Clinton Ruble, 58, of Dans Branch, Borderland, W.Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at his home.
Visitation is Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel, Toler. Graveside services will follow at the Hensley Cemetery, Maher, W.Va.
“Bob” Stewart Jr.
Robert “Bob” Stewart Jr., 61, of Draffin, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the Lick Creek Holiness Church. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Arthur Bill Akers
Arthur Bill Akers, 83, of Island Creek, Pikeville, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family, after courageously battling a long illness.
He was born in Pikeville, Dec. 27, 1931, the son of the late Fred Akers and Zettie Marie Phillips Akers.
He was a successful businessman who owned and operated many companies, including Hoopwood Mining. He was a member of the Island Creek Baptist Mission.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Compton Akers; one son, Billy Dean Akers (Joyce Ann) of Pikeville; two brothers, James R. Akers of Wyandotte, Mich., and Roger Dale Akers of Winchester; two grandchildren, Kevin Akers and Alesha Akers, both of Lexington; and one great-grandchild, Collin Serafini of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Levi Coleman and Fred Klatka officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Serving as pallbearers were Don Williamson, Rodney Branham, Clyde McCoin, Isaac Fletcher, James Goss and Jeff Perkins.
Loretta Clevinger
Loretta Faye Bartley Clevinger, 62, of Ashcamp, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at her home.
She was born in Grundy, Va., Dec. 30, 1953, the daughter of the late Herbert Lee Bartley and Annisteen Hylton Bartley.
She was a teacher, a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Clevinger; and two brothers, Russell Allen Bartley and Herbert Bartley Jr.
She is survived by one son, Lucas Jordan Ramsey of Ashcamp; two daughters, Lisa Michelle Jones of Ashcamp and Brittany Nicole Damron of Pikeville; two brothers, Roger Lee Bartley of Shelby Valley and Randall Wayne Bartley of Marrowbone; two sisters, Cathy Lovoynne Bartley of Pikeville and Lora Marie Brown of Tennessee; and two grandchildren, Makyla Ruth Jones and Hannah Faith Damron.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Edgar Sanders and Homer Lee Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the Bartley Cemetery, Dry Fork of Marrowbone. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Hannelore Compton
Hannelore Lena Theresa Compton, 71, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. Hannelore was born April 4, 1944, the daughter of the late Karl Heinrick Schmidt and Paula Marie Schmidt.
She was a retired sales clerk for JC Penney and a member of the Fords Branch Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, Hannelore was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Besides her husband, Tolby Compton Sr., Hannelore is survived by two sons, Tolby Compton Jr. (Angela) of Ransom and Terry Compton (Fatima) of Jackson, Tenn.; one daughter, Lynn Sumner (David) of Oklahoma City; one sister, Inge Runz of Lahnstein, Germany; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of loving family and friends.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Jimmy Newsome
Jimmy Newsome, 61, of Shelbiana, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, March 4, 1954, the son of the late Prentice Newsome Sr. and Flossie Newsome.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kermit Newsome; and three sisters, Vada Newsome, Ada Newsome and Thelma Newsome.
He is survived by his wife, Lakie Bevins Newsome; and three brothers, Robert Newsome (Rhonda) of Virgie, Prentice Newsome Jr. of Blue River and Arnold Newsome of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Kevin Bowling officiating. Burial will follow in the Dan Adkins Cemetery, Fords Branch. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Josephine Prater
Josephine Wallace Prater, 72, of Freeburn, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, in Freeburn.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 9, in the Faith Tabernacle Church, Freeburn, with burial following in the BuddyMounts Cemetery, Freeburn. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Rush Ratliff
Rush Randall Ratliff, 59, of Kimper, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center, after a lingering illness.
He was born Oct. 29, 1956, the son of the late Rush and Lillian May Ratliff.
Randall graduated from Johns Creek High School in 1976. Upon graduation, he began working for his brother, Donnie, at River Hurricane Coal until he became disabled in 1984. He was a huge Kentucky Wildcat fan and couldn’t wait for football and especially basketball season to begin each year. He loved spending time with his family and up until his illness he enjoyed tracing his family roots and spent many hours gathering the Ratliff and May genealogy. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donnie Canada and Odell Ratliff; one sister, Audrey Ratliff Stevens; and one niece, Dale Lyn Layne.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sharon Scalf Ratliff; one son, Bryan Randall Ratliff of Kimper; four sisters, Nell Coleman (Buster) and Phyllis Ratliff, both of Kimper, Doris Canada Layne of Michigan, Weaultha Ratliff TerDoest (Richard) of Hudson, Mich.; and one brother, Tracy Ratliff of Toledo, Ohio.
He is also survived by the sparkle in his eyes, that he loved with every beat of his heart, a very special great-nephew, Boden Canada, whom he always said was the grandchild he never had; 10 nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Pallbearers were Chris Canada, Roger Varney, Grayson Layne Jr., D. G. McCoy, Danny Scalf, Alvin Thornbury, Jason Justice and William Barrett Webb.

Brandon Ward
Brandon Eric Ward, 42 of Williamson, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Evelyn C. May
Evelyn C. May, age 86, of Elkhorn City, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at her home.
Evelyn was born in Pike County, Jan. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Grant Coleman and the late Emily Ratliff Coleman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie B. May.
She is survived by two daughters, Elrene “Elke” (A.J.) Davis of Irvine and Willa E. May of Elkhorn City; three grandchildren, J. Davis of Richmond, Leah (David) Seastedt of Louisville, and Evan (Danielle) Phillips of Carmel, Maine; and three great grandchildren, Evelyn and Elyse Seastedt of Louisville, and Maxwell Phillips of Carmel, Maine.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel in Elkhorn City, Jason Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Elkhorn City Cemetery.
Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Harold Bryant
Harold Jefferson Bryant, 84, of Steele, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Clintwood, Va., Sept. 17, 1931, the son of the late Harrison Bryant and Della Bryant.
He was a coal miner.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Steven Bryant; one brother, Jay; and three sisters, Dovie, Marie and Nomel.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Sue McCoy Bryant; two sons, Danny Bryant and Ernie Bryant; two brothers, Terry Bryant and Emory Bryant; six grandchildren, Nikki, Ivie, Ruthie, Jonathan, Steven and Brian; and one great-grandchild, Jared.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Frank Crum and Joe Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Bryant Cemetery, Steele. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday with special services at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Stella Norman
Stella Norman, 87, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 30, 1928, the daughter of the late Burl Skeens and Nona Sawyers Skeens.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Freedom Bible Church, Johns Creek.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Stella is survived by one daughter, Pauline Hayton; two grandchildren, Jennifer Hall and Lisa Stanley; three great grandchildren, Olivia Hall, Ella Stanley and Sarah Stanley; and a host of loving family and friends. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday Dec. 3, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Roger Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
