy, Pauline Tackett Hayslip, of Blue Creek, Ohio, Ernest J. Tackett of Toler and Lynda J. Tackett of Fort McCoy; 12 grandchildren, Tammy, Billy, Leslie, Jess, Donny, Bradley, Amanda, Latrisha, James, Melissa, Bliss and Susan; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Lois was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by who all knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Hall Family Cemetery, Toler Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made payable to Thacker Memorial Funeral Home.
Richard Tackett
Richard C. Tackett, 90, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Robinson Creek.
He was born on Long Fork, Feb. 22, 1922, the son of the late Pierce Tackett and Nancy Tackett.
He was a sawmill worker, formerly employed by Coolidge Johnson Company, and was a member of the Old Union Regular Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Ray Tackett; two brothers, Noble Tackett and Clell Tackett; and two sisters, Mary Elswick and Bessie Brandenburg.
He is survived by four sons, Jackie Randall Tackett, Teddy Bruce Tackett, Lindy Tackett and Earl Gene Tackett; one daughter, Katherine Tackett; one stepson, Jackie W. Damron; one stepdaughter, Rose Sutton; one brother, Lavern Tackett; two sisters, Leslie Tackett and Barbara Sloan; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Carson Wright, Jeff Little and James Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Noble Tackett Cemetery, Virgie. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Bessie Wallace
Bessie V. Wallace, 92, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.
She was born in Lincoln County, W.Va., June 21, 1920, the daughter of the late Frank and Mahalia Porter Johnson.
She was a wife, mother and homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Granville Wallace.
She is survived by her children, Terry Wallace of Georgia, Ginger Wallace of Holbert, Ind., Sandy Varney of Naugatuck, W.Va., Kathy Wallace of South Point, Ohio, Tammy Hatfield of Varney, W.Va., and Tonda Branham of Ragland, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Will Compton officiating. Burial will follow in Lenore Memorial Gardens, Lenore, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.
Bernard Yates
Bernard Yates, 79, of Merrimac, W.Va., died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Dec. 26, 1932, the son of the late Lilly Yates.
He was formerly employed by Emory Shipyard and was a member of the Cornerstone Church of Matewan, W.Va.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Whitt Yates.
He is survived by six stepchildren, Linda Fuller and Lifey Burnett, both of Connecticut, Bernice of Vermont, Deborah McCoy of Alabama, Shella Huffman and Melvin McCoy, both of Tennessee; a girl he raised, Donna Yates of Connecticut; one sister, Martha; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Lonnie Blankenship
Lonnie Blankenship, 83, of Mt. Sterling, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
He was born in Argo, Aug. 23, 1929, the son of the late Floyd Blankenship and Linda Keene Blankenship.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Goldie Blankenship; two daughters, Kay Flowler and Leatta Blankenship; two brothers, Doug Blankenship and Donald Blankenship; two sisters, Hazel Fowler and Bobbie Ferrell; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Stopover Church of God, with Harold Layne and Robbie Conn officiating. Burial will follow in the Blankenship Family Cemetery, Stopover. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.
Myrtle Hamilton
Myrtle Hamilton, 97, of Little Robinson Creek, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, May 22, 1915, the daughter of the late Walter Moore and Kelsie Damron Moore.
She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Hamilton; two brothers, Wheeler Moore and Burt Moore; and two grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons, Clifton Hamilton of Virgie, Homer Hamilton of Indiana and James Hamilton of Ohio; two daughters, Shirley Lattimore of Florida and Betty Johnson of Virgie; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Damron Cemetery, Little Robinson Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Saturday, with special services at 7 p.m.
Joe Kirk
Joe Kirk Jr., 76, of Williamson, W.Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Logan General Hospital, Logan, W.Va.
He was born at Good Hollow, Sept. 14, 1936, the son of the late Lyle and Iva Haire Kirk.
Jr. was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. The stories he told of his life will forever be cherished in our hearts. Joe was retired from the Appalachian Regional Hospital, having worked in the service department.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mary Elizabeth Bateman Kirk; four brothers, Jack Kirk, Hobert Kirk, Bud Kirk and George Kirk; and two sisters, Joey Dean and Virginia Tony.
He is survived by his children, Kevin and Susan of Belo, W.Va., Larry and Rhonda of Williamson and Timothy and Jennifer of Teaberry; and nine grandchildren, Jessie, Jonathan, Marlena, Drew, Candice, Timmy, Deana, Eric and Chase.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jack Meade and the Rev. Roger Ooten officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
In honoring Jr.’s wishes there will be no burial. He will be cremated.
James Miller
James E. “JE” Miller, 83, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012 at his home.
He was born in Wayland, Jan. 6, 1929, the son of the late James Reuben Miller and Ada Terry Miller.
He was a retired plant superintendent with East Kentucky Beverage, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Miller; and one sister, Emma Sue.
He is survived by his wife, Madelyn Meade Miller; two sons, Mickey Miller of Lower Johns Creek and Dennis Miller of Cowpen; one daughter, Teresa Gross of Millers Creek Road, Pikeville; six sisters, Imogene Worrix, Ella Jo McGuire, Joyce Justice, Mary Lou Lyons, Rita Rhodes and Zita Tooley; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Tim McClanahan officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Family Cemetery, Lower Johns Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.
