Ernest Pack Sr.
Ernest Pack Sr., 63, of Beech Creek, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, in Princeton, W.Va.
He was born in Devon, W.Va., Feb. 3, 1949, the son of the late Oscar Sr. and Etta Murphy Pack.
He was a disabled coal miner formerly employed by Old Ben Coal Company and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict as a member of the CoC 802D Engineer Division.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelly Pack; two brothers, Robert Pack and Carl Pack; and two sisters, Nellie Coulter and Anna Lee Gilliam.
He is survived by one son, Ernest Pack Jr. of Princeton; one daughter, Kelly Tolliver of Princeton;
six brothers, Charles "Buck" Pack of Princeton, Woodrow Pack of Powhatan, Va., Oscar "Halo" Pack Jr., James Pack and Gerald Pack, all of Beech Creek, Ray Pack of Richmond, Va.; six sisters, Mary Hardin of Princeton, Opal Goad of Matewan, W.Va., Shirley Chandler of Lake City, Fla., Delores Hughes of Richmond, VA., Erma Jones of Powhatan, Barbara Varney of Newtown, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, KaLeigh Denise Tolliver, Madison MyKell "MyKie" Tolliver and Adan Johnny Duane Tolliver.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Beech Creek Free Pentecostal Church of God with Pastor David Ferguson and the Rev. Lowell Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in the Pack Cemetery, Devon. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
John Potter
John Emil” Hoover” Potter, 77, of Breaks, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.
He was born in Jenkins, Jan. 24, 1935, the son of the late General Quay and Edna Childers Potter.
He was a coal miner and a logger.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Katy Potter Mullins; and one brother, Paul Baker.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Harris Potter; five sons, John Morris Potter of Huntington, Ind., Steven Potter of Bluefield, W.Va., and Anthony Potter, Brian Potter and Shawn Potter, all of Breaks; two daughters, Leetta (Kevin) Puckett of Breaks and Giselle Lynn (Michael) Niece of Whitesburg; three sisters, Mary (Jack) Smallwood, and Sharon Kelly, both of Mooresburg, Tenn., and Peggy Swindall of Ashcamp; eight grandchildren, Miranda Norman, John Daniel Potter, Megan Potter, Tyler Potter, Cody Potter, Kaitlyn Puckett, Colby Puckett and Kevin Ray Puckett II; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Baker officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Ronnie Dale Ray
Ronnie Dale Ray, 64, of Chattaroy, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.
He was born in South Williamson, Jan. 13, 1948, the son of the late Enos Ray and Elmay Maynard Ray.
He was a 42-year employee of TRAMO, Inc., where he was the supervisor of the electrical department, and was a member of the Hardy Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kay Crum Ray; an infant son, Matthew Ray; and one brother, Ervin Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Nolen Ray; two daughters, Amy Curry of Chattaroy and Nicole Clevenger of Forest Hills; one stepson, James Perry, of Genoa, W.Va; two stepdaughters, Tammy Chafin and Jessica Leep, both of Genoa; three brothers, Virgil Ray of Goodlettsville, Tenn., Harless Ray of Hardy and Gene Ray of Van Wert, Ohio; one sister, Dottie Bolton of Van Wert; four grandchildren, and five stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Weaver Mortuary Chapel with Ed Lockard officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Weaver Mortuary Inc. of West Williamson.
Sammie Rowe
Sammie Billy Joe Rowe, 75, of Virgie, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Lawrence County, March 16, 1937, the son of the late Henry and Esta Lowe Rowe.
He was a retired coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Cecel Ray Rowe; eight brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Thacker Rowe; one son, Billy Joe Rowe of Lawrence County; two daughters, Sharon Rowe and Trina Vanhoose, both of Lawrence County; one brother, Orville Rowe of Lawrence County; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Richardson Primitive Baptist Church with Tom Meade and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Tadpole Cemetery, Lawrence County. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Visitation is at the church after noon Wednesday.
Margaret Smith
Margaret Lea Smith, 78, of Moundsville, W.Va., formerly of Matewan, W.Va., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Mingo County, W.Va., May 13, 1934, the daughter of the late Earl Johnson and Lula Johnson.
She was a retired beautician, having worked for 21 years, and was a member of Ash Avenue Church of God, Moundsville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd G. Smith; her second husband, Charles Byus; five sisters, and three brothers.
She is survived by two sons, William L. Smith and Everett W. Smith; one daughter, Teresa D. Devlin; one brother, Boyd Eddie Orrell; three sisters, Estelene Prater, Lula Gallimore and Joyce Blackburn; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan.
Gypsy Sparks
Gypsy Ruth Maynard Sparks, 84, of Hatfield, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born in Hatfield, Aug. 30, 1928, the daughter of the late Richard Delmon and Gladys Hazel Stepp Maynard.
She was the owner/operator of the former Tonnaloka Ceramic Shop at Hatfield, and assisted her parents in the Maynard Grocery. She was a homemaker, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of Rogers Park Missionary Baptist Church.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Norvil Sparks Jr.; and one sister, Gladys Vivian Friend.
She is survived by two daughters, Nyoka Elaine Runyon and Deborah Smith, both of Hatfield; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Shawn Ward officiating. Burial followed in the Stepp Family Cemetery, Hatfield. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Freddy Thacker
Freddy Thacker, 54, of Wolfpit, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Jan. 29, 1958, the son of Marie Thacker Coleman and the late Clyde Thacker.
He was a disabled coal miner.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Steve Thacker.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, JoWanda Ward Thacker; two daughters, Joann Biliter of Freeburn and Lisa Varney of Raccoon; four brothers, Vernon Thacker of Winchester, Denver Thacker and Clyde Ray Thacker, both of Wolfpit, Johnnie Thacker of Raccoon; one sister, Rena Stewart of Rockhouse; two grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Susan Willis
Susan Marie Marcum Willis, 55, of Naugatuck, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Vernatters Branch, Naugatuck.
She was born Dec. 19, 1956, the daughter of the late Don Mars Willis and Ferbie Kathryn Anderson Willis Mahon.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brandy Marcum.
She is survived by one son, Donald Thomas (Tommy) Willis of Vernatters Branch; two granddaughters, Brandy and Samantha; one sister, Patricia Elkins of Nolan, W.Va.; and two brothers, Donnie Willis of Vernatters Branch and Eddie Willis of Huntington, W.Va.
The body has been cremated and the family will observe private graveside services at noon Friday, Dec. 7, in the family cemetery at Vanatters Branch. Arrangements are under direction of Weaver Mortuary Inc. of West Williamson, W.Va.
Erva Baker
Erva Thacker Baker, 81, of Big Stone Gap, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap.
She was born in Pike County, the daughter of the late Elijah and Clara Thacker.
She was a 1949 graduate of Hellier High School, a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ and recently attended the First Christian Church, Big Stone Gap.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Baker; and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by one son, Roy Baker of Big Stone Gap; four sisters, Christine Childers of Big Rock, Va., Wanda Justice of Pikeville, Betty Blankenship of Grundy, Va., Rita Tackett of Prestonsburg; three grandchildren, Scott Baker, Jasmine Baker and Jill Baker; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, Big Stone Gap, with Greg Townsend officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the Annie E. Young Cemetery with Jerry Bliffen officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Clintwood-Colley Funeral Home of Clintwood, Va.
Shiela Bevins
Shiela Kay Lawson Bevins, 45, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pikeville, Oct. 16, 1967, the daughter of the late Robert Lawson and Vera Coleman Lawson.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermel Lawson and Michael Lawson.
She is survived by two sons, Brandon Bevins and Ryan Bevins; five brothers, Don Roger Lawson, Tracy Lawson, Jackie Lawson, Joey Lawson and Mickey Lawson; one sister, Gloria Robinson; and one grandchild, Brantley Bevins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Roger Lawson, Ray Tackett and Delon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.
