Corney Hankins
Cornelius "Corney" Hankins, 78, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of the Pond Creek area, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, in the Levine & Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, N.C.
He was born at Stone, Sept. 8, 1934, the son of the late Estelle and Nesbith Goff Hankins.
He was a retired salesman for the Bell & Howell Corp., a veteran of the U.S. Army and very active in the Special Olympics.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Sharline Grubbs.
He is survived by his wife, Joanana "Jodi" Stuart Hankins; two daughters, Darlene Hankins and Sandra Hankins, both of the home; and one sister, Ernestine Runyon of Barberton, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at noon Monday, Dec. 17, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Scott officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Freddie Lockard
Freddie Ray Lockard, 63, of McCarr, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
He was born in Matewan, W.Va., Nov. 18, 1949, the son of the late Chester Arthur and Rosa Belle Roberts Lockard.
He was former coal miner and a Kentucky Colonel.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one daughter.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Mae Payne Lockard; three sons; one daughter; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Per his request he will be cremated.
R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry is in charge of arrangements.
Lloyd Stanley
Lloyd Nelson Stanley, 69, of Pikeville, died Dec. 16, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 8, 1943, in Pike County, the son of the late Lloyd W. Stanley and Alta Sanders Stanley.
He was a retired sales engineer and served in the reserves.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Crowe Stanley.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Belcher Stanley; four sons, Nelson Thomas Stanley of Louisville, Michael Todd Stanley of Columbus, Ohio, Phillip Wayne Stanley of Columbus, Ohio, John Andrew Stanley of Independence, Ky.; one sister, Jean Cantrell of Hellier; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Lucas and Son Funeral Home with Bill Staggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Funeral Home.
John Weddington
John Larry Weddington, 62, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
He is survived by his stepmother, Iva Jean Chaney Weddington; two brothers, Arthur Weddington Jr. and Donald Weddington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Fred Klatka officiating. Interment followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Evelyn Farnum
Evelyn Farnum, 55, of Right Fork of Laurel Creek, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Williamson, W. Va., June 14, 1957, the daughter of Christine McCoy White of Laurel Creek and the late Zan White.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter White.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Ricky Ferris; one daughter, Andrea Evans; one sister, Reva Lowe; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, in the Victory Christian Center, Lenore, W.Va., from 6 to 8 p.m., with the Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating.
Carmel Fish
Carmel Fish, 89, of McAndrews, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, July 10, 1923, the daughter of the late Roland T. and Chloe Hensley.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Octavia Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Fish; and a host of brothers and sisters.
She is survived by four sons, George Gillman of Ohio, Hobert "Hobo" Fish of McVeigh, John B. Fish of Hardy and Douglas Fish of Johns Creek; two daughters, Carmel Jean Stanley and Debbie "Joe Bear" Church, both of McAndrews; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in the Octavia Freewill Baptist Church with Gerria Reynolds and Dennis Hinkle officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is at the church from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with special services nightly at 7.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to R.E. Rogers Funeral Home.
Camille Helsel
Camille Helsel, 49, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, in Clay County, W.Va.
She was born in Williamson, W.Va., May 21, 1963, the daughter of Linda Jarrell Wellman of Elk Creek, W.Va., and the late Freelin Wellman.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Clyde and Louise Farley.
She was a self-employed certified nurse practitioner, and formerly worked at Williamson Memorial Hospital and Logan Regional Medical Center. She also was an instructor in the nursing program at Southern West Virginia Community College.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Todd Helsel; one son, Brandon Helsel of Delbarton; two daughters, Brittany Perry of Taylorville and Tiffany Helsel of Delbarton; two sisters, Lisa Branham of Millersport, Ohio, and Kathryn Wellman of Chapmanville, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Clyde Farley officiating. Burial will follow in Lenore Memorial Gardens, Lenore, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to offset funeral expenses.
Carmen Hunt
Carmen Hunt, 91, of Pinsonfork, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.
She was born in Pike County, Oct. 23, 1921, the daughter of the late Tom and Edna May Hunt.
She was a retired school teacher, having taught in several schools in the Pike County School System for 77 years, and was a member of the Sharondale Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hunt; one son, Larry Hunt; one daughter, Carla Brown; two brothers, and four sisters. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Hunt of Belfry; two brothers, Gary Hunt of San Antonio, Texas, and Jim Hunt of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Gerber of California; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Werntz officiating. Entombment will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, with special services at 7.
Fay Johnson
Fay Adams Johnson, 94, of Left Fork of Long Fork, Virgie, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Bertha Murphy
Bertha Murphy, 91, of Phyllis, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Feb. 15, 1921, the daughter of the late Jessie Reynolds and Virgie Varney Reynolds.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson Murphy; one son, James Harvey Murphy; two brothers, Johnnie Reynolds and Lonnie Reynolds; and two stepsisters, Mertie Bevins and Rosie Gannon.
She is survived by one daughter, Yvonne Ward of Phyllis; one sister, Irene Murphy of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Upper Grapevine Church of Christ with Jim Abshire, Dwayne Abshire, Willie Abshire and Jack Horne officiating. Burial will follow in the Reynolds Cemetery, Phyllis. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Maxie Norman
Maxie Farley Norman, 100, of McCarr, and Huntington, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at her home in Huntington.
She was born Sept. 23, 1912, the daughter of the late Robert Farley and Jessie DeHart Farley.
She owned and operated Norman's Grocery for many years and was a member of the Enon Baptist Church, Blackberry City, W.Va.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. P. "Dock" Norman; one daughter, Betty Jo Norman; three brothers, Charley Farley, Henry Farley and R.L. Farley; five sisters, Mae Boyd, Josephine Beckett, Fonnie Hall, Ethel Varney and Jean Farley; one grandson, and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by two daughters, Emogene Vipperman and Loretta Norman Baker; one brother, Roy James Farley; one sister, Virginia Nichols; three grandchildren, Brenda Rucker, Bill Vipperman and William Norman Baker; nine great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Hatfield Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
