Joyce Ann Elkins
Joyce Ann Elkins, 79, of Jenkins, died Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Letcher County, March 16, 1937, the daughter of the late Challie and Mary Elkins Lucas.
She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Elkins; two sons: Robert Anthony Elkins and Bobby Wayne Elkins; and one brother, Johnny Lucas.
She is survived by her daughter, Letha Bailey (George); one sister, Linda Brock; and four brothers: Challie Lucas Jr., Eugene Lucas, Jack Lucas and Willie Lucas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, in The Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Barry Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in the R.H. Ratliff Mausoleum
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday, with special services Friday night. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Herbert Stewart Hensley III
Herbert Stewart Hensley III, 49, of Pikeville, died Sunday, July 31, 2016.
He was born at South Williamson, on May 1, 1967, the son of the late Herbert Stewart and Estella Wallace Hensley.
He was a librarian for Main Street Church of Christ, Secondary Education for Pike County Board of Education and a member of Main Street Church of Christ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Ann Wampler.
He is survived by one brother, David Lee Hensley (Mary) of Majestic; three sisters, Elizabeth Carol Pinson (Eddie) of Pikeville, Linda Gail Estep (Jimmy) of Majestic and Marian Jo New of Richmond.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Main Street Church of Christ with Josh Allen officiating. A private burial will follow.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Alice Elizabeth Gibson Martin
Alice Elizabeth Gibson Martin, 89, of Garrett, died Friday, July 29, 2016, at Hazard.
She was born in Pike County, June 10, 1927, a daughter of the late Edwin Joseph and Irene Depew Gibson.
She was the former owner and operator of Martin’s 5 & 10 Cent Store, at Garrett.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Jennings Martin; one brother, William Edwin Gibson; and one sister, Sarah Gibson Click.
She is survived by one son, David “Bucky” Martin (Linda) of Langley; Two daughters, Suzanne Niedbalski (Alan James) of Niceville, Fla. and Sherri Reed (Gary) of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Kathryn, Nicholas, Adam, Joseph, Daniel, Samuel and William; and five great-grandchildren, Claire, Madeleine, Ann Ashby, Abraham and Harrison.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Garrett First Baptist Church with Randy Osborne officiating. Burial followed in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Phyllis Gail Addair Thornbury McCown
Phyllis Gail Addair Thornbury McCown, 89, of Prater Road, Hurley, Va., died Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at Heritage Hall, Grundy, Va.
She was born at Litwar, W.Va. on March 14, 1927, the daughter of the late James Franklin Addair and Thelma Mildred Fisher.
She was a homemaker and member of the Energyville Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest McCown; her first husband, James Thornbury; four brothers, three sisters, one step sister and three step brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Thornbury Prater (Ulvert); one brother, Johnny Addair; three sisters, Hilda Fuller, Rita Blankenship and Wanda Browning; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the Lucas & Son Chapel, services beginning at 7, with David Bentley officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Tate Cemetery, Bethel, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blackey Baptist Building Fund.
“Bootsie” Runyon
Retha Mae “Bootsie” Runyon, 67, of McCarr, died July 30, 2016, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, with Bro. Ed Lockard officiating. Burial followed in the Anderson Hatfield Cemetery, McCarr. Arrangements were under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

Jerry Ray Trimble
Jerry Ray Trimble, 78, of Ivel, died Sunday, July 31, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Pikeville, Sept. 2, 1937, the son of the late James and Ruby May Hopson Trimble.
He was a retired electrician in the coal mines.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Trimble and Jimmy Trimble.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Perkins Trimble; one son, Michael Ray Trimble of Ivel; two daughters, Jerri Jo Trimble of Ivel and Trina Sue Taylor of Allen; daughters, at heart, Jessica Johnson of Ivel and Amy Pelfrey of Prestonsburg; three sisters, Bonnie Holson of Ivel, Dinah Stratton of Glasgow and June Burchett of Ypsilanti, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Sabrina, Sara, Shawn, Justin, Kasey, Scott and Jordan; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, in the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Doug Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements were under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.

Aaron Wallace, 88, of Elkhorn City, died Friday, July 29, 2016.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at the Cedar Grove Old regular Baptist Church, Elkhorn City. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.

Helen Ward, 82, of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Virgie, died Friday, July 29, 2016.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Johnson Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Milford Chalmer Bentley
Milford Chalmer Bentley, age 70, of Elkhorn City, passed away at his residence Wednesday July 27, 2016. Milford was born September 15, 1945 to the late Milford and Girtie “Slone” Bentley in Pikeville.
Besides both of his parents, Milford is preceded in death by one brother, Billy Bentley. Milford is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Claudetta Bentley of Elkhorn City; two sons, Chalmer Edward Bentley of Youngston, Ohio and Trenton Bentley of Millard; seven grandchildren: Chalmer, Chaylee, Claudia, Cambrie, Amarissa, Alyssa, and Trenton; one brother, Denny Reed Bentley of Millard.
The family will accept friends Saturday, July 30, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. for a memorial service at the Glory Bound Freewill Baptist, located on Elkhorn Creek with DAV Honors conducted by Elkhorn City DAV Chapter # 140.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville, KY.
“Smiley” Hensley
Harold “Smiley” Hensley
Harold “Smiley” Hensley, 68, of Phyllis, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at his residence.
He was born in Letcher County, Oct. 17, 1947, the son of the late, John and Savannah Horne Hensley.
He was a member of the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ and was a retired coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Hensley and Everett Hensley; three sisters, Alpha Stiltner, Polly Lee and Edith Mounts.
He is survived by his loving wife, of 48 years, Rosa Lee Hensley; one brother, Joe Hensley of Cynthiana; and a host of nieces and nephews that he loved so much.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, August 1, at the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ with Church of Christ Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Abshire family Cemetery, Phyllis.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday, at the church, with nightly services beginning at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Derrick “Big Show” Cantrell Silas
Derrick “Big Show” Cantrell Silas, 34, of Georgia, died Sunday, July 24, 2016, in the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Dougherty County, Ga., April 2, 1982, a son of Wanda Silas.
He confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Camilla, Ga., under the leadership of Rev. Curnell Henry. He later moved his membership to Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Camilla, GA., under the leadership of Rev. Jermaine King.
He is a 2000 graduate of Mitchell Baker High School. He graduated from the University of Pikeville in 2005, where he was recruited to play on the school’s very first football team. While in Pikeville, he coined the name “Big Show.”
He was employed with Autry State Prison as a counselor.
On July 24, our father, Jesus Christ, said, “You have helped many people, you have mentored many of my children in Mitchell County and you have passed the test.” The Lord plucked a honeysuckle out of his garden and sent his angel, along with Big Mama, to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga. to bring the “Gentle Giant” to his eternal home, to take his rest.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Vera “Big Mama” Mae Silas; his great-grandmother, Sallie Mae Silas; and an uncle, Benjamin Silas.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one brother, Desmond Silas Sr. (Laticia) of Camilla, Ga.; one sister, Tyecha Silas of Camilla, Ga.; three nepsons, Desmond Jr., Tylik and Landis all of Camilla, Ga.; a best friend, Shaimika Jones of Atlanta; a Godmother, Claretha Williams; three Godsisters, Keaundra Jones and Utoria Jones of Camilla, Ga. and Kiwanja Sanders of Pelham, Ga.; eight aunties: Freddie Mae Knight, Julia King, Annie Doris Williams (Boyise), Shirley Johnson (Robert), Lizzie Pearl Williams (Cleveland) and Faye Silas all of Camilla, Ga., Lucile Adams of Metter, Ga., and Kaye Logan (Kenneth) of Fayetteville, N.C.; and a host of cousins, mentees and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, 6829 St. Mary’s Rd., Baconton, Ga., with Rev. Ananias Hopkins III-Pastor and Rev. Jermaine Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nathaniel Thomas and Son Home for Funerals, Pelham, Ga.
