Monroe Justice
Monroe Todd Justice, 42, of Jerry Bottom, Huddy, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Aug. 20, 1970, the son of Landon Curtis Justice and Barbara Justice Hackney of Pike County.
He was a disabled coal miner.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Stephanie Raffett Justice of Van Lear; five children, Monroe Michael Justice, Kenneth D. Smiley, Kevin N. Smiley, Kala A. Jarrell and Kacie N. Justice, all of Kentucky; five siblings, Curtis Dwight Justice and Shannon Justice, both of Williamson, W.Va., Rodjetta Smith of Paintsville, Tammy Justice Willets of Florida and Candy Justice Langue of Wellington, Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with David Kilburn and others officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Madie Orsborn
Madie Alice Orsborn, 84, of Ivel, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was the wife of the late James Orsborn.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Tim McClanahan officiating. Burial followed in the Stratton Cemetery, Ivel. Arrangements were under direction of Hall Funeral Home of Martin.
Elbert Poe
Elbert Eugene Poe, 67, of Houston, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Cypress Fairbanks Hospital, Houston.
He was born in Prestonsburg, Aug. 6, 1945, the son of the late Amos and Annie McGuire Poe.
He was a retired construction worker, a Vietnam veteran, a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Affairs, and the Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Malcolm Isaac Poe; and one sister, Ethel Kendrick.
He is survived by five brothers, John Poe of Blue River, David Poe of Pikeville, Amos Poe Jr. of Goshen, Ind., Ronnie Poe of Leesburg, Ind., Billy Poe of Sidney, Ind.; three sisters, Lucy Poe Davis and Faye Crace, both of Prestonsburg and Mable Rickel of Warsaw, Ind.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Amos Poe Cemetery, Prestonsburg. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Ricky Ramey
Ricky Ramey, 59, of Little Hackneys Creek, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born June 25, 1953, the son of the late James Burnis Ramey and Brooksie McKinney Ramey.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Isreal Curry Ramey; and two brothers, Curry Wayne Ramey and Clifford Joe Ramey.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie C. Wright Ramey; one son, Jasper Cory Ramey of Little Hackneys Creek; and six sisters, Nancy Turner, Jeannie Vice, Rita Hampton and Barbara Barker, all of Lexington, Emma Price of Marrowbone and Betty Chapman of Raccoon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Ray Sayers officiating. Burial will follow in the Ballard Ramey Hunt Cemetery, Diles Fork of Toler. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Ester Branham
Ester Branham, 90, of Virgie, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Ashland Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland.
She was born in Pike County, Aug. 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Duran Akers and Patty Elliott Akers.
She was retired, formerly a custodian at Pikeville Medical Center, and was a member of Caney Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Reese Williams; her second husband, Lloyd Hall; her third husband, Ab Branham; one brother, Thomas Akers; and five sisters, Leslie Younce, Nellie Burke, Pearl Holt, Marie Hall and Myrtle Damron.
She is survived by three sons, Bob Williams (Doris), Everett Williams (Karen) and Lloyd Anthony Hall (Sharon); two daughters, Glenna Tackett and Dianne Clement (Gene); one sister, Fannie Casebolt (Andrew); 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Crawford and Brent Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Frank Tackett Cemetery, Long Fork of Virgie. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Sandra Jarrell
Sandra Ruth Jarrell, 63, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Aug. 4, 1949, the daughter of the late Lestle and Myrtle Marie Pugh Varney.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Jarrell; one son, Tommy David Canada; and two brothers, Kenneth Ray Varney and Michael Blake Varney.
She is survived by one son, James Earl Jarrell of Pikeville; two brothers, James L. "Buster" Varney of Stone and Ricky Varney of Kimper; four sisters, Marlene Miller of Florida, Evelyn Meadows of Prestonsburg, Henrietta Hatfield of Blackberry and Janice Holbrook of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Jonathan Taylor Jarrell and Sandra Marie Jarrell, both of Pikeville; and one great-grandchild.
There will be no services.
Mrs. Jarrell will be cremated.
Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Edgar Jarvis Jr.
Edgar "Speedy" Jarvis Jr., 70, of Tram, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Prestonsburg Health Care Center.
He was born in Ivel, Feb. 13, 1942, the son of the late Edgar Jarvis and Nellie Endicott Jarvis Dale.
He worked in maintenance for Highlands Regional Medical Center and attended the Fellowship Church of God, Daniels Creek.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Lynn Jarvis; and eight brothers, George, Mick, Monroe, Esau, Greene, Douglas, Don Dale and Estill Dale.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Jean Hunt Jarvis; three sons, Dwayne Jarvis of Ivel and Randall Lee Jarvis and Duran Jarvis, both of Tram; four brothers, Luther Jarvis of Pikeville, Jake Jarvis of Banner, Merlin Dale Jarvis of Stanville and Herman Jarvis of Michigan; four sisters, Pat Hamilton and Frances Vanover, both of Stanville, Sandra Justice of Betsy Layne and Alice Graves of Tennessee; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Patrick and Russell Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Stratton Cemetery, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation is all day Thursday.
Johnny Stacy
Johnny Kenneth Stacy, 69, of Stanton, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 20, 1943, the son of the late Arthur Daniel and Mavis Stacy.
He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Donato Stacy; one son, William Kenneth Stacy of Mt. Sterling; three daughters, Cheryl Ann Hopson of McKee, Jeannie Dotson of Jeffersonville and Valerie Fields Parker of Morehead; one brother, Bill Stacy of Ohio; three sisters, Joan Fields of Freeburn, Jean Ann Stacy of Ohio and Sharon Vanderpool of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Whitney Hopson, Autumn Dotson and Nolan Dotson; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Davis & Davis Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Stonegate Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Davis & Davis Funeral Home of Stanton.
Burl Whitt
Burl Jackson Whitt, 85, of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
He was born at Stone Coal, May 2, 1927, the son of the late Troy and Kate DeRossett Whitt.
He was a retired pharmacist, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a disc jockey in the Air Force.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Ray Whitt; and two sisters, Viola Hurd and Stella Hall.
He is survived by two sons, Leo Whitt of Louisville and Desmond Whitt of Pleasanton, Calif.; one daughter, Bernadette Lynn Roberts of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sisters, Mae Moore of Elyria, Ohio, and Rebecca Jarrell of Prestonsburg; and one grandson, Jason Roberts.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Phillip Ramey officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday.
Joseph Reed
Joseph Reed, 43, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.
He was born Aug. 25, 1969, in Jeffersonville, Ind., the son of the late Basil and Rebecca Clark Reed.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa Dryden Reed; two sons, Danny Bailey and Shawn Bailey; one brother, Charles Burgett of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Kathy Craven of Columbus; and two grandchildren, Kyle Joseph Bailey and Shawn Bailey.
Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Bennie Tackett
Bennie Joe Tackett, 61, of Clay City, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
He was born in Pikeville, June 24, 1951, the son of the late Clarence and Artie Tackett.
He was employed by Kroger and attended the Freewill Baptist Church, Clay City.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Tackett; one stepson, James Tackett; three brothers, L.J. Tackett, Harold Dean Tackett and Bobby Gene Tackett; and one sister, Dorothy Domino.
He is survived by his wife, Helen King Tackett; three sons, Keith Tackett of Michigan, Tom T. Tackett and Jack Tackett, both of Harold; one daughter, Ilene Aune of Michigan; three stepsons, Dwaine Tackett, David Tackett and Dennis Tackett, all of Harold; one stepdaughter, Tootsie Tackett; 11 brothers and sisters, Archie B. Tackett of Michigan, Jerry Tackett, Irene Rose and Virgie Spears, all of Grethel, Gary Tackett, Eugene Tackett, Tony Tackett, Terry Tackett, Bonnie Allen and Darlene Tackett, all of Harold, Patty Miller of Betsy Layne; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, in the Glen Haven Memorial Chapel with Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in New Haven Memorial Gardens, New Carlisle. Arrangements are under direction of Glen Haven Memorial Chapel of New Carlisle, Ohio.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Lower Toler Church of Christ, Harold, and after noon Friday in Glen Haven Memorial Chapel.
