Delphia Rowe
Delphia Rowe, 102, of Caney Creek, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born at Greasy Creek, June 19, 1911, the daughter of the late Winwright and Annie Robinson Adkins.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William James Rowe; two infant sons, Virgil Gene Rowe and Ronnie Lee Rowe; four brothers, Elmer Adkins, Elzie Adkins, Earl Adkins and Leonard Adkins; and two sisters, Eula Mae Adkins and Irene Justice.
She is survived by three sons, Elmer Leon Rowe of Atlanta, Ga., Jimmie Edward Rowe of Caney Creek, Arnold Blake Rowe of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Betty Sue Bentley of Pikeville and Loisteen Caudill of Caney Creek; 15 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, in the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Kermit Wright, Curt Carroll, Jimmy Dye, Carson Wright, Hillard Newsome and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Visitation is in the funeral home chapel with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The body will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Friday to lie in state until time for the funeral service.
Frank Slone
Frank Slone, 70, of Phelps, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Sept. 28, 1942, the son of the late Roscoe and Dora Daugherty Slone.
He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Sovereign Coal Company; was a member of United Mine Workers of America; and was of the Church of God faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and six brothers.
Left to mourn are his wife, Helen Irene Scott Slone; one daughter, Brianna Paige Coleman; a special niece and caregiver, Inga Norman; a special sister-in-law and helper, Maggie Sanson; a special son, Carl Ray Lester; three sisters, Pearl Coleman, Pricie Hurley and Elsie Charles; special friends, Paul Ray Charles and family, Lucy Ferrell and Leonard Hurley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, in the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home Chapel with ministers Eddie Stepp, Marvin Casey and Odis Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Slone Family Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday with services nightly at 7.
Donald Coleman
Donald Ray Coleman, 73, of Freeburn, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born July 20, 1940, in Phelps, the son of the late Lawrence and Pearl Thorpe Coleman.
He was a security guard and of the Pentecostal Faith.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Coleman.
He is survived by his wife, Jessie Hall Coleman of Freeburn; one son, Keith Coleman of Freeburn; three daughters, Donna Blankenship, Regina Coleman both of Freeburn, and Georgia Norman of Phelps; three sisters, Connie Jackson of Memphis, Tenn., Joyce Collie of Munford, Tenn., and Lois Harris of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, James Coleman of Freeburn and Darius Coleman of Phelps; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 1 at Faith Tabernacle Church with Charles Meek and others officiating. Burial followed in the Freeburn Community Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Arvid Edgil Roberts
Arvid Edgil Roberts, 68, of Virgie, died July 29, 2013 at Mountain View Healthcare.
He was born Jan. 16, 1945 in Pike County, the son of the late James Silas and Nora Sturgill Roberts.
He was veteran of the U. S. Army and member of Dorton Old REgular Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell Roberts, Lewis Davis, Raymond Roberts; one sister, Fannie June Roberts.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; sons Michael Roberts of Robinson Creek; three grandchildren; one brother, James Silas Jr. of Hammond Indiana; and one sister, Melster Sayer of Ypsilanti, Mich.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Old Union Regular Baptist Church with Carson Wright, Teddy Honaker and James Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Family Cemetery at Virgie.
Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Grant Compton
Grant Compton, 75, of Phelps, died July 27, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born May 14, 1938, in Stopover, the son of the late Charlie and Mary Bell Dotson Compton.
He was a retired coal miner and of the Church of God faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Sanders Compton.
He is survived by one son, Rick Ward of Pikeville; two daughters, Anita Fleming of Clintwood, Va. and Misty Compton of Phelps; two brothers, George Compton of Majestic and Jessie Compton of Freeburn.
A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday July 31, at the Phelps Funeral Home with Otis Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Sanders Family Cemetery at Phelps.
Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Home.
Michelle Davis
Michelle Carrie Davis, 35, of Sidney, died Thursday July 25, 2013, at her residence. She was born March 26, 1978, in Maui, Hawaii, to Frank and Anna Nicolas of Maui.
She was a registered nurse at Thomas Memorial Hospital and a member of the Pikeville Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bobby Duane Davis, one son, Bobby Davis of Sidney; two brothers, Jerome Nicolas and Justin Nicholas of Hawaii.
Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday night at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with special services at 7 p.m. with Ernest Dean officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Ronnie Hayes
Ronnie D. Hayes, 57, of Jenkins, died July 28, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a truck driver.
He was born Sept, 27, 1955, in Jenkins, the son of the late Augustus and Helen Marie Haley Hayes.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Hayes; two sisters, Sharon Hayes and Valetta Hayes Smallwood.
He is survived by one brother, Johnny Hayes of Williamsburg; three sisters, Patty Uukoma of Hawaii, Denise Hall of Kent, Ohio and Debbie Hayes of Jenkins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 30 at the Church of God of Prophecy with Jeff Slone officiating. Burial followed in the Hayes Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home.
Norval Lawson
Norval Orlando Lawson, 67, of Olive Hill, died July 27, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born, Jan. 30, 1946, in Pike County, the son of the late Willie and Ora B. Hall Lawson.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley Lawson; one sister, Hilda Lawson Keene; and one son, Michael D. Lawson.
He is survived by one son, Norval Glenn Lawson; and one daughter, Patricia Lawson Lyons; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A private service was held for the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home.
Chad McPeek
Chad Edward McPeek, 37, of Shelbiana, died July 27, 2013, at his residence.
He was a disabled miner.
He is survived by one son, Dalton Chase Bryant of Sookey’s Creek; one daughter Breanna McPeek of Millard; two brothers, Slade McPeek of Shelbiana and John Paul McPeek of Chloe; and one sister, Sherry Coleman of Millard.
Funeral services were held Tuesday July 30 at Calvary Freewill Baptist Church with Jay Akers, Jackie Dials and other officiating. Burial followed in the Thacker Family Cemetery at Greasy Creek.
Marie Ray
Marie Ray, 75, of Brushy Road, died July 26, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 1, 1937, in West Virginia, the daughter of the late Chester and Vesta Creameans Peyton.
She was homemaker and a member of the Piso Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy T. Ray; and one daughter, Vesta Jane Hinkle; one grandson, Travis Matthew Maynard.
She is survived by one son, Lyonel Edward Jr. of Meta; two daughters, Barbara Goff and Ada Maynard both of Pikeville; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 29 at Piso Freewill Baptist Church with Bill Maynard and Bobby Maynard officiating. Burial followed in the Runyon Maynard Cemetery at Piso.
Arrangements were under the direction of Community Funeral Home.
