Merlin Howell
Merlin Howell, 80, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 21, 1932, the son of the late Ambrose and Irene Dye Howell.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Billiter Howell; two sons, Charlie Howell and Junior Howell; and one brother, Green Howell.
He is survived by one son, Edward Howell of Pikeville; three daughters, Christine Mullins of Jonancy, Justine Dye of Richmond and Ida Howell of Pikeville; one brother, Edward Howell of Michigan; two sisters, Alice Howell of Floyd County and Nannie Howell of Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with David Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery, Coon Branch of Island Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Dortha Hunt
Dortha Vipperman Hunt, 70, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 26, 1942, the daughter of the late Glen Vipperman and Pluma Justice Vipperman.
She was a self-employed care giver and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Robert.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew Hunt; one son, Rocky Clay Hunt; two daughters, Irene Hunt Collins, and Kitty Hunt Kennard; two sisters, Margaret Ann Coleman and Glennis Hatfield; two brothers, Glen Vipperman and James Robert Vipperman; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, in the Varney Branch Calvary Church with Primitive Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Branch Cemetery. Arrangements are under diection of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday at the church, with special services at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Nell Kiser
Nell Marie Kiser, 70, of Lombard, Ill., died Nov. 16, 2012, at the Elmhurst Hospital, Elmhurst, Ill.
She was born in Elkhorn City, Feb. 9, 1942, the daughter of the late Chris and Pearl Ramey.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Wayne Kiser; three brothers, Kermit Ramey, Eugene Ramey and Herman Ramey; and two sisters, Sybil Belcher and Shelby Mullins.
She is survived by her husband, Rudy Kiser; one daughter, Jennifer Frediana; one brother, Arnold Ramey; one sister, Lois Kieter; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the Timothy Lutheran Church, with burial following in Forest Hills Cemetery, Glen Ellyn, Ill. Arrangements were under direction of Brust Funeral Home of Lombard.
Leonard May
Leonard M. May, 74, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home.
He was born at Raccoon, March 8, 1938, the son of the late Epp and Roxie May.
He was a dedicated coal miner for 37 years, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Deward May, Reford May and Virgil May; and five sisters, Ida Goff, Maudie Chaney, Ellen P. Thacker, Lennie Justice and Ruby Coleman.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beatrice Hall May; three daughters, Lisa (Donnie) Adkins, Kathy (Tom) Compton, and Amanda (John) Compton; four grandchildren, Donnie Lee (Melinda) Adkins, Anthony (Carly) Compton, Lauren Compton, and Amiee Compton; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Adkins and Abigail Adkins; four brothers, Allen (Jay), George, Victor and Roger; one sister, Virgie (Sue); and special people - Hank, Robin, Dusty, Mike, Dustin and Drew.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday Dec. 27, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Harvilla Adkins officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Myrtle McClanahan
Myrtle Varney McClanahan, 91, of Statesville, N.C., formerly of McAndrews, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Mayfork, Jan. 13, 1921, the daughter of the late Flem Varney and Mary Cathern Williamson Varney Fannin.
She was a homemaker and a member of Broad Street Church of Christ, and had served as a Sunday school teacher at previous churches.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett McClanahan, whom she married
Dec. 25, 1961.
She is survived by one son, Paul McClanahan; and two granddaughters, Brittani McClanahan and Danielle McClanahan both of Statesville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the McAndrews Church of Christ with David Parsley officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, at the church.

Thelma Mounts
Thelma Louise Mounts, 49, of Sidney, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Edgarton, W.Va., Oct. 7, 1963, the daughter of the late Artemas and Joanne Mounts.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Mounts.
She is survived by one son, Donald Lee Messer of Sidney; one brother, Kenneth Mounts of Edgarton; four sisters, Ann Sincell of Louisa, Dorothy Hamilton of Elk Creek, Margaret Mounts of Columbus, Ohio, and Pansy Sincell; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, with special services at 7.
Betty Jo Murphy
Betty Jo Murphy, 82, of North Matewan, W.Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Cornerstone Hospital/St. Mary’s of Huntington, W.Va.
She was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Oct. 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Lee Gillespie and Effie Chafin Gillespie.
She was retired, having worked as a store clerk at Akers Grocery, North Matewan.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Murphy; three brothers, Woody Gillespie, Ed Gillespie and Leonard Gillespie; and two sisters, Minnie Varney and Zell Collins.
She is survived by two sisters, Josephine Ferrell of North Matewan and Mary Rife of Oceana, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lowell Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Hatfield Cemetery, Newtown, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan.
Martha Newcomb
Martha Ann Newcomb, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
She was born Oct. 9, 1944, the daughter of the late Rob Damron and Hattie Kiser Damron.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Janie Newcomb Standifur; one brother, James Damron; and one grandson.
She is survived by her husband, Nolan Newcomb; one daughter, Tonya Compton; two brothers, Fred Damron and Robert Damron; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Kermit Wright, Robbie Osborne and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday with special services Friday and Saturday at 7.
Grover Reed
Grover Darrell Reed, 79, of Asheboro, N.C., formerly of Turkey Creek, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at the Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, N.C.
He was born at Hardy, June 3, 1933, the son of the late William H. and Dixie Lockard Reed.
He was a retired staff sergeant from the United States Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a former carpenter and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred Reed; and two sisters, Ruth Farley and Hester Maynard.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Staton Reed; one son, Grover Reed of New Jersey; two daughters, Sherry J. (McCoy of Randleman, N.C., and Rene McCoy of Asheboro; three brothers, William R. Reed of Kansas, Carl A. Reed of Michigan, and James G. Reed of Turkey Creek; three sisters, Francis A. Berkley and Maxine Dildine, both of Turkey Creek, Bonnie S. Ryan of South Carolina; eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, in the Turkey Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with elders of the church officiating. Burial will follow in the Reed Cemetery, Turkey Creek, with military honors conducted by Belfry Chapter 141 of the Disabled American Veterans. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler.
