Gloria Jean Pugh
Gloria Jean Pugh, 69, of Pikeville, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pikeville, Feb. 21, 1947.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pikeville.
Her journey began when she married
her best friend Larry Pugh, forty-six years ago on May 2, 1970.
She is survived by her loving husband, Larry Pugh; two sons, Chad E. Pugh (Susan) of Pikeville and Kevin W. Pugh (Tonya) of Pikeville; three sisters, Panzi Gumm of Somerset, Jackie Hamilton of Pikeville, and Pearl Looney of Winchester; one brother, Ervin Bartley of Pikeville; and three adoring grandchildren, Colby Pugh, London Pugh and Mason Pugh.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, in the Thacker Memorial Chapel with John Lucas officiating. Entombment followed in the Isaac Thacker Memorial Mausoleum in the Annie E. Young Cemetery of Chloe. Arrangements were under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and treasured her.
Mattie Lucille “Lucy” Roberts Stanley
Mattie Lucille (Lucy) Roberts Stanley, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at the V. A. Medical Center in Columbia, S.C., following a brief battle with cancer.
She was born at Burnwell, April 4, 1938, the oldest daughter of the late Earl and Ruth Patterson Roberts.
After graduating from Belfry High School, Lucy wanted to serve her country. She tried, unsuccessfully to join the U.S. Navy in 1958, but didn’t weigh enough to meet the weight requirement, plus she also needed to swim a mile and she wasn’t a good swimmer. In 1960, she tried again and was accepted into the Navy with rolls of quarters in her bra and floating, most of the mile, around the pool. Lucy was determined and persistent.
She was a retired licensed cosmetologist. She started working in 1968, with Edna Goins, at Edna’s Beauty Shop in Williamson, W.Va. When her boys were young, she worked from her home styling hair and doing nails. Later, moving to Florida in 1983, she continued to make women beautiful until she retired in October 2011 and moved to South Carolina.
Lucy dearly loved her family. Each year, the first week of July, she returned to her roots in the hills of Burnwell, Kentucky and spent time with her family and neighborhood friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Stanley of Williamson, W.Va.; one son, Kelly Dean Stanley; two brothers, Pierce and David Roberts; and three sisters, Annette Dugdale, Earnestine Larsen and Roxie Smith.
She is survived by her son, Loren Joe (Kara and her son Jim) of Harold; one grandson, Jonathan Dean Stanley of Dallas, Tex.; two brothers, Greg Roberts (Shelly) of Westland, Mich. and Travis Roberts (Patti) of Burnwell; three sisters, Judy Smith (Fred) of Gambrills, Md., Fredia Hunnicut (Arthur) of Garden City, Mich. and Pamela Kirk (Barry) Chapin, S. Car.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Roberts of Norwich, Conn.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the church. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Burnwell. Obituary courtesy of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

George Truman Williams
George Truman Williams, 85, of Kimper, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Pike County, Feb. 23, 1931, the son of the late General Merritt and Pearl Litteral Williams.
He was owner/operator of G.T Williams Trucking, he served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Meta Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Wesley Dean Williams; one daughter, Karen Lynn Williams; and three brothers, Willie Williams, Harry Williams and William Merritt, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Jeanette Starnes Williams; one son, George David Williams of Kimper; one daughter, Rhonda Craft (Donnie) of Kimper; a son-in-law, Harold Williams of Ft. Pierce, Fla., one brother, Dwight “Ike” Williams of Zebulon; three sisters, Lois Chapman Pennington of Pikeville, Anna Lenore Frutchey of London and Barbara Joyce Reed; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Meta Baptist Church with Bill Staggs officiating. Burial followed in the Williams Family Cemetery at Kimper. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Military Rites were performed by the Johns Creek D.A.V. Chapter 166.
Pallbearers were: Michael Coleman, Dustin Ratliff, Matthew Craft, Daniel Craft, Nathan Williams, Cameron Williams and Payton Murphy.
Bertha Christine Dotson
Bertha Christine Dotson, 77, of Stopover, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at her home.
Honoring services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Elk Creek Freewill Baptist Church at Stopover with Rev. Delbert Hurley. Burial will follow in the Dotson Family Cemetery at Stopover. Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc. of Matewan W.Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, with nightly services at 7 p.m.
Martha Marie Dotson Justice
Martha Marie Dotson Justice, 52, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at her residence.
A graveside memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.24, at the Dotson Family Cemetery of Left Fork Bones Branch Rd. at Phelps. Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Effie Little
Effie Mae Little, 85, of Weeksbury, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at her residence.
She was born in Pike County, Oct. 1, 1930, the daughter of the late Elder Bud and Tannie Mullins Johnson.
She was a retired cook at Pikeville Medical Center.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlit Little; one daughter, Brenda Carol Runyon; four brothers, Sill Johnson, Bill Johnson, Green Johnson and Dewey Johnson; one sister, Martha Johnson; and one grandchild, Andy Michael Bentley.
She is survived by one son, Arlit Eugene “Bud” Little (Teresa) of Weeksbury; three grandchildren, Stephanie Little, Colby Little and Tony Bentley; and two great-grandchildren, Hailey Little and Conner Little.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Buckingham Cemetery at Buckingham.
Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Church with services beginning at 7 p.m.
Victoria Dawahare Smith
Victoria Dawahare Smith, 55, of Nicholasville, formerly of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Chicago.
She was born in Pike County, Feb. 9, 1961, the daughter of the late Frank and Faye Goodman Dawahare.
She was employed as a processing clerk by the United States Postal Service and a member of the Bethel Harvest Church.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie Smith; one son, Brandon Smith; one daughter, Brianna Smith; two brothers, Frank Dawahare and Greg Dawahare; and two grandchildren, Layla Victoria Stratton and Christian James Stratton.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Justice and Teddy Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with special services at 7 p.m.
Martha Howard Burchett
Martha Howard Burchett, 46, of Ermine, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Memorial services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the King’s Chapel in Whitesburg with Frank Adams officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Dianna Gail Cassell
Dianna Gail Cassell, 70, of Huddy, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at the Tug Valley Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy with Ronnie Hensley officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Anna Ruth Gibson
Anna Ruth Gibson, 73, of Hellier, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born at Auxier, Oct. 7, 1942, the daughter of the late Boyd and Lillian Perry Pauley.
She was a teacher’s aide and a member of the Hellier Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Charles Gibson; one daughter, Christie Lynn Gibson; one brother, James Pauley; and two sisters, Judy Robinson and Alice “Bib” Childers.
She is survived by three sisters, Emma Freeman of Marshall, N. Car., Phyllis Dockery of Dallas, Ga. and Renie Maltese of Clinton Township, Mich.; and two brothers, Wade Pauley and Donald Pauley both of Hellier.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Greg Whitetree officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday with nightly services at 7.
Jeffery Keith Pugh
Jeffery Keith Pugh, 9, of Feds Creek, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Logan, W.Va., January 15, 2007, the son of Shaun and Rachel Cook Pugh.
He was a student.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Liza Cook; paternal great-grandmother, Edith Pugh; maternal great-grandmother, Della Blankenship; paternal great-grandparents, Everette and Helen Blankenship; and maternal great-grandparents, Arthur and Winford Cook.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, April Mahon and Della Cook, both of Feds Creek; paternal grandparents, Lynn and Janice Pugh of Feds Creek; and his maternal grandparents, Virgil (Reba) Cook of Chapmanville, W.Va.
A memorial service will be held from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.
