Shirley Prater
Shirley Ann Prater, 56, of Stopover, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, in Meador, W.Va.
She was born Dec. 2, 1955, the daughter of the late Edgar Prater and Shirley Lee Prater.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, James Hank Prater; one daughter, Angelia Dea Dotson of Meador; two brothers, Danny Prater of Stopover and Perry Joe Prater of Ocean City, Md.; five sisters, Linda Prater, Mable Jean Hunt and Tina Kay Hensley, all of Stopover, Ina Sue Dotson of McCarr and Helen Mahon of Meador; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in the Phelps Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Prater and Pastor Odis Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Bert Prater Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday.
Ample Rowe
Ample J. Rowe, 87, of Feds Creek, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, March 21, 1925, the daughter of the late Alex Childress and Mary Eunice Slone Childress.
She was custodian at Community Trust Bank, Mouthcard, and a member of the Feds Creek Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Rowe; two daughters, Maretta Hartley and Marita Rowe; and one brother, George Childress.
She is survived by two sons, Garther Rowe of Shelbiana and Russell Rowe of Feds Creek; two daughters, Garnell Tilley of Cincinnati and Suetta Clevinger of Pikeville; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Lloyd Holland officiating. Burial followed in the Pikeville Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Melissa Short
Melissa Ann Short, 46, of Surfside Beach, S.C., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
She was born in Southfield, Mich., the daughter of Bunia Smith Short of South Carolina and the late Robert Edward Short.
She was an insurance adjustor.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Robin Short.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one niece, Katelynn Clark; and one nephew, Kyle Loder.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, in the Alley Cemetery, McCarr. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Jayne Snell
Jayne “Misty” Buckner Snell, 63, of Thacker, W.Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Asheville, N.C., Dec. 5, 1948, the daughter of the late Betty Gaddy.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by one son, Marty Gaddy; and one daughter, Deanna Gaddy.
She is survived by her husband, Grover Snell.
In honoring her wishes, she will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
J. Paul Turner
J. Paul Turner, 86, of Belo, W.Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at his home.
He was born at Tom’s Creek, Wise County, Va., March 7, 1926, the son of the late Gertrude Tackett Thompson and Dewey Thompson of Belo.
He was a retired Mingo County, W.Va., educator, beginning his career at Jennys Creek Elementary. He served as principal at Marrowbone Elementary, Kermit Grade School, Lenore Grade School and Lenore Junior High, taught at Lenore High School, and was superintendent of schools from 1975 to 1976.
He was a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company for 16 years prior to becoming an educator. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Newsome Turner, to whom he was married
45 years; and one son, Michael Turner.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Mary Jean Webb Turner; two children, Paula Kay Maynard of Belo and Alan Turner of Cincinnati; one stepson, Dr. Barry Marcum of Atlanta; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Weaver Mortuary Chapel.
with Dallas Moore officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery, Belo. Arrangements were under direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.
Georgia Campbell
Georgia Spears Campbell, 83, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Belfry, Jan. 22, 1929, the daughter of the late Tom and Margaret Lurane Crum Spears.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Third Avenue Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Campbell; two brothers, Tom Spears Jr. and Chadwick Spears; and three sisters, Hester Wills, Dorothy Bear Saxon and Luna Elizabeth Rose.
She is survived by one son, Lenvil Campbell of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Shelia Howell of Point Pleasant, W.Va., and Rita Eppenbaugh of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Marsha June McConnell of Seabrine, Fla., and Ruth Evelyn Miracle of Chelsea, Mich.; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Collins and Bill Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Campbell Cemetery, Campbells Branch, Water Gap. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Hazel Epling
Hazel Ramey Epling, 90, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Praise, March 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Basil J. Ramey and Florence Adkins Ramey.
She was retired from Sears, and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold I. Epling; two sons, Dr. Gary A. Epling and Ronald J. Epling; three brothers, Woodrow Ramey, Roland Ramey and Julius Ramey; and three sisters, Myrtle Bartley, Chloe Bartley and Joan Hendrickson.
She is survived by one daughter, Lucille Epling Belcher of Belcher; one brother, Jack Ramey of Elkhorn City; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Ford, Jim Ed Belcher and Terry Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Jacqueline Gartin
Jacqueline Tinch Gartin, 76, of Taylorville, W.Va., died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.
She was born in Toronto, Canada, Dec. 20, 1935, the daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine Leeworthy Riesenberger.
She was a homemaker and waitress.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Herbie Butler, James Tinch and Mitchel Tinch.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Gartin; two sons, Darrell Riesenberger of Melvindale, Mich., and Jerry Butler of Warren, Mich.; one daughter, Tammy Dotson of Taylorville; one sister, Marie Burley of London, Canada; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Staten officiating. Burial will follow in the Gartin Cemetery, Taylorville. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Melphia Hall
Melphia Hall, 71, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Aug. 10, 1941, the daughter of the late William Payne Johnson and Della Meade Johnson.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers, Garland Johnson, Farlin Johnson, Marvin Johnson, Hershell Johnson, Buster Johnson, Okie Johnson, Clifford Johnson, Carmel Johnson, Hurley Johnson; and four sisters, Isabelle Burke, Odgie Anderson, Barbara Spurlock and Lina Tackett.
She is survived by her husband, Rabon Hall; one son, Dwayne Hall of Long Fork; one daughter, Darlene Hall; two brothers, Arnold Johnson of Hebron, Ohio, and Forest Dale Johnson of Long Fork; and one grandson, Cole Ratliff.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Edley Newsome and Phillip Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the B.F. Johnson Cemetery, Long Fork. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Yvonne Howell
Kathleen "Yvonne" Howell, 54, of Rife Branch, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at the Holzer Medical Center, Jackson, Ohio.
She was the daughter of Bertha Jude of Rife Branch and the late Earl Bartram.
She was a retired kitchen supervisor at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College, Williamson, W.Va.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one grandson; her maternal grandparents, Polly and Eli Sturgill; and her paternal grandparents Benjamin and Elizabeth Wilson Bartram.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, John Howell, Jr.; one son, Michael Marcum; one daughter, Melissa Chafin; one stepdaughter, Angela Bush; three brothers, Kenny Bartram, Earnest Bartram and Gary Jude; and four sisters, Debbie Stanley, Brenda Bartram, Donna Bell and Sandy Evans; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the Lilly of the Valley Freewill Baptist Church, Rife Branch, with the Rev. Gene Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in the Sturgill Cemetery, Laurel Creek, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Visitation is at the church, Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until time for the service.
Eleanor Johnson
Eleanor Keesee Johnson, 77, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.
She was born Feb. 11, 1935, the daughter of the late F.P. Keesee and Maudie W. Keesee Hatcher.
She was a medical technologist and worked at Holiday Hospital in Orlando, Fla., and supervised labs in Tampa, Fla. She attended Pikeville College and the University of Kentucky, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.
She is survived by four sons, Roderick "Ricky" Gray-Lewis, John Pierce Gray-Lewis (Barbara), David Colin Gray-Lewis and Dale Allen Gray-Lewis, all of Florida; one sister, Jean Shockey of Pikeville; and two granddaughters, Jacqueline Mason and Kayla Gray-Lewis.
Funeral services will be private, in Orlando.
