Cullen Lockard
Cullen Lacy Lockard, 74, of Turkey Creek, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at the Tug Valley Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Turkey Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Hobart Hamilton, Richard Staton, and Eb Sesco officiating. Burial will follow in the Reed-Lockard Cemetery at Turkey Creek.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m Friday, at the church, with nightly services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Sarah Reed
Sarah Hazel Reed, 85, of Turkey Creek, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at Trinity Healthcare.
Funeral services will be held at 11. am. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Hobart Hamilton and Richard Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the Reed Cemetery at Turkey Creek.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday night, at the chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Treavor Slone
Treavor Slone, 49, of Elkhorn City, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Original Bailey Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.
Gladys Vargo
Gladys Vargo, 99, of Clarksville, Ind., formerly of Stone, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany, Indiana.
She was born in Tennessee, July 10, 1917.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alex Vargo Jr., who died in 2002; and her son and daughter-in-law, Carl Edward and Margaret Vargo.
She is survived by her daughter, with whom she made her home, Wanda Sue Kane (Eddie) of Clarksville, Ind.; son, David Vargo (Patricia) of Belfry; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Annie Ophelia “Faye” Varney
Annie Ophelia “Faye” Varney, 93, of Blountville, Tenn., formerly of Matewan, W. Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at the Wellmont Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn.
She was born on Oct. 26, 1922, to the late John James and Gertrude Presley Edwards.
She had formerly worked as a welder in the Naval ship yard as one of Rosie the Riveters during World War II.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Varney; three brothers; James, Walter, and Robert Edwards; one sister, Helen Francis Stacy; and one great-grandchild.
She is survived by three sons, Robert Varney (Karen Gibson) of Blountville, Tenn., Gary Varney (Anetha) of McCarr, and Lesley Varney (Rosie) of Penny; and two daughters, Carol Carter (Walton) of Kingsport, Tenn. and Benita Barker (Jimmy) of Kingsport, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Robert Varney II, Jamie Varney, Steven Carter, Lesley Varney, Lucinda Little, Brian Harmon, William Harmon, Rachel Barker, and Jeff Barker; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Freewill Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m Friday, with services beginning at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Alice Burke
Alice Burke, 86, of Myra, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, at her residence.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by the Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Jerry Lean Chaney
Jerry Lean Chaney, 59, of Frozen Creek, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 20, 1956, the son of the late Buster and Emma Lee Anderson Chaney.
He was employed by the state highway department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Bentley, Rachelle Chaney, and infant sister, Joni Chaney.
He is survived by his wife, Alethea Chaney of Frozen Creek; children, Darci Emma Lee Chaney, Misty Smith (Adam) of Frozen Creek, and Debra Lynn Ratliff (Jeremy) of Pikeville; brothers, Roger Chaney (Judy) of Lower Pompey, Rodney Chaney of Grapevine, and Robert Chaney of Chloe Road; sisters, Sandra Bentley of Fords Branch and Patricia Hopkins (Jimmy) of Dorton; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Shan Lockard officiating. Burial will follow in the Bent Ridge Cemetery at Meta.
Visitation is all day Wednesday, with services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Elbert Damron
Elbert Damron, 80, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at Physicians Regional Hospital.
He was born Sept. 30, 1936, the son of the late Charley and Rhoda Damron.
He was a retired baker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna Louise Parsons Damron; one daughter, Chris Ann Damron; one brother, Joey Damron; and three sisters, Myra Childress, Sarah Damron, and Sina Damron.
He is survived by one son, Johney Damron of Ohio; five daughters, Mary Kay Damron and Diana Gay Damron both of Ohio, Deanna Church of Dorton, Sandra Damron Handshoe of Shelby Gap, and Jessie Newsom of Maynardsville, Tenn.; three brothers, Jesse Damron of Westerville, Ohio, Owen “Dirk” Damron of Ocala, Fla., and Bobby Damron of Shelby Gap; five sisters, Fayetta Kelly of Shelby Gap, Ann Arnett of Marengo, Ohio, Patricia Kelly of Shelby Gap, Edna Perkins of Detroit, Mich., and Shirley Vanover of Jenkins; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Damron, Ashley Church, Christopher Damron, Kimberly Church, Nathan Ward, Samantha Handshoe, Tiffany Church, Danielle Newsom, Kayla Handshoe, Melissa Newsom, Kristen Newsom, Tuell Newsom; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Ward and Ethan Bentley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with JR Cantrell and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Rob Ratliff Cemetery at Shelby Gap. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Larry Edward Evans
Larry Edward Evans, 69, a resident of Trinity Health Care Services in Williamson, W. Va., died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.
He was born at Switzer, W. Va., May 24, 1947, the son of the late Luther and Pauline Browning Evans.
He was a member of the National Guard, a former box factory worker, and was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers Harold, Bill, and Jimmy Lee; and three sisters, Edith, Josephine, and Betty Jo.
He is survived by one son, Larry Jr.; two brothers, Jerry Evans of Williamson, W. Va. and Robert Coleman Evans (Patty) of Phelps; several nieces; and one nephew.
Cremation will take place and interment will follow in the Phelps Community Cemetery at Abes Branch, Phelps. Arrangements are under the direction of the Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Carl Douglas “Doug” Justice Jr., 73, of Huddy, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Bob Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Home of Toler.
Paris Mullins
Paris Mullins, 85, of Elkhorn City, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, in Elkhorn City.
He was born in Pikeville, July 29, 1931, the son of the late Marcus and Siller Anderson Mullins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Caudill Mullins; and nine brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his son, Tony Mullins of Elkhorn City; three daughters, Barbara Gortney (Blake) of Gray, Tenn., Deborah Chambers (Barry) of Pikeville, and Stephanie Ratliff (Terry) of Millard; three sisters; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Scotty Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Elkhorn City Cemetery at Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, with services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.
Francis J. Smith
Francis J. Smith, 79, of Ransom, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at Tug Valley Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He was born at Ransom, July 24, 1937, the son of the late App and Jennie Smith.
Francis was a graduate of Belfry High School, Pikeville College, Eastern Kentucky University, and Morehead State University. He worked for 40 years as an educator for the Pike County Board of Education, with 23 years at Blackberry Elementary, as a teacher and 17 years as principal. After he retired from the Pike County Board of Education, he began working for the Mingo County Board of Education. He worked as a principal and vice principal for Matewan and Williamson Junior High schools for 10 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, EKEA, KEA, and a Kentucky Colonel. He loved his flowers. He enjoyed planting, gardening, and watching them grow. He also had a great love for his pets. He loved his church, Bluesprings Freewill Baptist, where he was an active member and served as a deacon.
He was a very devoted and loving father and grandfather and beloved husband to his late wife, Ruth C. Smith, of 53 years. He is also preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Smith; and three sisters, Clemma Rotoilio, Lois Smith, and Wanda Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Frances Launa Smith Stanley (Carl) of Forest Hills; grandson, Ethan Cole Stanley of Forest Hills; special second daughter, Teresa Sutton Thacker (David) of Pikeville; special granddaughters, Megan and Madison Thacker; siblings, James Smith (Ann) of Lexington, Darryl Smith (Ruby) of Dante, Va., Wilma Achatz of St. Augustine, Fla.., and Karen Smith (Mike) of Church Hill, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Judi Smith of Highpoint, N. Car.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Hubbard and other ministers, of the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Huddy, with James Ray Smith, Joseph Rotoilio, David Thacker, and other family members and friends serving as pallbearers. Cole Stanley will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Arrangements are under the direction of the R. E. Rogers Funeral of Belfry.
