Thomas Wolfe
Thomas Jerry Wolfe, 66, of Hatfield, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Nov. 28, 1946, in Lewisburg, Tenn., the son of the late Myatt C. and Dollie Cavender Wolfe.
He was a former coal miner, and a veteran having served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Nolan Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister Edna Faye Alley.
Survivors include his wife Brenda Sue Francis Wolfe of Hatfield; a daughter, Barbara Gillman of Hatfield; three brothers, Robert Wolfe of Regina, Clifford Wolfe of Castalia, Ohio, and Donald Wolfe of Ulysses; four sisters, Mary Damron of Pikeville, Patsy Tackett of Shepherdsville, Wanda Bartley of Pikeville, and Donna Sue Smith of Monroe, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Nolan Freewill Baptist Church with Ray Taylor and Earl White officiating. Burial will follow in the Francis Cemetery on River Front Road, Martin County.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, with special services at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Kolo Bodine
Kolo Harrison Bodine, 103, of Ocala, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013.
She was born in Jamboree, Aug. 17, 1909.
She lived in Kentucky and West Virginia until 1953 when she and her family moved to Florida. She was an elementary school teacher for 40 years having taught in West Virginia and Florida. She retired in 1971 from East Marion School in Marion County, Fla., after teaching there for 18 years.
She was a 60-year member of First United Methodist Church of Ocala and had been a long time member of the Eutawah Sunday School Class. She was an active member of ADK’s Fidelius Chapter, and the Red Hat Society.
Following her retirement she became an avid quilter, piecing and hand-quilting over 80 beautiful quilts for family and friends. She was a member of the Pine Needles Quilting Club.
Her many travels included a visit to every state in the nation and every province in Canada, as well as several countries abroad.
She is survived by her children, Charlene Harrison Oliver of Lexington, Frederick (Johanne) Harrison of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jimmy (Jana) Harrison, of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A visitation has been scheduled for Saturday Feb. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church Children’s Music Fund, 1126 E Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, FL 34470 or to Hospice of Marion County Inc., 3231 SW 34th Ave., Ocala, FL 34474.
Wanda Caudill
Wanda P. Caudill. 82, of Pikeville, formerly of Jeremiah, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Knott County, Nov. 18, 1930, the daughter of the late Garland Pigman and Dessie Seals Pigman.
She was a retired school teacher, formerly employed by the Letcher County Board of Education, was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and the Voice of Victory Church, Shelbiana.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivry Caudill; and one daughter, Judi Campbell.
She is survived by one son, Jeffrey Caudill of Pikeville; two daughters, Sharon Whitaker of Hazard and Darlene Cox of Indiana; six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Dixon Memorial Cemetery, Letcher County. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Donald Smith
Donald Kenneth Smith, 77, of Gilbert, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W.Va.
He was born in Glen Alum, W.Va., March 2, 1935, the son of the late Homer and Ina Carter Smith.
He was a business owner, a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War, and was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church, Justice, W.Va.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Smith and Thomas Smith.
He is survived by one son, Mark Smith of Justice; two daughters, Lori Stacy of Gilbert and Amy Vance of Logan; four brothers, David Smith of Newbury, Md., Paul Smith of Newkent, Va., Robert Smith of Katy, Texas, and Ronald Wilson of Bridgeton, N.J.; five sisters, Mary Ward of Gilbert, Joyce Desantos of Richmond, Judy Ellis of Wharncliffe, W.Va.; Cherie Hannah of Bluefield, W.Va., and Elsie Wilson of Millville, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Jenna Dukes, Nicholas Hoff and Marki Lester.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the First Missionary Baptist Church of Justice with the Rev. Jim Nagy and Bro. Timer May officiating. Burial will follow in the Hollywood Cemetery, Gilbert. Arrangements are under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.
John Smith Sr.
John Lewis Smith Sr., 76, of Wharncliffe, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Cedar/Beech Creek, W.Va., Oct. 17, 1936, the son of the late Melvin and Maudie Hatfield Smith.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, an elder of Ben Creek Church of Christ, worked with the Shepherd of the Hills Food Pantry, and was on the Ben Creek Fire Department Board.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Smith Jr., Troy Smith and Roosevelt Smith; and three sisters, Thelma Rhodes, Josephine Trent and Blanch Engram.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shelby Jean Mullins Smith; one son, John Lewis Smith Jr. ; two daughters, Sandra Ann Keator of Harrisburg, N.C., and Tina Louise Spence of Delbarton, W.Va.; two brothers, Roger Smith of Phelps and Larry Smith of Tennessee; two sisters, Sylvia Prince of Chicago and Joyce Fields of Charleston, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Ben Creek Church of Christ, Wharncliffe, with the Revs. Gene Clemons, Denny May and Cletis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Cedar/Beech Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W.Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, with a special service at 7.
Linda Smith
Linda Sue Carroll Smith, 58, of Monticello, formerly of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Jan. 6, 1955, the daughter of the late Herman Carroll and Mary Alice Brewer Carroll.
She was a homemaker and seamstress and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oda Smith; and one brother, Herman Michael Carroll.
She is survived by two sons, Scott Ray Smith and Kaywood Smith, both of Monticello; two brothers, Ronnie Carroll of Island Creek and Matthew Carroll of Stanville; one sister, Brenda Carroll Slone of Island Creek; and one grandchild. MaKayla Nicole Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Island Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Parmley's Grove Cemetery, Monticello. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is at the church, with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Jennifer Adkins
Jennifer Lynn Adkins, 40, of Shelbiana, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, the daughter of Arville Newsome and the late Linda Carol Newsome.
She was the owner of Coal Miners Pizza and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Edna Newsome.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Chad Adkins; four daughters, Isabelle, Emma, Angelica and Ciera; and two brothers, Anthony Newsome and Logan Newsome, both of Dorton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rockhouse Old Regular Baptist ministers and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Newsome Family Cemetery, Dorton. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Chris Akers
Chris Akers, 45, of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, Oct. 22, 1967, the son of Noah Akers and Dora Flanary Akers of Leroy, Ill.
He was disabled, the former manager of a Dollar General.
He is survived by three sons, Christopher Akers, Noah Robert Akers, C.J. Akers of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Destiny Akers of Prestonsburg; three brothers, Crit Akers of Butler Ind., Curtis Akers of Leroy, Bobby Akers of Baltimore; eight sisters, Erlene Morrison of Houston, Sylvia Termini of Woodstock, Ga., Elaine Gilpin of Terre Haute, Ind., Nellie Little of Prestonsburg, Jeanette Elkins and Dawn Webb, both of Coldwater, Mich., Louise Anderson of Ashcamp, Loretta Akers of New River, Ariz.; and two grandchildren, Mary Lexus and Addison.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Osborne Family Cemetery, Dorton. Arrangements were under direction of Carter Funeral Home of Prestonsburg.
James Boyd
James Ernest "Mountain Man" Boyd, 72, of Freeburn, formerly of Vansant, Va., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Buchanan County, Va., the son of the late Francis Marion Fanning and Ethel Jackson Boyd.
He was a retired coal miner, a member of United Mine Workers of America and a member of the Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Madeline Boyd and Myrtle Wagner; and two brothers, Teddy Wayne Boyd and David Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Betty Sturgeon Baker Boyd; five sons, James Bryant Boyd of Leemaster, Va., Michael Leon Boyd and Darell Gene Boyd, both of Vansant, Bradley Dean Boyd of Grundy, Va., and Ricky Allen Boyd of Christiansburg, Va.; four sisters, Martha May of Freeburn, Marie Charles, Kathleen Lockhart and Dorothy Hibbitts, all of Vansant; one brother, Jennings Boyd of Bishop, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jimmy Lee Smith and other Primitive Baptist elders officiating. Burial will follow in the F.M.F. Boyd Cemetery, Boyd's Ridge, Vansant. Arrangements are under direction of Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy.
