Gladys Layne

Gladys Layne, 82, of Camp Creek, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Stopover Church of God with Rev. Odis Blankenship and Rev. Paul Stepp officiating. Burial will follow in the Layne Cemetery at Abe’s Branch of Jamboree. Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc., of Matewan, W.Va.

Elwood Parker

Elwood Parker, 77 of Raccoon, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Pike County, Oct. 13, 1938, the son of the l ate Bruce and Gertrude Smith Parker.

He was a coal miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob Parker and Lonnie Parker.

He is survived by his wife, Fern Presley Parker of Raccoon; four sons, Richard Parker of Millard, Chris Justice (Beverly) of Raccoon, Keith Justice (Melanie) of Coal Run and Greg Justice (Christine) of Raccoon; one daughter, DeeAnn Justice of Raccoon; two brothers, Ronnie Parker of Cowpen Rd. and Roger Dale Parker of West Liberty; one sister, Boni Maynard of Raccoon; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in The Community Funeral Home with Richard Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under the direction of The Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

Dewey D. Potter

Dewey D. Potter, 57 of Elkhorn City, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Bailey Funeral Home, Elkhorn City.

Alberta Ruth Adkins Reed

Alberta Ruth Adkins Reed, 86 of Sidney, departed this life into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law Lester and Treasa Reed, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on July 14, 1930, to the late Jack Samuel and Mary McClanahan Adkins.

She was retired from the Pike County Senior Citizens, with over 20 years of service. She was a member of the Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church. She was a special mom, grandmother and mother-in-law and will truly be missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence B. Reed; two sons, Loranzie Dow Reed and Jackie Darrell Reed; one daughter, Paula West Reed; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by six sons, Clarence Reed (Shirley)of Sharp Chapel, Tenn., Jim Reed (Phyllis), Doug Reed (Mary Rose), Rod Reed, and Lester Reed (Treasa) all of Sidney and John Reed (Sandy) of Canada; two daughters, Patsy Mullins (Gene) of Sidney and Mary Runyon (Kevin) of Hatfield; two daughters-in-law, Beulah Reed of Pikeville and Della Reed of Sidney; 20 grandkids; 21 great- grandkids; two great-great -grandkids; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 7, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Blackburn and the Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church conducting services. Burial will follow in the Reed Cemetery, Sidney, with grandsons serving as pallbearers. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Orison Runyon

Orison Runyon, 90, of Brushy Rd, Varney, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Parkview Nursing Home.

He was born in Pike County, May 29, 1926, the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Leona Burgett Runyon.

He was employed by the gas company, served in the Navy and was a member of the Piso Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Lowe Runyon; one son, Orville Ray Runyon (Marena); and two brothers, Alfred Runyon and Lloyd Runyon.

He is survived by two sons, Avery Runyon (Linda) and Danny Runyon both of Varney; one sister, Virgie Ann; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept 5, in The Community Funeral Home Chapel with Darrin May, Bobby Mullins and Ken Runyon officiating. Burial followed in the Runyon/Maynard Cemetery at Piso. Arrangements were under the direction of The Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

Bonnie Jean Newsome Smith

Bonnie Jean Newsome Smith, 88, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born at Bypro, in Floyd County, July, 11, 1928, the daughter of the late Charlie and Verdie Little Newsome.

She was a retired school teacher for Pikeville Elementary School and a member of the Unity Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse B. Smith, Jr.; two brothers, Virgil Newsome and William Dewey Newsome; four sisters, Betty Browning, Nora Lawwill, Greta Jones and Linda Lou Newsome.

She is survived by two sons, Keith B. Smith and Timothy Smith; one daughter, Sharon Smith; two sisters, Joyce Johnson and Mary Leeker; two grandchildren, Matthew Aaron B. Smith, Megan LeAnn Smith Childress; four great-grandchildren, Oliver Childress, Destiny Fleming, Alexis Fleming, and Jonah Fleming; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home with Darrel Harmon, Mike Coleman, and Larry Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel, with special services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Zetta Ann Ratliff Stumbo

Zetta Ann (Ratliff) Stumbo of Hamilton, Ohio, died Sept. 3, 2016, at Hospice in Hamilton, Ohio.

Zetta was born in Elkhorn City and married to Del Stumbo in June 1961. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University where she obtained a Bachelor’s Education and later a Master’s in Education. She taught at Elkhorn City Elementary for two years before moving to Hamilton. She loved working with children as evidenced by her thirty year teaching career in Fairfield schools. She was a lifetime member of OEA and NEA. She was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church.

Zetta was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sally Huff Ratliff; husband; Del Stumbo; siblings, Ardena Ratliff, Reginald Ratliff, Vivian Pullin and Danny Ratliff.

She is survived by her sister, Peggy Gillespie; sister-in-law, Kay Ratliff; nephews, Charles W. Ratliff (Dorothy) and Duane Pullin both of Bean Station, Tenn. and Paul Ranee Pullin (Trish) of Lakeside, Ariz.; niece, Keana Karowski (Bill)of Chandler, Ariz.; as well as many great- nephews and nieces.

Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Zetta was a loved sister, aunt and friend.

Dr. John Thomas Trump

Dr. John Thomas Trump, 60, a resident of Lexington, beloved husband of Patty Gross Trump, died Sept. 3, 2016, due to injuries suffered in a small plane crash in Terre Haute, Ind.

Born and raised in Michigan, he was the eldest son of the late John Walter Trump and Anabel Crow Trump, currently of Carlisle, Ohio.

Dr. Trump was a graduate of Asbury College, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force and the Kentucky Army National Guard, retiring as a colonel in 2004. A skilled anesthesiologist, Dr. Trump was known by colleagues and patients for his calm demeanor and soothing bedside manner. He had a generous nature and was always eager to lend a helping hand to family, friends and strangers alike. An avid runner since high school, he continued to participate in races and running events until his death. Other members of the Todd’s Road Stumblers recall how he would slacken his pace to run alongside them.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Trump.

In addition to his wife and his mother, he will be greatly missed by his two children, Kevin Trump of Wilmore and Melinda Johnson (Blake) of Lexington; three stepchildren, Frederick “Chris” Augsburg of Lexington, Sandra Jansen (Paul) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jeffrey Davis of Lexington; a brother, Daniel Trump (Meg) of Miamisburg, Ohio; two sisters, Nina Trump of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Marjorie Toepler (Richard) of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Raeanne and Brianna Augsburg, and Jeffrey “Wade” Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, by Pastor Mark Sloss at Faith Lutheran Church, 1000 Tates Creek Rd., Lexington, Ky. 40502, where Dr. Trump was a dedicated member. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home of Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association and the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates.

Dr. Trump will also be greatly missed by the Gross Family, who loved him dearly and of whom he has been a beloved family member for almost 14 years.

John B. Williamson

John B. Williamson, 88, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born April 24, 1928, the son of the late John F. and Sallie Pearl Williamson.

He worked as a carman for Norfolk and Southern Railroad for 46 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Jammotton Williamson; his son, James Michael Williamson; and two brothers, William P. Williamson and Robert Alvan Williamson.

He is survived by his two sons, Beverly Bruce Williamson (Dolores)of Kimper and Gary Donald Williamson (Geneva)Cincinnati, Ohio; his siblings, Joe F. Williamson of Sharpsburg, Ga., Elizabeth Gurney of Linthecum Heights, Md., Lucille Bowling of Irvine and Ethel Day of Rockford, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 36 great- grandchildren; and 12 great-great- grandchildren; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy with grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral of Belfry.

Marcella Compton Huffman

Marcella Compton Huffman, 86, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Pikeville, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at Hospice of Palm Beach County.

She was born in Pike County, Nov. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late James Madison and Della Reynolds Compton.

She was retired from Bellsouth, where she worked for 30 years, and a member of the First Methodist Church of Ft. Pierce, Fla.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Goebel Huffman; two brothers; and four sisters.

She is survived by one son, William Goebel Huffman Jr.; one daughter, Victoria Huffman; one sister, Elizabeth Riddle; one grandchild; one step grandchild; and two step-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, in the Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Nick England officiating. Burial will follow in the Compton Cemetery at Collins. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
