Clarence Owen “Buddy” Dotson

Clarence Owen “Buddy” Dotson, 81, of Maryville, Tenn., formerly of Freeburn, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at The Cleveland Clinic.

He was born at Freeburn, Oct. 25, 1934, the oldest boy of nine brothers and sisters.

Clarence was a kind, gentle man who always had an open ear and a tender heart for others. Many times he put the interests of others before his own. He loved his family and was very proud of his people.

He earned his BA and MA from Morehead State University and was a proud alumnus. He went on to be an accomplished educator, serving as a teacher, principal, and guidance counselor in school systems in Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Florida, and most recently, in Sevier County and Seymour, Tenn. before retiring.

While still in education, he researched and began pursuing what would be his second career, as a funeral director and embalmer. After obtaining his Mortuary Science Degree from John A. Gupton College in Nashville, he went on to accomplish the dream of opening a funeral home for he and his family when Dotson Funeral Home opened in August 1979, and has been family owned and operated by the Dotson Family ever since.

He was a very religious person and believed deeply in his Savior. He grew up in the Pentecostal and Apostolic faiths and is an ordained minister. In his later years, he went on to further research and study, even delving into the Hebrew Language. He was always humble and wanted to continually be good to people.

He was a veteran, honorably serving in the U.S. Army. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, as was his father. He also held licenses for Real Estate, Insurance, and was an auctioneer. He was also very musically talented, with a natural ability to play most instruments. He was also a gifted songwriter, composing many of his own songs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Minnie Dotson; sisters, Edith Dotson Blair, Mary Bentley, Shelby Hunt, Della Justice; brother, Jimmy Dotson; dear friend, Walter Harrill.

Survivors include his wife, of 55 years, Jeweldene Williamson Dotson; sons, Barry K. Dotson and Brent L. Dotson; grandchildren, Shaunmarie “Alex” Dotson and Andrew Heath Dotson; sisters, Leona Francis Milam of Columbus, Ohio, and Gail Emerson (Kent) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brother, Johnny Dotson of Mooresburg, Tenn.; close family friends, Howard Kerr and Eleanor Harrill.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Gooselin Bottom Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Benny Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dotson Funeral Home, Maryville, Tenn. and J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Victor will be greatly missed by many family and friends.

Mary L. Wright

Mary L. Wright, 97, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at the Parkview Nursing Home.

She was born April 17, 1919, the daughter of the late Kenis Williams and Clara Williams.

She was a seamstress and a believer of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Evans Wright; one son, Johnny Wright; one brother, Elmer “Buddy Williams; two sisters, Margie Maynard and Betty Williams.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Patty Wright; one granddaughter, Jodi Wright; a great-grandson, Devan Wright; and a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Lucas and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Jimmy Jack Adkins and others officiating. Burial followed in the Johnson Memorial Park at Pikeville. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Wanda Jean Francisco

Wanda Jean Francisco, 65, of Cromona, died Friday, Oct. 14, 20916.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Anderson Family Cemetery at Ashcamp. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.

Diana Lynn Hackney Fuller

Diana Lynn Hackney Fuller, 59, of Jeffersonville, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2016.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.

Gladys Sue Hackney

Gladys Sue Hackney, 67, of Mouthcard, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at her residence.

Sue was born in Pike County, June 4, 1949, a daughter of the late Robie and Maxie Chapman Turnmire.

Sue was a homemaker and a member of the Grapevine Primitive Baptist Church.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers, Roosevelt, Walter, Ray, Gene, Kenneth, James, and Arnold Lee Turnmire.

Sue is survived by her husband, Estle Ferrell Hackney; one son, Randy Hackney (Dawn) of Garfield; one daughter, Teresa Fee (Donald) of Gregory, Mich.; four grandchildren, Kayla Hensley (Johnathon), Kelsey Hackney, Hunter Fee, and Ian Fee; two great-grandchildren, Hayley and Jayden Hensley; two brothers, David Lee and Adala Turnmire of Kimper; two sisters, Mae Justice of Phyllis and Edith Hackney of Walled Lake, Mich.; and many family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 20, at the Community Funeral Home, with Primitive Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Turnmire Family Cemetery at Kimper.

Visitation is all day Wednesday, with services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Amanda Gail Hurley

Amanda Gail Hurley, 31, of Pigeon Creek, W. Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Chambers Funeral Services Chapel, with Evangelist David Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Williamson-Carter Cemetery at Pigeon Creek, W. Va.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services. Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W. Va.

Wendell Johnson

Wendell Johnson, 75, of Little Creek, formerly of Long Fork of Virgie, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 10, 1940, to the late Hillard and Gladys Ray Johnson.

He was a member of the Shelby Valley Church of Christ and a retired coal truck driver.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Johnson and Lonnie Johnson; and one sister, Tammy Lee Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Burke Johnson; four sons; Wendell Dewayne Johnson (Christina Jones) of Long Fork, Anthony Scott Johnson (Crystal) of Red Creek, Justin Johnson (Kayla) of Penny Road, and Jordon Johnson of Little Creek; two daughters, Veronica Hopson (Johnny) of Dorton and Jessica Johnson (Madison Compton) of Long Fork; one brother, Willis “Toe” Johnson of Virgie; three sisters, Joyce Fleming of Turkey Pen, Elsie Burke of Long Fork, and Francis Riddle of Virgie; five grandchildren; Jonathon Hopson (Amanda), Brandi Hopson Newsom (Jeremy), Brandon Hopson (Makayla), Kendra Marcum (Zachary), and Dalton Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend and neighbor, Chris Hall.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at the Shelby Valley Church of Christ, with Church of Christ Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Burke Cemetery at Marshall’s Branch of Long Fork.

Visitation will be all day Wednesday, at the church, with services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Anton Micheal “Tony” Milisitz

Anton Micheal “Tony” Milisitz, 59, of Phelps, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Levittown, N.Y., Nov. 12, 1956, in Levittown, New York, the son of the late John and Ruth “Tootsie” Milisitz.

He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of Jesus of the Mountains Catholic Church in Phelps, until the time the church dissolved. Thereafter, he attended The Lord’s House at Phelps. He was a chef for 35 years, serving many restaurants in New York and Florida. He was a former custodian for Phelps High School and loved serving the Phelps community through Helping Ease Life’s Poverty Inc., delivering food boxes to those in need. In his spare time, he loved to be with his family. He will be missed by the many lives he has touched.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Milisitz.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Wagner Milisitz; daughters, Michelle Marie Milisitz (Josh Diles) of Phelps and Nikki Leigh Church (Brandon) of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Joseph Milisitz; three sisters, Laura Messier (Ray), Ruth Sutphin (Mike), and Jane Milisitz, all of Fla.; five grandchildren, Logan, Elijah, Lukas, Nickolas, and Samuel; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends to mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Jones & West Funeral Home, with Reverend Mike Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Cemetery at Smith Fork, Phelps. Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Mary Alice Mullins

Mary Alice Mullins, 94, of Jenkins, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born at Buchanan County, Va., March 1, 1922, the daughter of the late James and Etta LaForce Skeens.

She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Whetsel Mullins; two sons, James Douglas and Leonard Harold; and a grandson, Timothy Williams.

She is survived by four sons, Ralph Mullins Jr. (Mollie) of Elizabethtown, Thomas Mullins of Elizabethtown, Garriett Lee Mullins (Peggy) of Grundy, Va., and Randall Mullins (Libby) of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Starlett Helen Southwell (Jerry) of Hudson, Mich., Eunice “Darlene” Davis of Adrian, Mich., and Carolyn Sue Potter (Randall) of Jenkins; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, with Garriett Mullins and others officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Valley Memorial Cemetery at Big Rock, Va. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc. of Elkhorn City.

JoAnn Potter

JoAnn Potter, 57, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Goshen, Ind., Dec. 8, 1958, the daughter of Bobby G. Ford and the late Betty Ford.

Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Dale Ford.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her daughter, Krystle Thacker of Maryville, Tenn.; one son, Shawn Damron (Teresa) of Clay City; two grandchildren, Dylan Thacker and Brittney Damron; one brother, Robert Ford of Louisville; and her very best friend, Reble Bevins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Tommy England officiating. Burial will follow at the Ford Family Cemetery at Rocky Road, Millard.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the funeral home chapel, with services at 7. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

She will certainly be missed by all who knew her and treasured her.
