She was mother to 10 children, five sons, Franklin (Virgie) Billiter, Jr., of Greasy Creek Rd., Roy (Robin) Billiter of Greasy Creek Rd., Stacy (Mary Frances) Billiter of Greasy Creek Rd, Delbert (Paula) Billiter of Louisville, and Samuel (Kellie) Billiter of Indian Creek; five daughters, Dottie (Mike) Tackett of Virgie, Paulette (Mike) Newsom (who precedes her in death), Betty (Bill) Johnson of Long Fork Rd, Jeanie Bartley of Indian Creek, and Leshia (Silas) Adkins of Greasy Creek Rd. She was grandmother to 29 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Paulette Newsom; two brothers, Danny and John L. Adkins; and three sisters, Lorene Gillespie, Inez Thacker, and Iva Lea Adkins.
She leaves behind one sister, Betty Adkins of Greasy Creek Road, and one brother Ernest Adkins, also of Greasy Creek, along with many wonderful relatives and friends.
Our mother was an exceptional woman as most of you here know. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith, joining the Greasy Creek Church in January 1983 where she has been a member for over 30 years. She loved to sing as well as hear others sing those old baptist hymns. She was known throughout for her expertise in cooking, canning and sewing, the things she enjoyed most in life other than her children and grandchildren. The meals she prepared were bountiful and she always had enough for anyone that stopped by. She sought comfort in feeding guests when they would visit our home, and you never knew who might be at the dinner table. She has fed lawyers, judges and senators, along with many a friend at her country table. Many of you have probably eaten her cooking at some time.
Mom spent her life as a homemaker and did not work outside the home, but with 10 children how could she have had time for any thing other. She was a tremendously hard worker, with her day beginning at dawn and not ending until dark.
Greasy Ma, as she was known to some of her grandchildren, was always delighted to see them come and visit. In the last years she would ask over and over again, when are my babies coming home. She wanted all the little babies to lie in the bed with her, so she could hold them.
A little over 14 years ago Mom was placed on a ventilator, due to complications from lung disease. This is the life she knew her last remaining years. Most thought this was the end to Lola Billiter, although this was definitely not the case. We didn’t look at this as a sad thing but as a blessing, a second chance to be able to spend quality time with her. It allowed her to see grandchildren and great grandchildren that she would not have seen and allowed them to know their grandmother. Mom remained quite healthy and had many good years after this and was exceptionally happy and in good spirits until the end.
We children, along with many others will miss our mother, but please do not fret for our mother or our family, because the Lord has ever so blessed her and us as well. He blessed her with many years before taking her to begin a joyous life in Heaven with God. We thank everyone for your compassion, love, and kindness during these grievous times. May God be with each and every one of you.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Old Regular Baptist Ministers Officiating. Burial will follow in the Billiter Family Cemetery at Greasy Creek. Pallbearers will be Lola’s grandsons: Mike Tackett, Todd Tackett, Frank Billiter, Greg Billiter, Kevin Newsom, Tony Newsom, Jonathan Billiter, Ryan Billiter, Laython Newsome, Jeremy Adkins, Seth Adkins, Ben Billiter, Logan Billiter, and Lincoln Billiter.
