Arlie Potter
Arlie “Mountain Boy” Potter, 88, of Dorton/Jenkins Hwy., Jenkins, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 15, 1923, the son of the late Samuel Newsome and Mary Potter Newsome.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Robbins Potter; one son, Jerry Keith Potter; one daughter, Freda Gay Potter; three brothers, Joe, George and Harrison; and three sisters, Alice, Lizzie and Roxie.
He is survived by three sons, Arnold Ray Potter and Ralph Lee Potter, both of Dorton, Arlie Jr. Potter of Hustonville; one daughter, Pamela Lynn Belcher of Shelby Gap; one stepdaughter, Charlcie Beyersdoerfer of Stanford; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and six stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Dorton General Baptist Church with Buddy Collins and Doug Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is at the church, with services at 7 p.m. Friday.
Debra Ratliff
Debra Faye Ratliff, 55, of Island Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, Sept. 12, 1957, the daughter of the late Bobby Williams and Nancy Hylton Williams.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Clifford Douglas Ratliff; one brother, Ronald Williams; and one sister, Sandy Hess.
She is survived by her husband, Clifford Douglas Ratliff; one son, Tyler Ratliff of Island Creek; one daughter, Angela Ratliff of Elkhorn City; three brothers, Johnny Williams and Bobby Joe Williams, both of Shelbiana and Randy Williams of Phyllis; four sisters, Katherine Thacker and Margaret Chaney, both of Raccoon, Paulette Stalker of Elkhorn City and Draxie Ann Roberts of Lookout; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Greasy Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Jimmy Jack Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Williams-Ratliff Cemetery, Greasy Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is at the church, with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.
James Ratliff
James Potter Ratliff, 86, of Pikeville, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at the VA Medical Center, Hazard.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Lonzie Rose
Lonzie Rose, 75, of Elkhorn City, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born at Poor Bottom, Jan. 9, 1937, the son of the late Ira Rose and Ruthie Elkins Rose.
He was a factory worker.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Ellen Little Rose; two brothers, Billy Joe Rose and Bennie Rose; and five sisters, Gracie Davis, Ester Stewart, Elsie Lawson, Edna Reed and Ethel Rose.
He is survived by one brother, Manuel Rose of Poor Bottom.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Buddy Ratliff Cemetery, Poor Bottom. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Sidney Stafford
Sidney “Sid” A. Stafford, 69, of Varney, W.Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, at his home.
He was born Dec. 20, 1942, the son of Margaret Tolley Stafford of Piqua, Ohio, and the late Frank Stafford, formerly of North Matewan, W.Va.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Stafford, Clarence Stafford and Paul Stafford.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sisters, Linda Davis and Lois Chappie, both of Piqua, Betty Sipple of Dandridge, Tenn.; three brothers, Jack Stafford of Marysville, Ohio, Roland Stafford of Taylorsville, W.Va., and Harry Stafford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Snodgrass officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, North Matewan. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Visitation is Sunday, from noon until time for the funeral service.
Lois Tackett
Lois Tackett, 77, of Ft. McCoy, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Monroe Regional Hospital, Ocala, Fla.
She was born in Pikeville, Feb. 4, 1935, the daughter of the late Coodler and Elkie Sysco Young.
She was a retired janitorial worker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Tackett; and one brother, James Young.
She is survived by seven children, John Paul Tackett of Ocala, Billy Reed Tackett, Ernest James Tackett and Lonetta Salisbury, all of Harold, Ricky Dale Tackett and Lynda Joyce Tackett, both of Ft. McCoy, Pauline Hayslick of Blue Creek, Ohio; three stepchildren, Michael Hall of Southgate, Mich., Teresa Gail Hall of Harold and Geneva Deseck of Selean, Mich.; one brother, Paul Young of Pikeville; one sister, Joyce Roberts of Pikeville; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Butler Hall Cemetery, Harold. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.
Pluma Vipperman
Pluma C. Vipperman, 93, of Kimper, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, July 19, 1919, the daughter of the late Abner Justice and Liza Jane Maynard Justice.
She was a general housekeeper for Canada Coal and a member of Calvary Primitive Baptist Church, Kimper.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Vipperman; two sons, James Robert Vipperman and John Taylor Vipperman; one daughter, Tilda Frances Vipperman; eight brothers; three sisters; and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn Wallace Vipperman (Beverly Kai) of Raccoon and James R. “Robbie” Vipperman (Trish) of Ocala, Fla.; three daughters, Dorothy Hunt (Andrew) and Margaret Ann Coleman (Carl), both of Kimper, Glennis C. Hatfield (Fonso) of Phelps; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Vipperman of Dorton; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Calvary Primitive Baptist Church with Primitive Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Branch Cemetery, Kimper. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Varney, Rocky Hunt, Ron Vipperman, Alex Vipperman, Charles Wallace, Keegan May and Steve Bryant.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Allen Thacker, David May, Barry Thacker, Jimmy Lee Smith, Randall Thornsbury, David Lee May and Mike Elswick.
Myrtle Fletcher
Myrtle Ester Fletcher, 98, of Pikeville, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Signature Healthcare Center.
She was born Aug. 7, 1914 in Williamson, W.Va.., the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Justice Dye.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Pikeville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ward Fletcher; and two brothers, Earl Dye, Ferrell Dye and Gene Dye.
She is survived by a son Walter “Doc” (Colleen) Fletcher of Pikeville and a daughter, Betty Lou Fletcher (Edward Klump) of Jeffersonville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Meredith Elizabeth Owens, Melanie Greene; six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, October 22, at J.W. Call Funeral Home with Bro. Paul Badgett officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Connie Hall
Connie Hall, 60, of Prestonsburg, died Oct. 15, 2012, at Prestonsburg.
She was born, Sept. 13, 1952, in Pikeville, to the late Boone and Mabel Ratliff King.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Hall; and a sister, Sharon Shell.
She is survived by a son, Brent Mullins of Pikeville, a daughter, Stephanie Stone of Prestonsburg; four brothers, Warren King, Emery King, Ricky King, all of Pikeville, and John King of Hueysville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Sunday, October 21, at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, Martin with Omery Chuck Hall officiating.
Arrangement are under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Danny Hatfield
Danny Keith Hatfield, 53, of Man, W.Va., died Wednesday Oct. 17, 2012, in Boone County, W.Va.
He was born June 15, 1959, in Welch, W.Va., the son of Leander Hatfield and the late Janice Boggess Hatfield.
He was preceded in death by his mother, a brother, Michael Bruce Hatfield; and a sister, Wanda Lee Lester.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Brown Hatfield; three sons, Danny Keith Hatfield of Verner, W.Va., Jeremy Hatfield, of Whitman, W.Va., and Dakota Hatfield of the home; three daughters, Alexis, Savannah, Gabrielle Hatfield all of Man, W.Va; his father; a brother, Greg Hatfield of Louisburg, N.C.; four sisters, Kay Justice of Cooks Addition, W.Va., Vickie Grimmett, of Landville, W.Va., Lisa Browning of Whitman, W.Va., Tonya Hatfield of Madison W.Va.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 21, at Greenville Freewill Baptist Church, Hunt, W.Va., with Rev. Mike Johnson and Pastor Joaquine Ooten officiating. Burial will follow in the Browning Dye Cemetery at Verner.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the church.
