Carrell Belcher
Carrell Dean Belcher, 78, of Elkhorn City, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Elkhorn City, July 12, 1937, the son of the late Himan Belcher and Lenore Potter Belcher Adkins.
He was a retired teacher, formerly teaching in Pike County, Ky., and McDowell County, W.Va. He was a member of the Elkhorn City Heritage Council and the Elkhorn City Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jo Slone Belcher of Elkhorn City; one son, Tim Belcher of Elkhorn City; one brother, Bobby Belcher of Elkhorn City; two aunts, Olive Ward and Pebble Potter; and three grandchildren, Kori Michelle Belcher, Kala Lynn Belcher Newsome and Tymee Jo Belcher.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 5, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Ed Belcher, Steve Taylor and Fred Klatka officiating. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery, Elkhorn City. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Bruce Brown
Bruce Brown, 78, of Raccoon, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Prestonsburg Health Care.
He was born in Pike County, June 9, 1937, the son of the late Charlie Brown and Mary Charles Brown.
He was retired as the librarian at Pikeville College.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie Jr. “J.R.” Brown, Joel “Hunk” Brown, Robert “Bob” Brown and Burton “Sollie” Brown; three sisters, Christine Goff (Herbert), Easter Lucielle “Little Easter” Brown and Magaline Brown.
He is survived by one sister, Lanita Jean Hobbs of Tazewell, Va.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Community /Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Denk and Tanner Shomm officiating. Burial followed in the Brown Family Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Raccoon.
Don Coleman
Don H. Coleman, 85, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Pike County, April 10, 1930, a son of the late Sid and Beatrice Coleman.
Don was retired from Republic Steel Coal. He was a deacon and member of Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Thomas C. Cecil Masonic Lodge.
Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patty June Coleman; and one brother, Harold Coleman.
He is survived by his sister, Brenda (Gary) Collins of Louisville; one son, Jerry A. (Linda) Coleman of Marrowbone; two granddaughters, Danielle (Mark) Reed of Pikeville and Megan (Jeff) Settles of Lexington; two great-grandsons, Brayden Mark Reed and Grayson Daniel Reed; and a host of loving family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church. Church services will be Saturday at 7 p.m.
The funeral will be Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church with Randy Bentley officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Masonic services will be conducted by Thomas C. Cecil Lodge, #375 F&AM, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
James Holbrooks
James Curtis Holbrooks, 59, of Elkhorn City, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 5, 1956, the son of Opal Sexton Holbrooks and the late Walter Holbrooks.
He was a retired coal miner.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Holbrooks; and one sister, Sissy Holbrooks.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Edith Thacker Holbrooks; two sons, James Holbrooks and Joshua Holbrooks; three daughters, Heather Ladawn Ratliff, Megan Devon Holbrooks and Claudia Thacker Perkins; six brothers, Malcolm Holbrooks, Ronnie Holbrooks, Eddie Holbrooks, John Holbrooks, Julian Holbrooks and Cleve Holbrooks; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Delon Jones and Terry Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Holbrooks Cemetery, Elkhorn City. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Elmo Miracle
Elmo Miracle, 77, of Indian Creek, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at his home.

Harry Stewart
Harry Stewart, 65, of River Rouge, Mich., formerly of Floyd County, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, in Michigan.
He was born Feb. 1, 1950, the son of the late William Marvin and Hannah Newsome Stewart.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Matthew Stewart; and one brother, Billy Joe Stewart.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Stewart; one son, Michael Stewart of River Rouge; two brothers, Ronald Stewart and Randall “Trip” Stewart, both of Hi Hat; two sisters, Wanda Calhoun and Patricia “Trish” Foley, both of Prestonsburg; one grandchild, Heather Irick; and two great-grandchildren, Warren Matthew Stewart and Olivia Grace Durham.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Glen Hayes officiating. Burial followed in the Smallwood Cemetery, Dorton. Arrangements were under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Mary James
Mary Ann James, 84, of Cordele, Ga., formerly of Pike County, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016.

Paul Varney
Paul William Varney, 71, of Pikeville, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born April 27, 1944 at Ransom, to the late Rudolph and Thelma Hager Varney.
He is also preceded in death by two brothers; Paris Rufus Varney and Engling Varney.
He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A., a veteran of the U. S. Army and Moderator of Samaria Primitive Church and Long Fork Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sons, Paul William (Ummi) Varney Jr., of Plano, Texas, Ronald Bruce (Drucilla Ann) Varney of Fairmont, Ind., Mitchell Kevin (Brenda J.) Varney of Lexington, and Michael Keith Varney of Huntington, Ind.; two brothers, Rudolph (Helen Varney) Varney Jr., of Elkhorn City, and Bobby Leon (Diana) Varney of Huntington, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Paul William Varney III and Mia Elizabeth Varney; and a host of loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday Jan. 30, at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Mike Smith, Shawn Dotson and Jeff Dotson officiating. Burial will follow at Varney Cemetery, Kimper, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Belfry Chapter #141 Disabled American Veterans will conduct military graveside services.

Ed Anderson
Edgar Lee Anderson, 90, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center, Hazard.
He was born in Pikeville, July 14, 1925, the son of the late Lawrence Herbert Anderson and Sadie Jane Little Anderson.
He was owner/operator of Anderson’s Department Store, a former member of the Lions Club and past president of the Pikeville Merchants Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a German prisoner of war during World War II, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Raney Anderson, who died Nov. 13, 1984; one son, Lee Jeffry Anderson; two brothers, Herb Anderson Jr. and Orin M. Anderson; and three sisters, Ruth Shannon, Lois Deskins and Iris Havens.
He is survived by one daughter, Harriet Jane Blanton of Pikeville; one brother, Reed D. Anderson of Pikeville; four grandchildren, Nicholas Anderson, Joseph Anderson (Patricia) and Thomas Blanton, all of Lexington, and Tyler Blanton of Pikeville; three great-grandchildren, Luke Anderson, Connor Blanton and Carly Blanton; and his special caregiver, Laura Mullins of Pikeville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville with the Rev. Bill Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Military services will be conducted by Johns Creek DAV Chapter #166.
Pallbearers will be Nicholas Anderson, Joseph Anderson, Thomas Blanton, Tyler Blanton, Nathan Anderson and Jeff Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Baird III, H.L. Rogers, Reed Anderson, Fred Mullins, Russell McIntosh and Bill Deskins.
Ruby Bishop
Ruby Damron Bishop, 88, of Pikeville, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
She was born in Pikeville, May 16, 1927, the daughter of the late William Damron and Fannie Roberts Damron.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie James Bishop; one son, Glen Bishop Jr., who died in 1999; six brothers, Earl Damron, Arthur Damron, William Damron Jr., Ben Damron, Adam Damron and Gerome Damron; and two sisters, Marie Williams and Virginia Walters.
She is survived by two sons, James E. Bishop and Perry Bishop (Terry), both of Pikeville; two daughters, Marie Smith and Phyllis Adkins, both of Pikeville; five grandchildren, Kasey Paschall, Nicky Bishop, Terry M. Bishop, Brianne Lee Bishop and Taylor Scott Bishop; two step grandchildren, Jonathan Scott and Brandy Meek; three great-grandchildren, Katey Paschall, Kayla Paschall and Abby Yuhas; and three step great-grandchildren, Austin Collins, Cody Smith and Zack Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Levi Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
