Herman Lucas
Herman Lucas, 77, of Big Shelby Creek Road, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at his residence.
He was born at Shelby Gap, Sept. 19, 1938, the son of the late Noah Sr. and Emma Damron Lucas.
He was a federal coal mine inspector, employed by Mine Safety & Health Administration, a member of Jenkins Masonic Lodge #856, served in the U.S. Army and a member of the Ashcamp Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Christa Gaye Lucas; five brothers, Challie Lucas Sr., Willard Lucas, James Lucas, John L. Lucas and George Lucas; and three sisters, Clarie Mansfield, Gladys Elkins and Violet Massey.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Bartley Lucas; one son, H. Michael Lucas; one daughter, Michelle L. Wright; three brothers, Noah “Dude” Lucas Jr., Jerry Lucas and Larry Lucas; two sisters, Ruby Elkins and Jessie Elkins; five grandchildren, Matthew Wright, Kelsey Batt, Michael P. Lucas, Sarah R. Lucas and Mackenzie H. Wright; and one great-grandchild, Austin Wright.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Barry Lucas, Robert Kelly Carson Wright and others officiating. Burial followed in the Lucas Family Cemetery, Big Shelby Creek Road. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Masonic Rites were performed at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, in the funeral home chapel.
Serving as pallbearers were: Matthew Wright, Michael P. Lucas, Stephen Batt and others.
Dixie S. Meade
Dixie S. Meade, 89, of Hurricane Rd., died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, July 31, 1927, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Compton Stephens.
She was employed by Shurtleff’s Laundry and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Coon Creek.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shearlie Meade; three brothers, Albert Jr., Raymond and John Lee Stephens; and one sister, Arvetta Edgars.
She is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Fuller (Randy); one grandchild, Ashley Fuller Ratliff (Evan); and two great-grandchildren, Bayleigh Fuller and Silas Ratliff.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.17, in the Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Primitive Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Danny C. “Red” Newsome
Danny C. Newsome, 66, of Booker Fork, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 5, 1949, the son of the late Corbet Newsome and Willis Rae Bowling.
He was a member of Pilgrim Prayer Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Lou Newsome.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jo Newsome; one son, Danny Michael Newsome of Douglas Parkway; one step-son, Kelly Anderson Bentley of Booker Fork; one daughter, Lora Tackett (Craig) of Little Robinson; four brothers, Donny Newsome of Glasgow, Ronnie Newsome of Myrtle Beach, S. Car., Randy Newsome (Robin) of Pikeville, Dewayne Newsome (Melinda) of Pikeville; four sisters, Sue Addington (Richard) of Fort Worth, Tex., Margie Johnson of Pikeville, Darlene Potter (Ricky) of Pikeville and Karen Newsome Damron of Pikeville; one grandchild, Christian Tackett of Georgetown; and a host of family, friends, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Pilgrim Prayer Old Regular Baptist Church with Daryl Newsom and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Cemetery at Booker Fork.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, services beginning at 7p.m. with Morgan Chapman, Adam Akers and Larry Kendrick officiating. Wednesday night services will be conducted by Daryl Newsom and others, beginning at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Geraldine Robinette
Geraldine Robinette, 86, of High Street, Virgie, died Sunday Aug. 14, 2016, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, June 20, 1930, the daughter of the late Tice and Beldora Tackett.
She was a retired nurse aide, employed by Pikeville Medical Center and Mountain Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kalton Robinette; Russell Tackett, Leonard Tackett, Mark Robinette, Kirby Tackett, Edna Day, Emma Jean Potter, and Lois Day.
She is survived by three sons, Danny Robinette, Ernie Robinette and Michael Robinette; two daughters, Jeanette Ward and Cheryl Compton; one sister-in-law, Doris Tackett; a special friend, Kay McPeek; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Ronnie Dean Adkins officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Serving as pallbearers were: Doug Robinette, Chad Robinette, Josh Robinette, Ronnie Adkins, Todd Compton, Jonathan Hopkins, Ernie Hopkins, Jim Osborne and Luke Adkins.

Dennie Stafford
Dennie Stafford, 79, of Dingess, W.Va., died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Pinson Fork Church of God at Belfry with Todd Claypool officiating. Burial followed in the Baisden Cemetery at Dingess, W. Va.. Arrangements were under the direction of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Mary Elizabeth Thacker
Mary Elizabeth Thacker, 70, of West Williamson, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in the Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Bro. Robert Hager officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Sue Ramey
Sue Ramey, 81, of Elkhorn City, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at Mt. View Healthcare Center.
She was born in Dunleary, Dec. 25, 1934, a son of the late Noah Nathaniel and Virgie Clevinger Ramey.
She was a librarian in the Pike County Library System and a member of the Ferrells Creek Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Ramey; one brother, Paul Ramey; and seven sisters, Edna Senters, Ellen Milem, Alma Kurtz, Orph Huddleston, Ruth Matney, Betty Belcher and Edith Ramey.
She is survived by her son, Don Ramey (Nicki) of Harrison, Tenn.; two sisters, Madge Johnson of Ashcamp and Joanne Hensley of Hamilton, Ohio; one brother, Mason Ramey of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Brandon Prince and Brent Grizzard; and four great-grandchildren, Aidan Prince, Madeline Prince, Keira Prince and Aria Grizzard.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the Elkhorn City Cemetery, Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Alberta Robinson
Alberta Robinson, 85, of New Franklin, Ohio, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Ell Robinson Cemetery, Greasy Creek.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Donna Corbin Casto
Donna Corbin Casto, 74, of Flemingsburg, passed away peacefully on Aug. 8, 2016, at Saint Joseph East Hospital in Lexington.
She was born in Pikeville, Feb. 4, 1942, a daughter of Lena Rivers “Bobbie” and the late Don Paul Corbin.
Lovingly called “Nonna”, she lived her life for her family, spending many years in the baseball stands cheering for her boys, enjoying the accomplishments of her three granddaughters, and fully supporting her aging mom. She relished her North Carolina visits, the family card games with her children and never lost hope of winning the lottery.
She is survived by two daughters, Kendra Kidby (Norman) and Stephanie Gregory (Dan); two sons, Bob Casto (Michelle) and Brian Casto (Mandy); four grandchildren, Zara Gregory, April Gregory, Scott Gregory and Anna Casto; three step-grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew and AJ; three step-great-grandchildren, Rio, Iris and Louie; her mother, Lena Corbin; three brothers, John Corbin (Sandy), Paul Corbin (Karla) and Mike Corbin (Jean); two sisters, Sharon Clark (Bill) and Helen “Cookie” Brinegar (Hiram); two cousins, Terry Thompson (Sandy) and Rick Thompson (Sharon); one niece, Lezlie Shivar; four nephews, John Corbin, Michael Corbin, Don Paul Corbin and Matthew Corbin; and many other family members.
A “Celebration of Life” for friends and family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at The Blue Raven Restaurant & Pub, 211 Main Street, Pikeville.

Sherwood Cool, 75, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 10, 1940, the son of the late William Corbitt and Thurla Belcher Cool.
He was a salesman, employed by Jackson Wholesale and a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Cool; and two sisters, Imal Maxine Hunt and Jeweline Cool.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Cochran Cool; step-mother, Bertha Cool of Belcher; one son, Ronald Kevin Cool of Pikeville; one brother, Gene Durward Cool of Greenup; three sisters, Kathleen C. Taylor of Flatwoods, Glima Elaine Hall of Ashland and Bea Cool Smith of Ashland; and one grandchild, Lauren Migun of Knoxville, Tenn.
Funeral services will be at held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Coal Run Church of Christ with Jerry Bliffen and Aaron Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the York Mausoleum, Johnson Memorial Park.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday, with services at 7 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
