“Lena Belle” Blackburn
Eleanor Belle “Lena Belle” Blackburn peacefully passed from this life Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at her home at Stanville.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920, to Columbus Franklin (“Lum”) and Nola Mae Wright Blackburn.
She was the wife of Otis Blackburn who preceded her in death July 9, 1984. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Fred N. Blackburn and Phillip James Blackburn; and one sister, Creda Chaney.
Eight children survive her: Carol Faye Blackburn of Harold, Otis Michael Blackburn and Curt Dwight Blackburn, both of Stanville, Don Franklin Blackburn (Melissa) of Lexington, Randall L. Blackburn, Gerald Keith Blackburn (Monie Sue) and Tim Wesley Blackburn, all of Stanville, and Lita Kim Blackburn of Harold. She is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Justice of Chloe Creek, Pikeville, and Betty Rose Butcher, also of Pikeville.
She had a precious place in the lives of her 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. They were honored to call her their “Mam Maw.”
Eleanor grew up at Fishtrap, where her youth was nurtured by the guidance from her father (“Pappy Lum”) and her mother (“Ma Maw Nola”). She was also nurtured by the beautiful, mountainous landscapes which, throughout her life, influenced her love of all things in nature - God’s creations … all the colors and blossoms in God’s World … She learned how to work and, first-hand, she learned about the true meaning of genuine happiness.
Back in the 1930s, Pikeville was a long drive from Fishtrap … narrow, curvy roads, so, in order to attend high school, Eleanor, at a very young age, had to leave home and go live in Pikeville. A dormitory, called Wright Hall became her new home. She worked at Wright Hall to pay for the room that she lived in during those four years. Down the street a lady named Mrs. Corbin owned a boarding house. Eleanor worked there to pay for her meals which she ate there three times a day. Her job there was to make breakfast biscuits. Mrs. Corbin needed the biscuits for all those boarders. Eleanor made biscuits- - many biscuits-throughout her high school career. She graduated from Pikeville High School in 1938.
During these years, Eleanor attended First Baptist Church of Pikeville, became a Christian, and enjoyed church membership there. More recently, her membership had been with Immanuel Baptist Church of Pikeville. She continued her schooling and earned an associate degree from, what was then, Pikeville College. Later, she became a substitute teacher in the Pike County schools.
On July 28, 1939, she and Otis Blackburn were married
and began their married
life at Fishtrap. They continued living their until 1964, at which time, they were displaced by the construction of Fishtrap Dam. From there they relocated and established their new home at Stanville. Here, they built, established and operated Blackburn’s Greenhouse for the next 46 years. Eleanor could be seen busily working among the plants and flowers doing everything from propagating new plants to making bows and shaping foil paper for gift plants. At the same time, she provided her family with deep maternal love and care that she herself had experienced in her own youth. Her Christian values were continuously evident in the nurturing of her children.
For the last three years, Eleanor’s health had been in steady decline. In addition to the constant love and care of her children, Eleanor was blessed with caring and loving caregivers. Eleanor’s family is deeply appreciative and grateful to Brenda Hall, Susie Stricker, Kathy Wagner, and Debbie Daniels. These ladies showered Eleanor with genuine love. Eleanor was loved by everyone because she was so easy to love. That was her. That was Eleanor Belle Blackburn.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Keene officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Contributions may be made to Eleanor’s favorite charity St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Fayetta “Faye” Daugherty Blankenship, 70, of Camp Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Billy Dotson Hollow, Phelps, Jan. 2, 1946, the daughter of the late Lonnie and Jettie Sullivan Daugherty.
Reading the 31st chapter of Proverbs, one could not help but think of Faye. “Many women have done excellent, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

She was a founding member of Argo Pentecostal Church of God and later Camp Creek Pentecostal Church. For more than three decades Faye joyfully led the singing at the church, answering the calling and following the anointing of God.
She enjoyed raising her cattle with Clell, tending her garden, picking berries, canning, and playing card games with family. More than her hobbies, she loved her children and grandchildren immensely.
She also worked for her late daughter; Katrina, at Paw Paw Grocery for many years and later managed it following the death of her daughter.
In addition to her parents, Faye was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Katrina May; two sisters, Marilyn Ery and Juanita Johnson; two brothers, Lawrence Wolford and Herman Daugherty; and a special grandmother, Frances Sullivan.
Faye’s memory will forever be cherished by her loving husband, MacClelland “Clell” Blankenship; her three sons, Arthur Blankenship, Mac Keith Blankenship and Dustin Blankenship (Andrea), all of Stopover; her daughter, Teresa Davis (Brad) of Stopover; two brothers, Lonnie Daugherty Jr. (Betty Lou) and James Daugherty, both of Phelps; three sisters, Sharlene Fields of Phelps, Glennis Fadely and Bonnie Dotson (Warren), both of Mt. Sterling; 10 grandchildren, Mitchell May, Daniel Blankenship, Heather Blankenship, Toby Davis, Brooke Mounts, Dalton Prater, Joshua Kender, Addison Davis, Noah Blankenship and Jaxon Blankenship; and three great-grandchildren, Cloey Bevins, Payton Blankenship, and Alexis Thornsbury.
