Ruth Saul
Ruth Esther Harris Saul, 79, of Matewan, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Matewan Church of God. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday.
Kenny Sexton
Kenny Sexton, 61, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Letcher County, Feb. 20, 1954, the son of the late Wade Sexton of Beefhide and the late Verna Dinah Lee Sexton.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Sexton; and one great-grandchild, Pacelee Faith Burchett.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Wanda Sexton; two daughters, Kendra Bogar (Fred) of Hardy and Tabitha Thompson (Thomas) of Virgie; four sisters, Shelia Sanders (Harold) of Ashcamp, Tammie Steffey (Jim) of Kingsport, Tenn., Brenda Kiss (John) of Beefhide and Diana Johnson (Justin) of Virgie; one grandchild, Kashandra Burchett (Dustin); and two great-grandchildren, Serenity Burchett and Remington Burchett.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Belcher, Jerry Damron and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Archie Hall Cemetery, Long Fork. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with nightly services at 7.
Bertha Tackett
Bertha Loretta Tackett, 89, of Osborne Fork of Indian Creek, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at the home of her daughter.
She was born in Pike County, March 17 1926, the daughter of the late Willie and Minda Tackett.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Hursel Tackett.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosemarie Sherman (Gary) of Indian Creek; two grandchildren, Brittany Leigh Onkst (A.O.) and Garrick Todd Sherman (Sara), both of Pikeville; and three great-grandchildren, Luke Sherman Onkst, Ian Aubrey Onkst and Mila Ann Sherman.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Tackett officiating. Burial followed in the C.E. Tackett Cemetery, Indian Creek. Arrangements were under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Billy Thacker
Billy Gene Thacker, 54, of Red Creek, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 23, 1961, the son of the late Russell Thacker and Maggie Norman Thacker.
He was disabled.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Cornelius Thacker.
He is survived by three sisters, Tina Adkins, Lois Adkins and Amy Jean Thacker.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“Smokey” Blankenship
Walter “Smokey” Blankenship, 92, of Pikeville, died Thursday, November 26, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born June 13, 1923, in Pikeville, the son of the late Alson and Laura McGuire Blankenship.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a former coal operator, former parks director, city manager and commissioner in the City of Pikeville, a former board member of Pikeville Medical Center and an emeritus member of the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret “Peggy” Blankenship; and a sister, Lois E. Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Burchert Blankenship; two sons, Hedland (Debbie) Blankenship, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Reynolds (Cindy) Hedland III, of Hallandale, Fla.; a brother, Vernon “Tracy” Blankenship, of Blandchester, Ohio; two grandchildren, Gretchen (Gary) Kriebel and Reynolds (Julie) Blankenship; and two great-grandchildren, Colin and Devin Kriebel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 28, at the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, with Kaminski Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Johnson Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to University of Pikeville, 214 Sycamore Street, Pikeville, KY 41501.
Arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Larry Daniels
Larry Joe Daniels, 37, of Pikeville, died Monday, November 23, 2015, at his residence.
Funeral servies will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, November 29, at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Roger Music and Steve Slone officiating. Burial will follow in the Daniels Cemetery at East Point.
Visitation will be Saturday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelzon Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Gilbert Garris
Gilbert A. Garris, 87, of Belfry, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born April 23, 1928, in Athens, Alabama, the son of the late Richard Alvin Garris and Nettie Howell. He found his way to Florida, then to Columbus, Ohio for many years and spent the last 12 years in Belfry, KY. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dave Garris and three sisters, Rebecca Graham, Gayle (Bill) Ison and Jeanette (David) Ridenour.
He retired as an electrical journey wireman with I.B.E.W. local union 756 out of Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was a 56 year member. Gil was a dedicated Christian man and member of the First Baptist Church of Belfry. He loved the Lord, his wife and family but had a sweet spot for his only grandson, Nathan. We will miss him very much.
Survivors include his wife, Patty Garris of Belfry; daughter, Kris (Mark) Helton and grandson, Nate Helton of Belfry; sister, Betty Johnson of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; brother, Henry (Carolyn) Garris of Ormond Beach, Fla. and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, November 30, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of Belfry with Pastor Mark Helton officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, with men of the church serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Church.

Judy Gilliam
Judy Kay Gilliam, 62, of Jenkins, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at the Union Old Regular Baptist Church, Jonancy, with Brother Barry Lucas, Brother Ben Little, Brother Danny Belcher and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Sowards Cemetery, Lick Fork Section, Dorton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Baker Funeral Home, Pound, Va.
Larry Goodson
Larry Douglas Goodson, 77, of Ky. 805, Dorton, died Friday, November 27, 2015, at his residence.
He was born June 22, 1938, in Pike County, the son of the late Victor and Nellie Fleming Goodson.
He worked as a coal miner and in maintenance and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Lynn Goodson; and a brother, Gary Goodson.
He is survived by his wife, Randy Chaffins Goodson; a son, Jeff (Teresa) Goodson; two daughters, Linda (Eddie) Gilley, and Sherry (Randall) Mullins; two brothers, Jerry Goodson and Donald Goodson; and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, November 30, at Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville, with George Bellamy officiating.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home, with special services at 7 p.m., Sunday.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home.
Connie Ratliff
Connie Lee Ratliff, 67, of Elkhorn City, died Thursday, November 26, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born November 28, 1947, in Erwin Tenn., the daughter of Clifton Vanover Sr., of Belcher, and the late Ella Mae Renfro Vanover.
She was a teacher with the Pike County Board of Education.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa McDaniel; a brother-in-law, Scott Hawkins; and a nephew, Eric Hatfield.
She is survived by her husband, Leland Dencil Ratliff, of Elkhorn City; a son, Jason Adams of Elkhorn City; a daughter, Malena Ratliff (Johnny) Sanders of Elkhorn City; two sisters, Patricia (Mike) Doughty of Bluefield, Va., and Cindi Hawkins of Elkhorn City; two brothers, Clifton Vanover Jr. of Elkhorn City, and Philip (Barb) Vanover of Ashcamp; a grandchild, Kayleigh Jones of Elkhorn City; a great-grandchild, Brycen; six nieces and nephews, Clinton Doughty, Beth (Barry) Carbaugh, Chris (Christie) Doughty, Jessica (Kermit) Howell, Crystal (Kris) Dils and Jonathan Vanover; and 10 great-neices and nephews, AutumnFire, Adam, Austin, Elijah, Cameron, Kaitlyn, Mackie, Allie, Joey and Jeremy.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 29, at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City, with Jason Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dow Brooks Cemetery, Draffin.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.
