Sandra Steele
Sandra Kay Steele, 61, of Newport, Tenn., formerly of Meador, W.Va., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at her home.
She was born in South Williamson, March 6, 1950, the daughter of the late Estill Mahon and Ruth Simpkins Mahon.
She was a retired beautician.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Leon Steele; one son, Harold Kelly Steele of Newport; one daughter, Alice Lee of Newport; and two grandchildren, Kassandra Steele and Gage Steele.
Private funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the Steele Family Cemetery, Meador Hollow. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan, W.Va.
Martha Varney
Martha Coleman Varney, 58, of Ransom, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, July 14, 1954, the daughter of the late Wade and Martha Jetilee Smith Coleman.
She was a former restaurant worker and was of the Church of God faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Douglas Varney; one son, Billy Joe Varney; two brothers, Wade Coleman Jr. and Bruce Edward Coleman; and one sister, Janice Marie Coleman.
She is survived by one son, Carl Douglas Varney Jr. of Ransom; two daughters, Sabrina Gail Slone and Angela Carol Slone (with whom Martha made her home), both of Ransom; one brother, James Earl Thompson of Illinois; one sister, Claudia Maynard of Rawl, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Angel Slone, Kimberly Slone and J.D. Varney.
Funeral services were held at noon Monday, Dec. 10, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Mike Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Varney Cemetery, Left Fork of Blackberry, Ransom; Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Elbert Lee Young
Elbert Lee "Eli" Young - age 71 of Rockhouse; Hatfield, KY passed away Sunday; December 9, 2012 at the Pikeville Medical Center.
Born December 2, 1941 at Varney, KY; he was the son of the late John and Fannie Slone Young.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 2 brothers Junior and Ester Young; and 3 sisters Mary Maynard, Lillian Ray, and Eunice Burch.
He was a former coal miner and a member of the Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Roseline Heistand Young of Hatfield, KY; 3 sons Elbert Terry (Shirley) Young of Pikeville, KY, Thomas Lee (Jamie)
Young of South Point, OH, and William (Kimberly) Young of Hatfield, KY; 1 daughter Deidre Young of Hatfield, KY; 8 granddaughters Jennifer
Hamilton, Jessica Epling, Crystal Young, Kayla Slone, Katie Young, Amanda Young, Brooke Young, and Courtney Young; 3 great-granddaughters Zoey
Hamilton, Emily Slone, and Peyton Epling; 3 step-grandchildren Brittany Johnson, Ashley Johnson, and Carissa Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday; December 11, 2012 at 12:00 P.M. from the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, KY with Pastor William
Akers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY with Chris Epling, Anthony Fraley, Justin Slone, Ricky West,
Danny Hamilton, and Jonathan Hopkins serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 11:30 until time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, KY.
Adam Adkins Jr.
Adam Adkins Jr., 64, of Marrowbone, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the Hazard Hospice Care Center.
He was born in Pike County, Jan. 26, 1948, the son of the late Adam Adkins and Elsie Rose Adkins Lawson.
He was a retired coal miner, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, a member of the American Legion and a minister in the Rockhouse Unity Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Delbert, Denver, Golden and Tommy; and three sisters, Gladys, Gretis and Josephine.
He is survived by his wife, Lorean Hylton Adkins; three sons, Adam Christopher Adkins of Rockhouse, Chad Allen Adkins of Millard, William Darrel Coleman of Poor Bottom; one daughter, Rebecca Sue Williams of Rockhouse; four brothers, Jimmy Ray Fields, Johnny Rowe, Dennis Dean Adkins and Elbert Adkins; three sisters, Betty Coleman, Dorlene Shell and Ruth Adkins; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Rockhouse Unity Freewill Baptist Church with Eddie Street, Neil Coleman and Terry Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Vera Adkins
Vera Lee Cavins Smith Adkins, 78, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Fleming-Neon, July 7, 1934, the daughter of the late Vancel and Hazel Gore Cavins.
She was a homemaker and had been a member of the Pikeville Freewill Baptist Church since 1981.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Smith; two sisters; and one brother.
She is survived by two sons, Donnie Adkins of Pikeville and Chris England (Tera) of Annville; three daughters, Debbie Crum (Bobby) of Pikeville, Karen May (Robin) of McVeigh, Vickie Adkins Caudill (Leo) of Beckley, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Hannah Belle Caudill, Whitney Dawn Caudill and Robert Dean Crum; and three great-grandchildren, Rhys England, Cash England and Preston Crum.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with David Kilburn officiating. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Guy Alexander
Guy Curtis Alexander, 60, of Williamson, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Williamson, Sept. 4, 1952, the son of the late Robert Alexander and Cherokee Billups Fulgham.
He was a former construction worker and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Michael Alexander; and one sister, Patrecia Alexander.
He is survived by one brother, Robert Steven Alexander of Indianapolis; and one sister, Bobbie Carroll Alexander Childress of Williamson.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Logan Street First Baptist Church, Williamson, with the Rev. Gerald Dotson officiating. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Andy Anderson
Andy Anderson, 39, of Draffin, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Mountain View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City.
He was born in Pikeville, Jan. 13, 1973, the son of Shirley Stewart Coleman of Draffin and the late Larry Anderson.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his mother, he is survived by two sons, Trey Anderson and A.J. Anderson, both of Draffin; one daughter, Kendra Savannah Anderson of South Carolina; and two sisters, Amanda Blackburn and Angela Martin, both of South Carolina.
Memorials may be made to Mountain View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City.
Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Thomas Bryant
Thomas M. Bryant, 60, of Pike County, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at the Hurley Medical Center, Flint, Mich.
He was born in Prestonsburg, April 23, 1952, the son of the late Webster and Edna Hamilton Bryant.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roger Bryant, Orville Bryant and Ralph Bryant.
He is survived by two loving daughters, Sara (James) Teuber and Melissa (David) Edmonds, both of Michigan, and their mother, Jean Kloska; two sons, Kevin Ray (Clara) Griffey and Wesley Blaine (Rachal) Griffey, both of Kentucky, and their mother, Jettie Taylor Bryant; four brothers, Ernest L. Bryant of Michigan, Jimmy Dean Bryant, Lonzo Bryant and Timmy Bryant, all of Pikeville; two sisters, Bethel Martin of Teaberry and Grethel Inman of Michigan; and nine grandchildren.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Samaritan Regular Baptist Church, Mud Creek, with Leonard Kaiser and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
William Cox
William Albert “Bob” Cox, 85, of Grassy Creek Road, Raccoon, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Pike County, the son of the late Willie “Bill” and Cora Ratliff Cox.
He was retired from the Air Force and was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of Johns Creek Chapter 166 of the Disabled American Veterans, and he was DAV member of the year for 2010-2011. He was also a member of the Flight Club at the Pikeville-Pike County Airport. He was a member of the Grassy Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters Marsha Lynn Cox and Alisha Ann Cox; and brother Leon Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Cox; sons, John W. Cox, of Ratliff Creek, William A. Cox Jr., of Inez, Colin C. Cox, of Lawrenceburg, and Roy Dale Adkins, of Pikeville; a daughter, Angela K. Cox Reynolds, of Raccoon; and 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Community Funeral Home, with Brad Williamson and Grassy Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana, with DAV rites to be performed at graveside by Johns Creek Chapter 166.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, with services at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home, Zebulon.
