Ronnie Fields
Ronnie Lee "Buck" Fields, 57, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his home.
He was born in South Williamson, Aug. 18, 1955, the son of the late William Douglas and Virginia Alice Woods Fields.
He was a retired coal miner, and a member of United Mine Workers of America and the Williamson Masonic Lodge.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Lee Fields Jr.; one brother, William Douglas Fields Jr.; and one grandson, Bryan Konner Singletary.
He is survived by his wife, Jolanda Fields; two sons, Ryan Wesselink and Kevin Douglas Fields, both of the home; two daughters, Amanda Nichole Fields of Bristol, Tenn., and Rachel Wesselink of the home; one sister, Tammy Pope of Hickory, N.C.; three brothers, Gordon Fields and Bruce Fields, both of Granite Falls, Ill., Randy Fields of Turkey Creek; and three grandchildren, Joshua Hayden Singletary, Lexee Singletary and Shenna Singletary.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Mikey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday with special services at 7.
Fan Fleming
Fan Fleming, 92, of the Left Fork of Long Fork of Virgie, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at his home.
Arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Owsley Johnson
Owsley "Stanley" Johnson, 95, of Virgie, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Etty, March 4, 1918, the son of the late George Franklin (G.F.) and Vesta Roberts Johnson.
He was a graduate of Virgie High School, Georgetown College and the University of Kentucky. While at Georgetown, he was a member of the Pi Kapp Alpha fraternity.
Mr. Johnson was a retired school teacher and bus driver at Virgie High School. He was a member of PCEA, KEA and NEA. He was also a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.
Most importantly, he was led to the Lord by Pastor Dave Hammond of Faith Baptist Church at Myra.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Ratliff Johnson, who died Nov. 3, 1981; three brothers, Woodrow W. Johnson, George F. Johnson Jr. and Charles Johnson; and two sisters, Marie Anderson and Irene Spence.
He is survived by one son, George Stanley Johnson (Susie) of Pikeville; one daughter, Jone Carol Goodman (Paul) of Indian Creek; one brother, Hobart Clay Johnson of Virgie; one sister, Ruby Picklesimer of Lexington; five grandchildren, Melissa Leigh Goodman Slone, Paula Michelle Little, Stan Michael Johnson, Steven Patrick Johnson, Jordan Scott Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren, Daniel Little, Peyton Elswick, Hillary Elswick, Zoey Little, Luke Johnson, Faith Johnson, David Johnson and Austin Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with David Hammond officiating. Entombment will follow in the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Military services will be conducted.
Pallbearers are Stan Michael Johnson, Steven Patrick Johnson, Jordan Scott Johnson, Johnny Mitchell Slone, Joey Dale Little and Benjamin Clay Johnson.
Howard Newsome
Howard Newsome, 78, of Naugatuck, W.Va., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at the Martin County Healthcare Facility, Inez.
He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., July 17, 1935, the son of the late Alderson and Pricy (Smith) Newsome.
He was a former employee of the Mingo County Courthouse, was a gifted pianist and played the piano in church for over 50 years, as well as for the Happy Four Quartet.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Newsome, Everett Newsome and Charles Newsome; two sisters, Alice Newsome Stepp and Ruth Newsome Rose; and one half-sister, Isabell Brewer.
He is survived by two brothers, John H. Newsome of Naugatuck and Albert Newsome of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Dorothy Hensley of Naugatuck and Cora Stepp of Columbus; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, in the Warfield Church of God with Pastor Kenneth Gore officiating. Burial followed in the Newsome Cemetery, Naugatuck. Arrangements were under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Charles Prater
Charles E. Prater, 80, of Springfield, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013.
He was born at Greasy Creek, Jan. 28, 1933, the son of the late Perry and Bessie Prater.
Charlie loved to fish, but was passionate about bluegrass music.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Rissie Prater; three brothers, Harold Gillam, Dennis Ray Gillam and James Gillam; one sister, Bobbie Jean Ramsey; and one grandchild, Creasie Sue Prater.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Edith; six children, Connie Ward (Paul), Maggie Oliver (Mark), Cindy Ford (Carl), Bessie Hopkins, Troy (Shawn), David (Aleta), and Mike (Shelly); one brother, Luster; one sister, Bonnie Adkins; 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the Newcomer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor William Howe officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Newcomer Funeral Home of Akron, Ohio.

Jeanette Pruitt
Jeanette Pruitt, 78, of Robinson Creek, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
She was born in Floyd County, Dec. 9, 1934, the daughter of the late Mitchell Keens and Tressie Collins.
She was a cook at the Pike County Jail and a member of the Fords Branch Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Pruitt; one son, Steve Pruitt; and one brother, Ray Keens.
She is survived by three sons, Ferlin Pruitt of Robinson Creek, Mike Pruitt (Karen) of Lexington, Woody Pruitt (Tammy) of Cowpen; one daughter, Frankie Young (Frank) of Piney Flatts, Tenn.; two brothers, Paul Collins and Tommy Collins, both of Drift; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Sammy Casebolt officiating. Burial will follow in the Fords Branch Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Jim Stumbo
James Isaac "Jim" Stumbo, 65, of Varney, W.Va., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Ragland, W.Va., Jan. 24, 1948, the son of the late Walter and Maude Mahon Stumbo.
He was a retired coal miner, having worked more than 28 years in the coal industry, and was a longtime member of the Sardis Old Regular Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Smith Stumbo; one son, Jeffrey Isaac Stumbo of Forest Hills; two daughters, Jami Maynard of Hatfield and Jennifer Sparks of Williamson, W.Va.; one brother, Jesse Crum of Solon, Ohio; three sisters, Helen Varney of Varney, Nellie Justice of Bancroft, Mich., Pauline Gilman of Owasso, Mich.; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Joey Evans and Brian Dillon officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home Delbarton W.Va.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Luevernie Thoman
Luevernie "Deskins" Thoman, 83, of Sidney, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Williamson, W.Va., Jan. 8, 1930, the daughter of the late Riley and Barbara Bennett Bowens.
She was formerly employed as a cook by the Pike County Board of Education.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William Riley Bowens.
She is survived by one son, John Bowens of Stone; two daughters, Barbara Brock of Sidney and Dianna Adkins of Fort Gay, W.Va.; three sisters, Yvonne Jewell, Violia Stanley and Lorraine Varney; and an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Van Zant and Jeanie Maynard officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Christopher Maynard
Christopher Jared Maynard, 34, of Covington, formerly of Williamson, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Florence.
He was born in South Williamson, Oct. 2, 1978, the son of Darlene Webb Varney of Land O'Lakes, Fla., formerly of Williamson, and Timothy Joel Maynard of Turkey Creek.
He was a law student at Salmon P. Chase College of Law of Northern Kentucky University where he was a Salmon P. Chase Scholar, a member of the Salmon P. Chase Student Bar Association and a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He was also very involved with Toastmasters International, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Williamson.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, George Maynard; and his maternal grandparents, Foster and Fern Webb.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, Gary Varney; his stepmother, Iravanda Maynard; his paternal grandmother, Ruby Maynard of Aflex; one brother, Zachery Varney of Land O'Lakes; and one stepsister, Chastity Dawn Cobb of Eden, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug, 8, at Hopeful Lutheran Church, Florence, with the Rev. Blair Fields officiating.
A memorial service will also be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Weaver Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Edsel Bragg officiating. Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Arrangements are under direction of Weaver Mortuary of South Williamson.
