George Bowens Jr.
George Michael Bowens, Jr., 35, of Mallory, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, in Davin, W.Va.
He was born in Man, W.Va., April 20, 1977, the son of George Michael Bowens Sr. of Mallory and Dolly Ann Ellis Morrison of Christian, W.Va.
He was disabled and of the Pentecostal faith.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Kathern Bowens; and his maternal grandparents, Roy and Ina Lee Ellis.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Faye Bowens; his stepfather, Randy Morrison; one daughter, Dana McNeely, one brother, Heath Cline of Tennessee; two sisters, Kristy Lester and Sabrina Cline of Baisden, W.Va.; and one grandson, Liam McNeely.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Eagle Sanctuary with the Rev. Walter Hawkins and Bishop Anthony Hudgins officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Godby Heights, Pecks Mill, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W.Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Sanctuary, Man.
Ronnie Hackney
Ronnie Hackney, 38, of Pikeville, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, June 8, 1974, the son of Carl Hackney and Hattie Anderson Hackney.
He was a coal miner, formerly employed by Cheyenne Elkhorn Coal Company and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Melisa Adkins Hackney; two sons, Harley Hackney and Tony Miller (Hackney); two daughters, Hope Hackney and Zoe Hackney; and one brother, Ricky Hackney.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Flanary Cemetery, Mouthcard. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Edna Kidd
Edna Kidd, 43, of Hellier, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Lucy Mature
Lucy Jean Mature, 89, of Harold, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Floyd County, May 19, 1923, the daughter of the late John and Hattie Yates Mature.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosalee Gillespie; two brothers, Nick Mature and George Mature; and five sisters, Margaret Hall, Rhoda Hamilton, Polly Mature, Nora Mature and Mazie Webb.
She is survived by one brother, Amen Mature of Tazwell, Va.; one sister, Sarah Bevins of Harold; and one grandson, Frank Gillespie Jr. of Harold.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Pilgrim Home Old Regular Baptist Church, Grethel, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilburn Parsons Cemetery, Harold. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation is all day Friday and Saturday, at the church.
MacArthur Thompson
MacArthur "Mac" Thompson, 69, of Nampa, Ind., formerly of Feds Creek, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, June 12, 1943, the son of the late Ernest and Vilas Thompson.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by two children, Rebecca Thompson of Illinois and Michael Thompson of Indiana; two siblings, Paul Thompson of Michigan and Ermalee Stanley of Trenton, Mich.; and one grandchild, Elizabeth.
Funeral arrangements were under direction of Vargen Chapel Funeral Home, Nampa.

Carl Akers
Carl Bruce Akers, 56, of Matewan, W.Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, May 21, 1956, the son of the late William Frank Akers and Minnie York Akers.
He was a disabled county maintenance worker.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Ray Akers and James Monroe Akers.
He is survived by one daughter, Carla Michelle Akers of McVeigh; three sons, David Keith Akers of Hardy, Carl Bruce Akers Jr. of Mt. Sterling and Derrick Shane Akers of Matewan; nine brothers and sisters, Minnie Akers, Frank Akers Jr., Donnie Gene Akers, Clara Akers, Estil Paul Akers, Ronnie Gene Akers, Roger Lee Akers, Michael Eugene Akers and Kathy Akers; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Shawn Ward officiating. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday.
Gary Church Jr
Gary Church Jr., 30, of Thacker, W.Va. died Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013.
He was born at Thacker, March 14, 1982, the son of Alicia Dehart Church of Thacker and the late Gary Church Sr.
He attended the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Jesus’ Name at Edgarton, W.Va. and was a coal miner at the former Superior Mining Co. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed collecting guns and riding four wheelers.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shawnree Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ginger Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, at the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Jesus’ Name at Edgarton, with Rev. Ronnie Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery at Thacker.
Visitation will be Saturday at the church with services 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of West Funeral Home of McAndrews.
Harold Compton
Harold Edward Compton, a 1953 graduate of Virgie High School, died Nov. 20, 2012 in Cincinnati.
He was born March 22, 1934 in Pike County, to the late Emma Johnson Fleming and Steve Compton. He was the grandson of the late W.H.C. (Doc Bill) Johnson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter G. Fleming; and two sisters, Beulah F. Harmon and Olive Jones.
After a short music career, he served in the U.S. Army and finished college at Pikeville College. He also attended a business school in Ohio. He worked a variety of jobs and was a small business owner for several years. He retired in 2012 and lived in Loveland, Ohio.
He is survived by two nieces, Kathy Drehobl of Phoenix, Ariz. and Brenda Buranosky of Chicago; two nephews, David Jones of Nicholasville and Don Belcher of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
The family will have a reception for friends and family at the Dorton Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday April 14. Any family and acquaintances are welcome.

Eva Justice
Eva Mae Justice, 76, of Washington Avenue in Princeton, Tenn. died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at her residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1936, in Bartley, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John David Lamie and Mattie Smith Lamie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Justice; one son, John David Adkins; three daughters, Barbara Ann Adkins, Sheila Hatfield, and Drema Hatfield; and twelve brothers and sisters.
She is survived by one daughter, Marlene Michalski and husband Gerald of Saltville, Va.; three grandchildren, Rick Sweeney and wife Heather, Shawn Kinder, and Jeri Lynn Michalski; three great grandchildren, Bailey Kinder, Taylor Kinder, and Auburn Kinder; one brother, John Lamie and wife Beulah of Jewel Valley, Va.; and one sister, Leona Stanley of Narrows, Va.
In keeping with Eva’s wishes her body has been cremated and there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 921 W. Neville St., Beckley, WV 25801.
Arrangements are under the direction of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton.
William Osborne
William P. Osborne, 63, of Kimper, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, June 2, 1949, the son of the late Sylvester Osborne and Jessie Phillips Osborne.
He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Community Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eunice “Tootie” Osborne.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Stevens Osborne; one son, Chad Morris; one daughter, Ashley Jones; one sister, Ann Conn; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Mark Justice officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday.
Jesse Scott
Jesse D. Scott, 27, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013.
He was born Feb. 21, 1985, in Pike County the son of Paula Luck and the late Dale Scott.
He worked as a manager at Bob Evans in Pikeville.
He is survived by his mother Paula Luck of Pikeville; one daughter, Destinee Jane Scott of Pikeville; one sister, Tracy Kendrick, all of Shelbiana; and one nephew.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 16, at Thacker Memorial Chapel Saturday. Burial will follow at the Mike’s Branch Cemetery at Lower Johns Creek.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Memorial Chapel of Pikeville.
