Floretta Akers
Floretta Akers, 89, of Pikeville, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1915, at Pikeville Medical Center.
The was born Aug. 19, 1925, the daughter of the late Issac Thurman Stapleton and Mary Florence Simpson.
She was a homemaker and a saved Christian.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Akers, who died March 24, 2009; three brothers, Ottis Stapleton, Irvin Stapleton and Earl Stapleton; and three sisters, Lora Mae Stapleton, Emma Stapleton and Marie Pigg.
She is survived by two sons, Harold Akers (Toni) and Jimmy Akers (Vikki), both of Pikeville; one daughter, Elizabeth Faye Akers of Palm Harbor, Fla.; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with John George Blackburn officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Serving as pallbearers were Hal Akers, Josh May, Zach May, Lindsey Akers Lynch, Nick Lynch, Robert Williams, Tyler Pigg and Roger Pigg.
Honorary pallbearers were Kathy Akers, Freddie Thomas “Bucky” Stapleton, Kyle Stapleton, Sarah Pinion, Liza Chaney and Bill Stiltner.
Franchetta Bunch
Franchetta Dianna Bunch, 42, of Shelbiana, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015 at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Ohio, Feb. 29, 1972, the daughter of J. T. “Butch” Stuttle and Dianna Stuttle Clifton.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Cassandra Jo Stuttle.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Brian Bunch; one daughter, Chyane Little; one stepson, Daulton Bunch; two brothers, J. T. Stuttle and James Scott Fuller; and four sisters, Christie Edwards, Holli Stuttle, Jeniffer Spencer and Tammy Matthews.
Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Dolph Kelly officiating. Burial followed in Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
E.C. Chapman Jr.
E.C. Chapman Jr., 83, of Kimper, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital.
He was born at Kimper, Nov. 14, 1931, the son of the late Elcana Chapman Sr. and Fern Deskins Chapman.
He was a truck driver.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Leura Varney, Bill Chapman, Ray Chapman, Tony Chapman, Ivan Chapman and Curly Chapman; and one sister, June Sparks.
He is survived by two sons, Todd E. Chapman (Arlene) and Danis K. Chapman (Linda), both of Kimper; one daughter, Margaret J. Chapman (Terry) of Kimper; six brothers, Otto Chapman of Phelps, Jack Chapman, Fon Chapman and Cleo Chapman, all of Kimper; Russell Conley Chapman of Pikeville, Roger Chapman of Shelbiana; two sisters, Gen McMann of Flint, Mich., and Mag Burress of Belvil, Mich.; five grandchildren, Anthony Chapman (Jenifer), Cassandra Rowe (Shawn), Mark Richardson, Heather Davey (Pat) and Travis Keith Chapman; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan Chapman, Ethan Chapman, Logan Rowe and Lakan Rowe.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Primitive Baptist ministers officiating. Burial followed in the Varney Cemetery, Kimper. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Joyce Damron
Joyce Avonelle Damron, 78, of Sookeys Creek, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Baptist Health Center.
She was born in Pike County, Dec. 18, 1936, the daughter of the late Edward Kinney and Willie Ramsey Kinney.
She was a homemaker and member of the Sookeys Creek Freewill Baptist church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Ed “Boone” Damron; one son, Lance Damron: three brothers, Bob Hobson, James Hobson and Edward Kinney Jr.; and three sisters, Magalene Little, Elsie Cole and Brenda Kinney.
She is survived by one son, Ricky Damron (Earlene) of Sookeys Creek; one daughter, Rhonda Mullins (Tim) of Pikeville; one brother, Eddie Kinney of Gallipolis, Ohio; two sisters, Sue Thacker of Ashland and Louann Gibson of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Sookeys Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with Ray Williams, Estill Adkins, Frankie Bryant and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Damron Cemetery, Sookeys Creek. Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
“Shorty” Deskins
Garrett Alan “Shorty” Deskins, 86, of Pikeville, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born at Kimper, April 10, 1928, the son of the late Garrett Alan Deskins Sr. and Erma June (Deskins) Deskins.
He was an appraiser for Community Trust Bank, a Commonwealth Life Insurance agent, and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Gene T. Deskins, Dover D. Deskins, William M. Deskins, Jack Lewis Deskins, one infant brother; and one sister, Christine Deskins Young.
He is s survived by his wife, Virginia Ruth Stratton Deskins; one brother, Linton Deskins of Tipton, Okla.; and one sister, Geraldine Deskins May of Abingdon, Va.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Keith Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Bent Ridge Cemetery, Meta. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Don Estep
Don Jr. Estep, 38, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, at Majestic, the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born in South Williamson, Jan. 29, 1977, the son of Beulah Wolford Estep of Phelps.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Joe Estep of Phelps; three sisters, Heather Estep of Paw Paw and Lisa Estep and Marlene Estep, both of Phelps.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Phelps Funeral Home Chapel with Bruce Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Wolford Cemetery of Jamboree. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Gary Francisco
Gary Ray Francisco, 68, of Icard, N.C., formerly of Pike County, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, in Valdese, N.C.
He was born in Hellier, Oct. 27, 1946, the son of the late Grover Cleveland Francisco Jr. and Madge Adkins Francisco.
He was a tub operator in the auto industry.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Brenda Coleman.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Elaine Baker Francisco; two sons, Brad Francisco of Akron, Ohio, and Anthony Baker of Icard; two daughters, Bridget Lyons of Akron and Amber Hunt of Icard; one brother, Ronald Francisco of Feds Creek; one sister, Zuma Thompson of Ashland; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Hylton Freewill Baptist Church with Oscar Damron and Van Swindall officiating. Burial followed in the McCarty Cemetery, Lower Pigeon. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Military services were conducted by Elkhorn City DAV Chapter #140.
Minnie Goins
Minnie Alice Williams Goins, 78, of Aflex, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at her home.
She was born at Goody, July 16, 1936, the daughter of the late David and Delcie Adkins Williams.
She was a retired manager for several clothing stores, and a member of the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the ladies auxiliary and the choir.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ivan Goins; two sons, Gregory Dean Goins and Donald Keith Goins; and four sisters, Edna Truskowski, Kay Bevins, Juanita Matney and Janet Trout.
She is survived by her children, David Goins of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Connie Dean of Charleston, W.Va., and Paula Marian of Aflex; three brothers, Don Williams and Rick Williams, both of Gordon Ga., and Gordon Wallace of Belo, W.Va.; one sister, Sue Williams of Aflex; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Lee Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is after 7 p.m. Wednesday, with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Jeffrey Hall
Jeffrey Dwaynee Hall, 41, of Indian Creek of Virgie, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Royal Oak, Mich., June 4, 1972, the son of Palmer Hall Jr. and Teresa Staten.
He was an equipment operator for Elmo Greer & Son.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, William Tanner Hall; and one brother, Jimmy Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Howard Hylton Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Lonnie Jackson
Lonnie Jackson, 86, of Benton, formerly of Morristown, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Harrisburg Medical Center, Harrisburg, Ill.
Mr. Jackson was of the Church of God faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Olive Marie Lloyd Jackson; his first wife, Opal Jackson; three brothers, Claude Dotson, Harold Dotson and James Dotson; and two sisters, Ruby Abshire and Ethel Burley.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Florence Stacy Jackson; one son, Steve (Angel) Jackson of Rockvale, Tenn.; two daughters, Mary (Sonny) Matney of Bristol, Tenn., and Diane (Dan) Lester of Morristown; three stepdaughters, Sandy, Robin and Leah - who was a special caregiver and partner in crime; four grandchildren, Brittany Jackson, Dustin Jackson and Nicholas Jackson, and Steven Lee Matney; one great-grandchild, Aubrey Rose; eight stepgrandchildren; 20 stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his life-long friend, Bradley Dotson; and special sister-in-law, Chris Dotson.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Stubblefield Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Lester officiating. Internment followed in Hamblen Memory Gardens. Arrangements were under direction of Stubblefield Funeral Home of Morristown.
