James Daugherty
James Chester "J.C." Daugherty, 86, of Phelps, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Jamboree, March 21, 1927, the son of the late Daniel Daugherty and Bertha (Daugherty) Daugherty.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gooslin Daugherty; four daughters, Elaine Hatfield and Inga Daugherty, both of Phelps, Gisele Guthrie of Newport, N.C., and Tolberetta Frazier of Mt. Sterling; two brothers, James Arthur Daugherty of Columbus, Ohio, and Larry Daugherty of Florida; one sister, Loretta Urdak of Columbus; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Gooslin Bottom Free Pentecostal Church of Phelps with Pastor Benny Freeman and the Rev. Bobby Conn officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Gooslin Bottom Church youth.
Pauline Brant
Pauline McCoy Brant, 77, of Newark, N.Y., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at her home.
She was born at Raccoon, July 5, 1936, the daughter of the late George and Augusta (Coleman) McCoy.
She was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict, and retired from Parker-Hannifin after 25 years of employment.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Brant, who died in 1995; two sisters, Mary Zelphia McCoy, who died as an infant, and America "Merkie" Fordham; and three brothers, Fred McCoy, Samuel Bud McCoy and Robert McCoy.
She is survived by five children, Ray Brant, Ryan Brant, Pamela Brant, Kimberly Brant and Camella Bloomer, all of New York; one sister, Hester Anderson of Raccoon; 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 24, with burial following in the Rose Cemetery, Newark.
Paul Runyon
Paul Edward "Big Chew" Runyon, 91, of McCarr, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va.
He was born in Williamson, W.Va., June 28, 1922, the son of the late Robert Lee and Dixie McCoy Runyon.
He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed by Eastern Coal Company, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanch Marie Runyon; his second wife, Lola Runyon; two sons, David Paul Runyon and Edward J. Runyon; one daughter, Joan Runyon; two brothers, James Smith and Robert Runyon; and two sisters, Minnie Francis Lawson and Betsy Runyon.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Salyers Runyon; two daughters, Cindy Runyon and Virginia Robertson, both of McCarr; three sons, Johnny Runyon of Gig Harbor, Wash., Tony Runyon of Veddar, Canada, and Gary Tyler Runyon of Belfry; one stepdaughter, Dana Doyle of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Leslie Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Belfry Chapter #141 D.A.V. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday with Buddy Kendrick officiating.
Paul Blackburn
Paul David Blackburn, 55, of Berea, passed away Aug. 19, 2013.
He was born in Pikeville, Sept. 2, 1957, the son of Lavonne Reynolds Blackburn and the late James I. Blackburn.
He was a welder and worked for Nancco of Berea and was a member of Southland Christian Church.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Douglas Blackburn; and one sister, Margaret (Mickey) Elliott.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Susie Bray Blackburn; and two daughters, Kandice (Jonathan) Campbell of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Sarah Blackburn of Richmond.
Also surviving are two sisters, Anna (Ernie) Justice of Hardy and Melva Blackburn of Phyllis; two brothers, Keith Blackburn of Lexington and James Kent Blackburn (Karen) of Marietta, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Kanda Campbell and Olivia Campbell.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 23, at the Berean Bible Church, Phyllis, with Arnold Adams and David Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Alex Reynolds Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Bertha Branham
Bertha Branham, 86, of Raccoon, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, April 23, 1927, the daughter of the late John Hess and Maudie Thacker Hess.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Branham; three brothers, Albert Hess, James Hess and Johnny Hess; and three sisters, Lula Adkins, Macie Thacker and Elsie Hess.
She is survived by two siblings, Dan Hess of Raccoon and Arlena Adkins of Fords Branch.
Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Opal Church
Opal Church, 95, of Elkhorn City, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, in Beckley, W.Va.
She was born in Pike County, April 12, 1918, the daughter of the late Arson Potter and Laura Conley Potter.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Sulphur Spring Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Finnie Adkins; her second husband, William D. Church; two sons, Alec Adkins and David Adkins; one daughter, Fayetta Blackburn; one brother, Thomas Potter; and one grandson, Danny Bruce Adkins.
She is survived by one daughter, Helema Jones of Beckley; four grandchildren, Lanny Adkins, Lisa Runion (Bob), Donnie Jones and Tiffany Bailey-Slone; and one great-grandchild, Robbie Runion.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Howard Murphy and Bill Conley officiating. Burial followed in the Dow Brooks Cemetery, Draffin. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Nolaine Coleman
Nolaine Coleman, 76, of Kimper, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at her home, with cancer.
She was born in Pike County, June 14, 1937, the daughter of the late John Scott and Gay (Justice) Scott.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Coleman; three brothers, Charles, Chester and Ester Scott; and one sister, Ruth Williams.
She is survived by four children, Tommy Coleman Jr. (Sherry) and Patricia Coleman (Darrell Daniels), both of Hurley, Va., Ronale Coleman (Marie) of Paw Paw, Kay Abbott (Toby) of Kimper; three sisters, LeeEtta Thornsbury and Earlene Anderson, both of Kimper, Patty Looney of Ohio.
She is survived by seven grandchildren, Jason Abbott (Shara Holbrook) of Kimper, Chad Wolford (Larisa) of Whitesburg, Evan Wolford (Keisha) of Jenkins, Brittany Coleman of Pikeville, Brandy Coleman (Cody) of Hurley, Va., Chelsea and Justin Wolford of Paw Paw; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordan Abbott of Pikeville, Matthew Holbrook of Phyllis, Cheridan Harley, Dylan and Shannon Wolford of Whitesburg, Whitney and Gabriel Wolford of Jenkins, Kayden Wolford of Paw Paw.
The pallbearers were Jason Abbott, Chad Wolford, Evan Wolford, Randy Wolford, Justin Wolford and Nathan Coleman.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Edo Freewill Baptist Church with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial followed in the Justice Family Cemetery, Kimper, beside of her loving husband, Tommy. Arrangements were under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Polly Ann Justice
Polly Ann Moore Justice, 92, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Hellier, Jan. 29, 1921, the daughter of the late Sam Moore and Rhoda Sanders Moore.
She was a retired LPN, employed for over 37 years at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, and was a member of the Third Street Church of Christ (now Cornerstone Community Church).
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, John Paul Justice; one daughter, Bethal Phillips; four brothers, Oris Edward Moore, William Curtis "Snub" Moore, Boyd Carson Moore and James Harlan Moore; and five sisters, Ethel Moore, Barbara Ellen Huffman, Martha Jane McConnell, Lucinda Callahan and Vida Moore.
She is survived by one son, Robert Harold Justice of Pikeville; and two grandchildren, Patrick Duncan Justice of Shelbyville and Allan Kimble Justice of Pikeville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Cemetery, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday, in the chapel.
Shirley Justice
Shirley Ann Johnson Justice, 51, of Shelbiana, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in McDowell, June 17, 1962, the daughter of the late Ballard and Lona Newsome Johnson.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Eric Ryan and Daniel "Bubba" Rayna.
She is survived by her husband, Benny R. Justice; two daughters, Kristie Senters and Samantha Justice; two brothers, Dale Johnson and Ricky Johnson; seven sisters, Olivia Johnson Vermontez, Betty Johnson, Carol Burke, Brenda Hall, Sheila Branham, Kathy Johnson, and Denise Johnson; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Reed Adkins, Jimmy Jack Adkins and Richard Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Buckingham Cemetery, Bevinsville. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
