Joan Bentley
Joan Bentley, 80, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Mouthcard.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1933, to the late Lit Adkins and Gladys Dempsey Adkins.
Joan was the wife of the late Troy Bentley, a homemaker, and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Along with her husband and parents, Joan was preceded in death by one infant son; one brother, Arnold Adkins; two sisters, Mae Adkins and Ruth Stiltner.
Joan is survived by four daughters, Mary Smith of Johnson City, Tenn., Peggy Little of Kingsport, Tenn., Debra Kilgore of Mouthcard, Linda Little of Pikeville; one sister, Geneva Coleman of Panama Beach, Fla., companion, Angland Thacker; special friend and caretaker, Virginia; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; and a host of loving family and friends.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Lucas and Son Funeral Home with Lloyd Holland and Gary Hoggston officiating. The burial will follow in the Adkins Cemetery at Mossy Bottom.
Robert Carter
Robert Lee Carter, 83, of Raccoon, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, June 16, 1930, the son of the late Willie Carter and Emma Hess Carter.
He was a carpenter and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Goff Carter; and two sisters, Bertie Carter and Lorraine Thacker.
He is survived by one daughter, Trenia Johnson of Raccoon; six siblings, Bonnie Tucker and Richard Carter, both of Raccoon, Brenda Talbert, Jim Carter and Michael Carter, all of Louisville, Charles Carter of Macon, Ga.; two grandchildren, Thomas Thacker and Rachael Hope Bevins; and one great-grandchild, Stormy Bevins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Harris and Jack Justice officiating. Burial followed in the Carter Family Cemetery, Raccoon. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
“Dottie” Cole
Dorothy “Dottie” Cole, 53, of Road Branch, Pikeville, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Floyd County, Nov. 20, 1959, the daughter of the late Mark Smith and Della Johnson Smith.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Edward of Sookeys Creek; two children, Michelle Hampton (Leif) and Monica Cole, both of Sookeys Creek; and one grandchild, Gage Wright.
Funeral services were held at noon Friday, July 5, in the Island Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Donnie Harris and Frankie Bryant officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Family Cemetery, Weeksbury. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Polly Cottner
Polly Ellen Kimberlain Cottner, 86, of Abilene, Texas, died Friday, June 28, 2013.
She was born in Pikeville, March 25, 1927, the daughter of the late Arthur Kimberlain and Nora Lockhart Kimberlain.
She was employed by F.W. Woolworth’s Dime Store in Miami, Fla., for 40 years and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Cottner, whom she married
in 1949; three brothers, Don Kimberlain, Ed Kimberlain and Steven Kimberlain; and two sisters, Edith Lawson and Ruth Sherrow.
She is survived by two sons, David Cottner and Daniel Cottner, both of Abilene; one brother, David Kimberlain of Miami Lakes, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene, with Bro. Freddie Gillentine officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home of Abilene.

Ruth Hensley
Ruth Madgline Hensley, 84, of Ormond Beach, Fla., died Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Florida Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach.
She was born at Hardy, Feb. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Hi and Bernie Stollings.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Helvey; her second husband, Gene Hensley; one brother; and one sister.
She is survived by one son, Terry Helvey of Ormond Beach; two grandchildren, Christine Keeler and Kimberly Helvey, both of Ormond Beach; one great granddaughter, Kaitlynn Keeler; and eight sisters and brothers, Alane Hunt of Tazewell, Va., Eva Gale Bolen and Doris Wellman, both of Belfry, Jewel Scott of Richmond, Adith Young and Mildred Stanley, both of Hardy, Irvin Stollings of Pound, Va., and Hershel Stollings of South Lebanon, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, in the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Ormond Beach. Burial followed in the Memorial Park, Ormond Beach.

Blaine Lester
Blaine Lester, 86, of Mouthcard, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville.
He was born in Pike County, the son of the late Emory and Causby Blankenship Lester. He was a resident of Pike County most of his life and was a member of the Mouthcard Baptist Church. He was a retired Coal Miner and member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife, May Charles Lester; two daughters, Peggy Crouse and Erma Dotson.
He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Dotson of Mouthcard, and Brenda Ratliff, of Allen; one son, Jeremy Elkins of Berea; one brother, Thurman Lester of Hurley, Va.; six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ben Martin and Rev. Dale Tomlinson officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. at the funeral home with services Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Grundy Funeral Home.
Ervin Ramey
Ervin Ramey, 77, of Mouthcard died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 27, 1935, in Conway, Va. to the late James Ramey and Winnie Clevinger Ramey.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Mae Smith Ramey of Mouthcard; two sons, Donnie Ramey of Lick Creek and David Allen Ramey of Lexington; and three daughters, Kathy France and Misty Comer both of Pikeville, and Rita Anderson of Mouthcard; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Bailey Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.
Harold Roberts
Harold Roberts, 58, of Mays Branch, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Feb. 27, 1955, the son of Joyce Roberts and the late Hillard Roberts.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Harold E. Roberts, and one daughter, Crystal Lynn Roberts, of Xenia, Ohio; three brothers, Jimmy Roberts, Wayne Gillman and Daryl Roberts; two sisters, Teresa Yates and Diane Hamn; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 5, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Vernon Sesco and others officiating. Burial followed in the Tackett Family Cemetery, Island Creek Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Janice Scott
Janice Lee Pauley Scott, 76, of 215 Crystal Springs Lane, Shelby, N.C., died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was born July 22, 1936, in Mingo County, West Virginia the daughter of the late Joseph Edward Pauley and Reba Sammons Pauley.
She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and devoted many years as the primary caregiver to her parents. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Shelby, Order of the Eastern Star in Fallston, and an avid volunteer in UCAN, Leona Smith Neal Senior Center, and Life Enrichment Center in Shelby.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Scott.
She is survived by a son, Jeffery Burl Scott of Cary, N.C.; two daughters, Rachel Scott Wood of Gaffney, S.C. and Marcia Scott Pruitt of Asheville, N.C.; brother, Larry Joseph Pauley of Shelby; sister, Margaret Ann Runyon of Dallas; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, with Tommy Runyon officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Huddy, with Rev. Tommy Runyon officiating.
Visitation is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Mission Fund, 606 S. DeKalb Street, Shelby, NC 28150.
Arrangements are under the direction of R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Ethel Tompkins
Ethel Marie Tompkins, 83, of Jenkins, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.
She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Girtie (Robinson) Mullins; her husband, Warren G. Tompkins; one son, Harold Eugene Tompkins; one brother, Homer Mullins; two sisters, Gladys Dotson and Chlorine “Sis” Mullins; and one grandchild.
She is survived by one son, Donald Tompkins of Jenkins; two daughters, Barbara Winebarger and Brenda Mullins-Hall, both of Hiltons, Va.; two sisters, Shirley Collins of Pound, Va., and Mae Johnson of Jefferson City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 4, in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Darnell and the Rev. William Berry officiating. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 5, in the Dewey Memorial Cemetery, Pound. Arrangements were under direction of Baker Funeral Home of Pound.
