Henry Hodge
Henry Hodge, 88, of Elkhorn City, died Friday, July 1, 2016, at his home.
He was born in Elkhorn City, Aug. 16, 1927, the son of the late Booker Hodge and Grace Bartley Stewart.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Allen Hodge; and one son, Harvey “June Bug” Hodge.
He is survived by four sons, Gary Hodge, Robert Hodge and Billy Joe Hodge, all of Elkhorn City and Michael Hodge of Columbus, Ohio; seven daughters, Barbara Adams, Carol Stalker, Rhonda Ratliff, Diana Ratliff, Tenna Swiney and Anita Hodge, all of Elkhorn City and Kathy Fleming of Hellier; one sister, Ruby Cavins of Haysi, Va.; 30 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 4, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Herman West and Terry Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Bartley Cemetery, Jacksons Branch, Elkhorn City. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Sidney Johnson
Sidney Davis Johnson, 90, of Taylorsville, died Monday, July 4, 2016, at Highlands Nursing & Rehab, Louisville.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 12, 1925, the son of the late Sidney Johnson and Julia Robinson Johnson.
He was an engineer at General Motors and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Palmerine Johnson and Donald Allen Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanor Coleman Johnson; one son, Ted Johnson (Ingeborg); one daughter, Sue Ward; one sister, Myrtle Ann Mullins; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Kermit Wright and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery, at the foot of Maggie and Fred Coleman. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Billy Johnson Jr.
Billy Eugene Johnson Jr., 57, of Rasnick Bottom, Elkhorn City, died Sunday, July 3, 2016, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, Sept. 14, 1958, the son of the late Billy Eugene Johnson Sr. and Madeline Sue Johnson.
He was a disabled coal miner formerly employed by Chisholm Coal Company and a member of the Elkhorn City United Methodist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Lynn Johnson; two daughters, Tina Lynn Johnson May (Robert) and Christy Eugena Johnson Toler (Erik); one brother, John David Johnson (Stephanie); and four grandchildren, Dalton Tyler Tackett, Anthony Wayne Tackett, John Ross Tackett and Noah Luke Toler.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, in the Elkhorn City United Methodist Church with Tommy Taulbee officiating. Burial will follow in the Peter Adkins Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Gene Kendrick
Gene Kendrick, 77, of Thompsons Station, Tenn., died Friday, July 1, 2016.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Graveside services will be conducted by Belfry DAV Chapter #141.
Judy Morgan
Judy Kay Morgan, 64, of Rockhouse, died Friday, July 1, 2016, at her home.
She was born in Pikeville, Jan. 4, 1952, the daughter of Christine Epling Little of Rockhouse and the late Petie Hylton.
She was a physical therapy assistant and was of the Full Gospel faith.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Wayne Morgan.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Jamie Morgan of Regina; and two grandchildren, Emily Morgan and Olivia Morgan.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Joey Sussan officiating. Entombment will follow in the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Shelley Murphy
Shelley Murphy, 80, of Phyllis, died Monday, July 4, 2016.
He was born in McAndrews, April 26, 1936, the son of the late James Harrison Murphy and Ora Varney Murphy.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 8, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Murphy Family Cemetery, Phyllis. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Lanella Pieratt
Lanella Jonas Stiff Pieratt, 85, of Bristol, Va., formerly of Elkhorn City, died Friday, July 1, 2016, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn.
She was born in Athens County, Ohio, March 13, 1931, the daughter of the late George W. Jonas and Alta Skinner Jonas.
She was branch manager of US Bank, formerly Citizens Bank, and a member of the Elkhorn City Church of Christ until 2002, then the West Hill Christian Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Pieratt; one son, Mark Stiff; and one brother, George Jonas.
She is survived by one son, Ron Stiff of Elkhorn City; one daughter, Mary Stiff Christian (Gary) of Radford, Va.; one brother, Ron Jonas of Centerville, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Karen Stiff Burgett of Versailles; four grandchildren, Brandon Stiff (Jennifer) and Brooke Ring (Nick), both of Lexington, Brian Christian of Richmond, Va., and Kevin Christian of Bristol, Tenn.; and four great-grandchildren, Carter Stiff, Kaitlyn Stiff, Jack Ring and Mark Ring, all of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 4, in the Elkhorn City Church of Christ with Jim Ed Belcher officiating. Burial followed in the Dow Brooks Cemetery, Draffin. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Carl Hamilton
Carl Denvard “Cob” Hamilton, 71, of Stopover, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville.
He was born February 15, 1945, a son of the late Ira and Jettie Adkins Hamilton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ira Gilmer Hamilton and Aaron Hamilton.
Cob was a retired coal miner, having worked for Chisolm Coal for 37 years, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also loved his dogs and taking care of them. Cob was a good husband, brother, uncle, and friend.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mounts Hamilton of Stopover; three brothers, Edgar “Denton” (Macie) Hamilton, James Hamilton and Ralph Hamilton all of Phelps; one sister, Shirley Jean Fields of Knoxville, Tenn., as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family to mourn his passing.
Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m., Friday, July 1, at the Jones and West Funeral Home, Phelps, with cremation to follow services.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones and West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Eldon Humphries
Eldon Keith Humphries, 69, of Pikeville, died Thursday, June 30, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born March 18, 1947, at Quinwood, W.Va., the son of the late C.P. and Roxie Mae Shafer Humphries.
He was retired from Community Trust Bank of Pikeville, and a member of Maranatha Bible Church for more than 35 years, where he also served as music director.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ferris Humphries.
He is survived by his wife, Daphene Runyon Humphries; a son, Jason L. (Andrea) Humphries of Pikeville; and three grandchildren, Cooper Humphries, Corbin Humphries and Cole Humphries.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 3, at J.W. Call Funeral Home, with Mike Hopson officiating. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Steve Ray, Steve Bush, Gary Adkins, Larry Blackburn, Ricky Meade, Harold Ray, Joseph Slone, Larry Fields, Paul Dennis Runyon, Clarence Runyon, Bryan White, Steve Humphries, Keith Lockhart, Joe Anderson and Michael Ray.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Ronald Vaughan
Ronald G. Vaughan, 78, of Phelps, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 30, 2016.
He lived his life loving and serving others, selflessly dedicating his time and energy to his beloved family and community.
He has been the devoted husband of Edna Ratliff Vaughan for 57 years and a wonderful daddy to his only daughter; Robin Fannin and father-in-law to her husband Greg Fannin. Ronnie’s grandchildren were his pride and joy. There’s no denying that his grandbabies were the people who he loved the most. He was the Papaw of two granddaughters, Erika Brooke Dotson and her husband Ryan and Chelsea Morgan Fannin and her boyfriend Zack Avina.
His great-grandbabies were his world: “Papaw’s Little Man” Kenton Ryan Dotson and “Papaw’s Little Lady” Kennadi Rylan Dotson.
He was also loved by a twin brother, Donald A. Vaughan and his wife Juanita; sister Karen (Al) Plank; and brothers Glen (Judy) Allison, Ernie (Murlena) Allison and the late Clay Allison. He was a proud brother-in-law to Edith Sturgeon, Phyllis Cook, Herstel Ratliff, Anna Rhea Ray and the late Eugene and Bobby Ratliff. He cherished his family including the many nieces and nephews who were dear to their Uncle Ronnie. He shared a special bond with his “boys” Timmy, Steven, Joey and the late Kevin Maynard.
Ronnie’s story began on December 13, 1937. He was the son of the late John Alfred and Gwendolyn Goble Vaughan and the biological son of the late Hurchell (Ethel) Allison. Ronnie grew up in Majestic and went on to graduate from Phelps High School. He spent time as a Boy Scout leader, a school teacher and a coalfield league baseball player. He worked many years in the coal industry where he retired from Chisholm Coal Company. Ronnie has served the community he loved in different roles. He was a certified EMT and touched the lives of many by working for years with the ambulance service. Ronnie was a founding member of the Phelps Volunteer Fire Department in 1960.
He was passionate about saving lives and spent countless hours training, educating and protecting others. Vaughan, Unit 802, performed the duties of chief for twelve of the 55 years he had been a member of the department. His legacy will continue in the hearts of the brotherhood of the P.V.F.D. and in the community that he helped to keep safe. He was a mentor to his firemen and close friend to his assistant chief Ballard Wolford. Ronnie also loved his Pastor Opie Harris and the Church of God in Jesus Name.
Service to honor his life will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, July 3, at the Church of God in Jesus Name in Phelps. Visitation at the church will be held on Saturday, July 2 beginning at 6 p.m. with special services at 7 p.m. Ministers Opie Harris, David Norman and Dennie Land will be conducting services.
Ronnie’s final resting place will be the Charles Cemetery, behind his church and overlooking the community he served. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Phelps Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements are under the care of the Jones and West Funeral Home, Phelps.
