Vernon Smith
Vernon Estil Smith, age 78, of Ivy Fork, Pikeville, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at his residence.
Vernon was born August 23, 1937, to the late Fred and Gracie “Keene” Smith in Pikeville.
Besides both of his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by one daughter, Cristine King and one brother, Preston Smith.
Vernon is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis “McCoy” Smith; three sons, Vernon (Michelle) Smith Jr. of Island Creek, Freddie Smith of Upper Chloe, and Jimmy Parsons of Pikeville; three daughters, Pamela Jo Smith of Ivy Fork, Kellie (Greg) Kennard and Ruth (Kermit) Williams, both of Cowpen; one son-in-law, Ricky King; five sisters, Katherine Miracle, Estell Marshall, Augustine McPeek, Helena Marshall, and Orlena Gross; one brother, Bert Smith; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Vernon was a treasured individual and will be so greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Thacker Memorial Funeral Home, with burial following at Annie E. Young Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Thacker Memorial Funeral Home in Pikeville.
Wanda Trafelet
Wanda Ann Stapleton Trafelet, 39, of Robinson Creek, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born March 22, 1976, in Pikeville, to Mary Ann Collins Hunter of Island Creek and the late Roy Stapleton.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Dale Trafelet; and a son, Ronald Dale Trafelet Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Austin Roy Trafelet and Anthony Michael Trafelet, both of Robinson Creek; a daughter, Ashley LeAnn Hall Trafelet of Harold; a stepson, Christopher Scott Trafelet Sword of Pikeville; three brothers, Roy Stapelton, Lester Stapleton and Jeffrey Stapelton, all of Pikeville; five sisters, Emmy Meadows of Millard, Billie Turner of Loretta, Tenn., Connie Newsome of Virgie, Carolyn Stapleton of South Williamson, and Janet Everage of Virgie; one grandson, Bentley Jace Keathley; three step-grandchildren, Chloe Layne Sword, Logan Andrew Sword and Timothy Aiden Sword.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, November 29, at the Full Gospel Christian Fellowship Church at Hurricane Creek with Keith Collins and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Family Cemetery at Hurricane Creek.
Visitation will be at the church Saturday, with services at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Evelyn Blankenship
Evelyn W. Blankenship, 76, of Stopover, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Stopover, Nov. 1, 1939, the daughter of the late J.C. and Olga Sansom Wolford.
Evelyn was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith. She was a game show enthusiast, an excellent cook and loved working on crafts.
Evelyn was all about family and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Blankenship; one son, Mack Jr. “Mackey” Blankenship; five brothers, Sonny Wolford, Gene Wolford, Jackie Wolford, Roscoe Wolford and Carl “Bud” Wolford; and two sisters, Mildred Hurley and Betty Daniels.
She is survived by one son, Donald Gene Blankenship (Marie) of Stopover; one brother, Pete Wolford of Majestic; two sisters, Geneva Cochran of Stopover and Connie Blankenship of Michigan; four grandchildren, Justin Blankenship (Stacy) of Stopover, Hunter Blankenship, Laykyn Blankenship and Kyra Blankenship, all of Dandridge, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Keaton Blankenship and Isabella Blankenship, both of Stopover; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends to mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, in the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kelley Baldridge officiating. Burial will follow in the Hurley-Wolford Cemetery, Stopover, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.
There was no visitation on Thursday, so that family and friends could spend time with their loved ones on Thanksgiving.
Michael Derry
Michael Derry, 61, of Elkhorn City, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 5, 1954, the son of the late James Edward Derry and Dolly Childers Derry.
He was a vocational school teacher and a member of the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Scotty Derry.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Reese Derry; two daughters, Crissy Sexton and Misty McCarroll; and four grandchildren, Reece, Elliott, Liam and Landon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Roger Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the W.H. Coleman Cemetery, Wolfpit. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Dorlois Good
Dorlois Mae Bevins Good, 82, of Phyllis, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Dec. 27, 1932, the daughter of the late Troy and Elizabeth Kendrick Bevins.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Blake Good; and one brother, David Bevins.
Dorlois is survived by her son, John Scott Good (Kathy) of Arizona; one sister, Shirley Grizzle (James) of Grapevine; one brother, Don Bevins (Reable) of Lick Creek; two grandchildren, John Michael Good and Craig Good (Laura); one great-grandchild, Alyssa Good; one sister-in-law, Brenda Bevins; three nieces, Robyn Akers, Rhonda Burks and Beverly Bevins; four nephews, Keith Bevins, Greg Grizzle, Robert Bevins and James Troy Bevins; a special friend, Willie York; and a special friend and caregiver, Trish Spurlock.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Kathy Cantrell officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“Jimmy” Hunt II
James “Jimmy” Carroll Hunt II, 51, of Belfry, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at the Tug Valley Appalachian Regional Medical Center, South Williamson.
He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Dec. 28, 1963, the son of James “Big Jim” Carroll Hunt Sr. of Belfry and the late Elizabeth Reed Hunt.
He was a teacher at Belfry High School.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his dear uncle, John Fred Hunt; and his grandparents, Carroll and Mary Helen Hunt and Woodrow Reed.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one son, Nicholas James Carroll Hunt of Highland Heights; his grandmother, America Scott Reed of Lexington; three aunts, Gayle Hunt of Belfry, Phyllis Hill of Naples, Fla., and Sadie Chapman; special cousins, John “Little John” Hunt and Lorraine Smith, both of Belfry, and Djuna Alderuccio of Naples; and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Williamson, W.Va., with Fr. Thomas Nerivelikunnel Chacko and Father Terrence Hoppenjans officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with special services at 6.
Serving as pallbearers are James Hunt, Nicholas Hunt, John Hunt II, Calib Ball, Cary Tufts, Mitch Justice, Johnny Fields, Paul “Sarge” Workman and Darrell Mounts.
Barbara Kendrick
Barbara Jean Kendrick, 83, of East Shelbiana Road, Shelbiana, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born August 3, 1932, in Pike County, the daughter of the late Ballard and Roxie Goff Justice.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Danny Kendrick; a brother, Kenneth Justice; and a sister, Rita Justice.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three sons, Donald Kendrick, Jessie Kendrick and Harold Kendrick; three daughters, Teresa Kendrick, Pamela Adkins and Linda Bentley; four brothers, Ballard Junior Justice, Claude Justice, Doug Justice and Foster Justice; five sisters, Frances Charles, Patty Collins, Lena Newsome, Ruth Justice and Odell Justice; and nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday, November 28, at Lucas and Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the R.H. Ratliff Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville.
Johnny Ratliff
Johnny D. Ratliff, 62, of Rutledge, Tenn., formerly of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City.
Jeannine Thompson
Jeannine Howell Thompson, 69, of Twin Oaks, Pikeville, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at her home.
She was born in West Virginia, June 11, 1946, the daughter of the late Percy and Josephine Helvey Howell.
She was employed by the Kentucky State Department of Human Resources and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Howell.
She is survived by her husband, Denver Thompson; one daughter, Heather Leigh Thompson of Pikeville; and two sisters, Alice Little (Glenn) of Virgie and Nancy Bogardus of Frankfort.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel, with Tim Swanston officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Pallbearers were Nathan Kimberlain, Allen Blackburn, Stephen Walters, David Francisco, Justin Rose and Jim Kinny.
