Frederick “Fred” Dawson
Frederick “Fred” Dawson, 76, husband of 54 years to Barbara Gardner Dawson, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in South Shields, County Durham, England, Dec. 7, 1939, the son of the late Frederick and Sarah Jane Kidd Dawson.
Mr. Dawson attended Durham University and Sunderland College in England earning his Mine Manager Certification and Charter Engineership. In 1969, he immigrated to Alberta, Canada with his family. While working for McIntyre Porcupine Mining, he captained and trained mine rescue teams traveling to different states to participate in mine rescue competitions. From there his career led him to West Virginia, Oklahoma, and eventually Kentucky. In 1979 he and his family became naturalized American citizens. They lived in Prestonsburg, Floyd County, Ky. for 23 years operating coal operations for Zapata, Steven Lee Enterprises, Florida Power, Wheelwright Mining, Branham & Baker/Quaker Coal Company, then completed his career, starting and operating a mining complex in Russia. Upon retiring in 2000, he and his wife moved to Lexington to be closer to their UK graduate children and two grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James William Dawson.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Nicholas Dawson (Carmie) of Lexington; one daughter, Susanne Dawson, Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Andrew and Ethan Dawson both of Lexington; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Lily Mawson of South Shields, England.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, with Rev. George Love officiating.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are under the direction of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home of Lexington.
Bryan G. Deskins
Bryan G. Deskins, 57, of South Williamson, died suddenly, Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, in the emergency room, at the Tug Valley Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gary Robbins officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Tommy Howard
Pastor Tommy Howard, 68, widower of Margaret “Noey” Howard, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2016.
He was born in Pikeville, the son of the late James and Edith Howard.
He was the minister of Christ Centered Church, retired chaplain of the Lexington Police Dept. and the Fayette Co. Sheriff’s Dept., and was an Army veteran. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Howard (Deanna).
He is survived by two children, Andrea Cole (William) of Richmond and Shane Thomas Howard (Monica) of Newport; four grandchildren, James Allen Cole, Noah Cole, Aiden Howard and Mason Howard; and a brother, Noel Howard (Jean).
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Christ Centered Church. Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at Lexington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home of Lexington.
Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the church.

Marcella Compton Huffman
Marcella Compton Huffman, 87, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Pikeville, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at Hospice of Palm Beach County.
She was born in Pike County, Nov. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late James Madison and Della Reynolds Compton.
She was retired from Bellsouth, where she worked for 30 years, and a member of the First Methodist Church of Ft. Pierce, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Goebel Huffman; two brothers; and four sisters.
She is survived by one son, William Goebel Huffman Jr.; one daughter, Victoria Huffman; one sister, Elizabeth Riddle; one grandchild; one step grandchild; and two step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, in the Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Nick England officiating. Burial will follow in the Compton Cemetery at Collins. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Charles David “Charlie Horse” Kennedy
Charles David “Charlie Horse” Kennedy, 54, of Beech Creek, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center at Phelps.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, in the Beech Creek Church of Christ with Bro. J.D. Mahon and Bro. David Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grover Kennedy/Mahon Cemetery at Beech Creek. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Betty Ruth Ratliff
Betty Ruth Ratliff, 73, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at Rockcastle Regional Hospital.
She was born at Elkhorn City, June 9, 1943, the daughter of the late Rush and Marie Thacker Adams.
She was a homemaker and baptized in the Christian faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Junior Ratliff; one brother, John K. Adams; one sister, Ival Lee Steele; a brother-in-law, Loyd Ratliff; father-in-law, Tob Ratliff; and mother-in-law, Lessie Ratliff.
She is survived by two sons, Earl Gene Ratliff (Trinity) of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jack Fitzgerald Ratliff of Christian County; one daughter, Jackie Lynn Yates (Ron) of Elkhorn City; one sister, Edith Mae Cavins (Virg) of Portsmouth, Ohio; best friend, Geraldine Thacker; special niece, Patricia Martin; sister-in-law, Wilma Justice; seven grandchildren, Julia Epling (Caleb), Jodi Stiltner (D.J.), Amanda Belcher (Kevin), Christian Yates, Zachary Ratliff, Emily Ratliff and Sarah Ratliff; and five great-grandchildren, Trey Helmstetter, Jackson Keene, Carter Epling, Banjamin Stiltner and Jaden Belcher.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Dale Sanders and others officiating. Burial followed in the Ratliff Cemetery at Road Creek. Arrangements were under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.
Sarah Louise Ratliff
Sarah Louise Ratliff, 45, of Road Creek, Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with special services at 7, with Tommy England officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home.
Raymond S. Stewart
Raymond S. Stewart, 52, of Lick Branch of Marrowbone, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Defiance, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1964 in Defiance, Ohio, the son of Patricia Smith Stewart and the late Edwin Stewart.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Savannah Marie Stewart; and one sister, Ramona Spencer.
He is survived by one son, Joshua Raymond Stewart of Robinson Creek; one daughter, Miranda Leigh Stewart of Sycamore; his loving mother, Patricia Stewart of Lick Branch; one brother Terry Smith of N.Car.; two sisters, Lisa Coleman of Wolfpit and Rosetta Stewart of Elkhorn City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, September 2, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Hall and Billy Compton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, with a special service at 7.
Raymond will be sadly missed by who knew and loved him.
David M. Varney
David M. Varney, 74 of Toler, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at the Tug Valley Regional Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit.
He was born at Toler, Feb. 7, 1942, the son of the late Opie Reid and Edna Mae Cantrell Varney.
He was an accountant and had owned and operated Varney’s Tax Service at Belfry for several years. He was an active leader in his community, having been President of HOPE for many years, an avid Belfry Pirate and University of Kentucky fan and an active and longtime member of the Williamson Area Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Kaye Varney.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tina Jean May Varney of Toler; daughter, Christina Lynn Varney (Wayne) of Savannah, Ga.; son, Kevin Wayne Varney (Sheila) of Belfry; brother, Jerry Reid Varney (Gale) of Dansville, N.Y.; sister, Nancy Margaret Bryan of Dial’s Branch, Blackberry; grandchildren, Amber Marie Aaron Meeks (Matthew), Deana Jade Aaron Rowland (David), Candice Morgan Aaron English (Jarred), Reid Nicholas Varney and Ryan David Varney; great grandchildren, Hayden Aaron Meeks, Heath Ambos Meeks and Bradford Allen Rowland; and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Estep officiating. Burial followed in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under the direction of the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Mark Alton Wolford
Mark Alton Wolford, 52, of Freeburn, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Barrenshe Church of God with Pastor Bobby Dale Wolford and others officiating. Burial followed in the Mountain View Memory Gardens of Maher, W.Va. Arrangements were under the direction of the Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Lou Emma Chaffin
Lou Emma Chaffin, 90, of Pikeville, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at her residence.
Services are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the J. W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Brenda Joyce Lee
Brenda Joyce Lee, 60, of McCarr, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at the Tug Valley Regional Hospital in South Williamson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with services at 7.
Elster K. Hurley
Elster K. Hurley, 93, of Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 23, at his home, after a short illness.
He was born at Ashcamp, April, 14, 1923.
He was a member of the VFW (Patton Crosswhite) Post 6975 and served as Post Commander from 1988 to 1991, as well as being a 32 degree Mason, 33 degree Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He served in the U.S. Military for over 25 years and was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam campaigns. He was awarded the following medals, Legion OF Merit, European Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, National Defense (with Bronze Oak Leaf) (awarded 2 times) and other numerous accommodations, awards and medals. He retired from the military to settle in Bristol, Va. in 1969.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Vernie “Toots” Hurley of Jewell Ridge, Va.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Sue Hurley Cordle of Bristol, Tenn.; two sons, Ronnie E. Hurley (Sherril) of Bristol Tenn. and Gary M. Hurley (Marcy) of Greenville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild (on the way).
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Weaver Funeral Home.
The interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weaver Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Bristol, Tenn.
