Argus Richardson Jr.
Argus Richardson Jr., 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Mayo Methodist Church in Paintsville, with David Spaulding officiating. Burial followed in the Patrick Family Cemetery at Leander. Arrangements were under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home of Prestonsburg.
Charles Mitchell Smith
Charles Mitchell Smith, 64, of Raccoon, died Oct. 15, 2016, at the Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pikeville, May 10, 1952, the son of Lucille Wagner Smith of Harold and the late Charles Epp Smith.
Charles was a heavy equipment salesman.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Smith.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Karen Ray Smith; one son, Shannon Smith (Christi) of Thelma; one daughter, Brittany Gibson (Justin) of Covington; one brother, Timothy Smith of Salyersville; one sister, Dianna Branham (Randall) of Henderson, Nev.; and four grandchildren, Courtney Smith, Chaz Smith, Isaac Gibson, and Hadley Gibson.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Sam Crawford officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Charles will be sadly missed and forever loved by his family and friends.
Mary Smith
Mary Smith, 74, of Pikeville, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at Signature Health Care Center.
She was born in Pike County, June 11, 1942, a daughter of the late Bud and Margie Coleman Dotson.
She was a retired factory worker.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Smith; three brothers, George, Ray, and Floyd Dotson; and three sisters, Tennessee, Nell Dotson, and Gladys Coleman.
She is survived by two sons, Ricky Smith (Barbara) and Larry Neil Smith, all of Kimper; one daughter, Jeannie Smith of Kimper; one brother, Freilland Dotson of Lexington; four grandsons, Brandon, Jordan, Micheal, and Joshua Smith; two granddaughters, Rochelle Blankenship and Nikole Dotson; five great-grandchildren Kloie, Brayden, Kaleb, Bryce, and Chayse Smith; and many family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Community Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Smith Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Ella Mae McCoy Stanley
Ella Mae McCoy Stanley, 89, of Columbus, Ohio, died Monday morning, Oct. 17, 2016, at Mount Carmel West Hospital.
She was born in Burnwell, Jan. 24, 1927, in Burnwell, the daughter oaf the late George and Alma McCoy Stanley.
Before she was married, Ella Mae worked at Sears & Roebuck in Williamson, W. Va. She was a longtime member of the Full Gospel Jesus Church in Columbus, Ohio. She enjoyed long walks, gospel music, and visiting folks at the nearby nursing home. She loved God and was a mighty prayer warrior.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow; great-granddaughter, Serenity Hopkins; sisters, Dorothy Dillion and Mary Mann; brothers, George and Clyde Stanley and Jay Casey.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa McCoy Hopkins of Columbus; grandchildren, Trista, Andrew, Taylar, Eriq, and Kody Hopkins; great-grandchild, Aadyn Hopkins; sister, Delphia Blackburn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 21, at the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, with Willie Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in the McCoy Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Kermit Phillips
Kermit John Phillips, 89, of Kimper, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at his home.
He was born at Kimper, March 24, 1926, the son of the late Leonard Phillips and Stella Dotson Phillips.
He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Eastern Coal Corporation, McVeigh; a member of United Mine Workers Local #5737; a U.S. Navy veteran; and a member of the Edo Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine Gannon Phillips; one son, Johnny Ray Phillips; three brothers, James Phillips, Herbert Phillips and Darrell Phillips; and two sisters, Lurlie Compton and Roma Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Illene Varney Phillips; one son, Alan Ross Phillips (Roma); one daughter, Rhinda Ward (David); three stepsons, Darrell Gregory Phillips (Floretta), Timothy Wayne Phillips (Becky) and Richard Kermit Phillips (Doretha); two sisters, Nola Hatfield and Geneva Lell; eight grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Patton and Pikeville Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Phillips Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation begins Thursday with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Dorothy Overstreet
Dorothy M. Overstreet, 68, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.
She was born in Woodway, Va., June 10, 1947, the daughter of the late James W. McKinney and Lelia Janell Johnston McKinney.
She was a retired dietary manager, formerly employed by Mountain View Health Care Center, and was a member of the Sweet Home Regular Baptist Church for approximately 40 years.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Mabel Hayes McKinney; and one stepbrother, Tommy Diamond.
She is survived by her husband, Freddy Overstreet; two daughters, Barbie Haynes (Seth) and Missy Sanders (Aaron), both of Elkhorn City; three brothers, Jim McKinney (Adele) of Nicholasville, Richard McKinney (Connie) of Phelps and Bill McKinney (Loretta) of Morristown, Tenn.; one sister, Roxanne Blankenship (Billy) of Elkhorn City; six grandchildren, Terry Haynes (Morgan), Sarah Haynes, Isaiah Haynes, Luke Sanders, Noah Sanders and Sadie Sanders; and two great-grandchildren, Grayson Haynes and Claire Haynes.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Kelly, Robert Osborne, Toy Looney and others officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Doris Williamson
Doris Jewell Williamson, 76, of Grassy Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Jan. 3, 1939, the daughter of the late Louie Gannon and Ludie Chapman Gannon.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Jack Gannon, Lee Gannon, Billy Gannon, Roy Gannon and Roger Gannon; and five sisters, Helen Christian, Maxine Phillips, Gertrude Otten, Nell Stevens and Charlotte Musselomi.
She is survived by six children, Dalene Stanley (Daniel) of Sidney, Janet Stiltner (Johnny) of Raccoon, Denvil Jr. Williamson (Lisa), Sandy Collins (the late Tommy), Neitha Spurlock (John) of Spurlock and Kimberly Butcher of Johnson County; three siblings, Larry Gale Gannon of Tennessee, Garnett Bragg of Virginia and Velma Pingatore of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Josh Allen and Keith Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Spurlock Cemetery, Spurlock. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Dimple Bishop
Dimple Bishop, 86, of Williamson, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, at her home.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Mountain View Memory Gardens. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Amanda Carroll
Amanda S. Carroll, 35, of Fredericksburg, Texas, formerly of Pike County, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Phyllis.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ, Phyllis, with burial following in the Justice & Taylor Cemetery, Phyllis. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
“Antney Bert” Charles
Anthony “Antney Bert” Charles, 63, of Freeburn, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Phelps, March 23, 1952, the son of the late Arthur Blaine “Bug” Charles Jr. and Lula Faye Smith Charles.
Anthony was of the Pentecostal faith. He enjoyed fishing and hanging out in Delorme with his buddies. In earlier years, he liked to spend time at the Fountain Drive-Inn, Freeburn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Jean Justice.
He is survived by one son, Kevin Stump of Freeburn; one daughter, Tabitha Hopkins of Grapevine; four brothers, Herbert Blaine Charles of Clay City, Kenneth Ray Charles (Josie) of Kimper, Robert E. Lee Charles (Connie) of Columbus, Ohio, John Paul Charles of Pikeville; four sisters, Mary Ann Dotson of Braxton County, W.Va., Phoebe Leedy of Kimper, Bessie Nelson (Dwayne) of Pinsonfork, Oma Bentley (Marvin) of Phelps; one uncle, Bert Smith (Irene) of Blackberry; one aunt, Vernie Dotson of Thacker, W.Va.; and very special people, Rose Dotson and her family; along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Freeburn Free Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Kenny Chapman officiating. Burial followed in the Charles Family Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements were under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.
Memorial donations may be made to the funeral home to assist with expenses.
“Sissy” Childers
Sheliah Marie “Sissy” Childers, 66, of Mount Sterling, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at her home.
She was born in Pikeville, Jan. 9, 1949, the daughter of the late Shirlene Childers and Martha Rebecca Anderson Childers.
She was a teacher and a member of the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by one brother, Harold D. Childers (Pam) of Pikeville; one sister, Rebecca Marie Bliffen (Chad) of Mt. Sterling; two aunts, CheChe Powell (Bill) of Elkhorn City and Judy Fhimamoto (Dennis); and eight nieces and nephews, Deana Powell, Scarlett Bliffen, Jessica Morlock, Angel Lauder, Tina Nazari, Sheerien Nazari, Brad Bliffen and Luke Bliffen.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church with Arnold Belmont Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
