Helen Varney
Helen Marie Varney, 63, of Grapevine, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Buchanan County, Va., May 25, 1952, the daughter of the late Ballard Estep and Josie Hayes Estep.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy Estep and Harrison Hayes Estep.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Varney; two daughters, Vivian Chaney and Shelia Barton; two sisters, Vernie “Tootsie” Robinson and Bobbie Anderson; and three grandchildren, Denise Miller, Lasha Chaney and Cody Barton.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 27, in the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ with Dewayne Abshire and Jim Abshire officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“Marci” Warren
Gaythel Marcella “Marci” Warren, 81, Ponte Vedra, Fla., and formerly of the Williamson area, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, in Thomson, Ga.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will follow in the Monty L. Bevins Cemetery, Sidney. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Rebie Adkins
Rebie Adkins, 89, of Rockhouse, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born at Rockhouse, May 17, 1926, the daughter of the late Arthur Coleman and Mary Hall Coleman.
She was a homemaker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie Adkins; one son, Clinard Coleman; three brothers, Blake Coleman, Elmer Coleman and Kermit Coleman; and two sisters, Magdaline Phipps and Ollie Harmon.
She is survived by two sons, Howard Clinton Adkins of Akron, Ohio, and Ronald Blake Adkins of Rockhouse; two brothers, Clifford Coleman of Mooresburg, Tenn., and Carl Coleman of Rockhouse; three sisters, Geraldine Phipps and Laverne Coleman, both of Rockhouse and Lois Damron of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Mary Lou Green, Robert Adkins and Clinard “Bubby” Adkins; and six great-grandchildren, Coty Ratliff, Austin Green, Hannah Thacker, Emily Adkins, Abby Adkins and Isaiah Adkins.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the Rockhouse Old Regular Baptist Church with Bradford Adkins and others officiating. Burial followed in the Arthur and Mary Coleman Cemetery, Rockhouse. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Kay Chafin
Kay Carol Chafin, 79, of South Williamson, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at the Tug Valley Appalachian Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Carolyn Childers
Carolyn Childers, 79, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pikeville, Sept. 30, 1936, the daughter of the late Lloyd Hurston Childers and Mary Louise Morris Childers.
She was a businesswoman, a realtor and travel agent, a member of the DAR, the Jolly Bunch (First Baptist Church) and the Republican Party. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pikeville.
She is survived by one brother, Lloyd “Butch” Childers Jr. (Jeannie) of Pikeville; and one nephew, Chad Childers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Keith Blackburn and Larry Keene officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Justice, Robert Ramsey, Joe B. Ramsey II, Ray Childers, Kenny Childers and Randy Roberts.
John Hall
John Hall, 67, of Dorton Creek, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington.
He was born in Dorton, Aug. 12, 1948, the son of the late Hassel and Hazel Ray Hall.
John was a retired mechanic, a member of the Dorton Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Shelby Creek Rescue Squad and a member of the Dorton Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronnie “Little Red” Hall, Harold Dean Hall, Doris Hall; and one sister, Georgia Bell Ball.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Brown Hall; one son, Rodney Smallwood (Debbie) of Dorton; three daughters, Sheila Darlene Costanzo (John) of Hernando, Fla., Arlene Kendrick (Steve) of Lexington and Charlene Smallwood of Dorton; one brother, Henry Hall (Pat) of Fayetteville, Ga.; two sisters, Linda Mullins (Bobby) of Jenkins and Aileen Anderson (Doug) of Stockbridge, Ga.; six grandchildren, Donavon Smith, Jacob Smallwood, Elizabeth Dekle (Cason), Samantha Smallwood, Olivia Lloyd (Casey) and Victoria Tabor; many nieces, nephews, friends; and his four-legged sidekick, Rusty.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the Dorton Old Regular Baptist Church with Robert Osborne, Mike Justice and others officiating. Burial followed in the Hall & Smallwood Family Cemetery, Dorton Creek. Arrangements were under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Lula Huddle
Lula Pearl Huddle, 90, of Newtown, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, Nov. 21, at the home of her daughter, Barbara Chafin (Roby), whom she made her home with the last three years.
Lula was born at Blacky, Va., Feb. 21, 1925, the daughter of the late Scott Hiram and Lula Violet Aldridge Smith.
Lula had been a Christian since 1954. Lula’s life of love for her family, her church and all her friends will always remain a precious memory to all who held her close. Lula belonged to the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church, Ransom.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Huddle Sr.; one daughter-in-law, Judy Kay Huddle; and two grandchildren.
Lula leaves behind to honor her loving memory and morn her passing, her children, William Huddle (Connie) of McCarr, John Huddle (fiancee Rose Thomas) of McCarr, Belvin Huddle (Brenda) of Hardy, Brenda Blankenship (Pastor Terry) of Lenore, W.Va., Lloyd Huddle (Flossie) of Belfry, Reta Stafford (William) of Kings Bay, Ga., Barbara Chafin (Roby) of Newtown, W.Va., Bryan Huddle (Kelly) of Chapmanville, W.Va., and special grandson she helped raise, David Huddle (caregiver, Cindy Hatfield) of Salt Rock, W.Va., and special caregiver, Beth Hatfield of Newtown, W.Va.
Lula had 22 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Vickie Hatfield for all the love and concern she showed to our mom.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, with special services at 7 p.m. with Bro. Roger Bogar. She will be taken to the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and her funeral will begin at noon with Pastor Larry Hubbard and Pastor Terry Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinson Cemetery, Buskirk, with Pastor Mike Smith conducting graveside services. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Pallbearers will be David Huddle, Payton Huddle, Eddie Huddle, Roby Chafin, Robert Andrew Chafin, Darrell Justice and Sam Harmon.
Julius James
Julius James, 40, of Penny Street, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, April 25, 1975, the son of Lisa Duchnowski (John) of Phyllis and the late Julius James.
He was self-employed.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Dakota Dwight William James.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Little James; one son, Malachi Ryder James of the home; two daughters, Nayla Lynn Renee James and Willow Rayne James, both of the home; his stepfather, John Duchnowski of Phyllis; one brother, Jessie Neil James (Amber) of Pikeville; and one sister, Julia Ann Ray (Greg) of Lower Johns Creek.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Jeff Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in the James Family Cemetery, Lower Johns Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Ben Lester
Ben Lester, 41, of Pikeville, died Friday, Nov. 20, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, in surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
He was born in Pikeville, Feb. 18, 1974, the son of Ralph and Joan Thorpe Lester of Jamboree.
Ben was a 1992 graduate of Phelps High School and obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Morehead State University. He was employed by the Pike County Board of Education as a teacher at the Phelps Day Treatment Center.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lancle and Gladys Lester; his maternal
grandparents, Burlen and Sadie Thorpe; and his father-in-law, Bob Howard.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Jenny Howard Lester; his precious daughter, Grace Addison Lester of the home; his brother, Patrick Lester (Angie) of Kimper; his mother-in-law, Evalee Howard of Salyersville; two sisters-in-law, Sherry (Patrick (Louis) and Tina Howard Ousley, both of Salyersville; one brother-in-law, Robbie Howard (Shelly) of Salyersville; three nieces, Kensi Lester, Jill Howard and Megan Patrick; one nephew, Christopher Ousley; his best friend and “brother, ” Howard Mahon; and a host of other family and friends.
Services honoring Ben’s life were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Josephine Stewart
Josephine Damron Stewart, 85, of Little Robinson Creek, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Feb. 15, 1930, the daughter of the late Richard Damron and Rebecca Adkins Damron.
She formerly a dietary supervisor at Pikeville Medical Center and was of the Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clancy Stewart; one son, Jimmy Stewart; six brothers; and four sisters.
She is survived by two daughter, Bonnie Roberts (Chester) and Teresa Reynolds (Ronald); one brother, Clifford Damron (Molly); one sister, Bertha Newsome; four grandchildren, Valerie Fielding (Robert), Marty Roberts, Ronda Taylor (James) and Matthew Reynolds; and two great-grandchildren, Isaac Fielding and Joseph Fielding.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Amos Newsom Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday with special services at 7.
