Gitaw Harris
Gitaw Harris, 77, of Island Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, in Hazard.
He was born in Pikeville, Oct. 14, 1936, the son of the late Harvey and Alice Carter Harris.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Johns Creek Chapter #166 of Disabled American Veterans.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Delmar Harris; and one sister, Catherine Matney.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Fisher Harris of Pikeville; three sons, Harvey Dean Harris of Bowling Green, and Cecil Abbott and Dewain Abbott, both of Illinois; two daughters, Nila Melander and Joy Howley (Bob), both of Illinois; one brother, Harvey Harris Jr. of Lexington; two sisters, Opal Varney of Winchester and Gerlene Slone of Pikeville; eight grandchildren, Nicole Canada, Veronica Rodriguez, David Oraha, Eddie Abbott, Greg Abbott, Vickie Abbott, Steven Abbott, and Kristen Abbott; and a host of great-grandchildren.
The family will accept friends at Thacker Memorial Chapel, Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 18, with services nightly at 7, with Donnie Harris and others officiating. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, with D.A.V. honors observed by Johns Creek Chapter #166.
Interment will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.
Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Clara Lamb
Clara "Billie" Lamb, 69, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood.
Arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Arthur Ratliff Jr.
Arthur Ratliff Jr., 59, of McCarr, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Jefferson, Tenn.
He was born in Matewan, W.Va., June 27, 1954, the son of the late Arthur Ratliff and Bunia Whitt Huddle.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe W. Ratliff and Freddie Ratliff.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Akers Ratliff; two sons, Randy Ratliff of McCarr and James Harrison of Hardy; one daughter, Rebecca Hurley of Matewan; one brother, Kermit "Moose" Ratliff of New Market, Tenn.; three sisters, Martha "Sis" Reed of McCarr, Linda Duke of Flatwoods and Mary Ratliff of Ashland; and three grandchildren, Kaleb Hurley, Jonathan Hurley and Ava Lee Ratliff.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, Belfry.
Emma Ward
Emma L. Ward, 66, of Winchester, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Pikeville, Nov. 30, 1946, and was cared for by the late Arson and Tennessee Blankenship, formerly of Argo.
She was a member of the Colby Road Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Charley Ward; two daughters, Dana L. Potter of Elkhorn City and Angela Conley of Winchester; and four grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral services were held Oct. 10 at Scobee Funeral Home by Bro. Troy Sammons and Bro. Ronnie Sammons. Entombment was in the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, Pikeville.
Polly Bishop
Polly Ann Thacker Thornsbury Bishop, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Canada, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Woods Edge Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
She was born at Canada, July 19, 1935, the daughter of the late Elder Joe and Ethel Fuller Thacker.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Deerfield Primitive Baptist Church, Liden, Mich.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bishop Jr.; three brothers, J. B. Thacker, Harold Thacker and Clifford Thacker; and one sister, Joyce Thornsbury Fleming.
She is survived by seven children, Lavonda Robinette of Bellville, Mich., David Thornsbury of Matewan, W.Va., Susan Widner of Batavia, Ohio, Debbie Bujarski of Whitmore Lake, Mich., Marie Charles, Joann Martini and Joe Bishop, all of Cincinnati; three sisters, Hazel Thornsbury Sturgill, Dixie Smith and Marie Jacobs, all of Canada;19 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder David A. Thacker and Elder Randal Thornsbury officiating. Burial will follow in the Thacker Family Cemetery, Daggs Branch, Canada. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Johnny Bryant
Hassel Jr. "Johnny" Bryant, 66, of Bowling Fork, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pikeville, May 17, 1947, the son of the late Hassel Bryant and Vassie Bryant.
He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Old Federal Mining Company and was of the Church of God faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Bryant and Arlan Bryant.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Robinson Bryant; three children, Jamie Bugg, Rodney Bryant and Robin Thacker; two brothers, Troy Bryant and James "Baldy"; four sisters, Helen Sue "Carolyn" Coleman, Inez Sykes, Joy Stewart and Mable Epling; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Dale Sanders and others officiating. Burial will follow in the R.H. Ratliff Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday with Richard Gibson officiating.
Elster Childers
Elster Childers, 83, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born at Hellier, Nov. 28, 1929, the son of the late Harve Childers and Melster Childers.
He was a coal operator, a member of Thomas C. Cecil Lodge #375 F&AM and a member of the Regular Baptist Church.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Elster Eugene Childers; and three brothers, Sherlene Childers, Homer Childers and Bobby Childers.
He is survived by his wife, Fayetta Childers; and one brother, Foster Childers of Marrowbone.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in the O.T. Hinton Mausoleum, Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville, with Eddie Overstreet officiating. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday, in the chapel, with masonic services at 7 p.m.
Dick Farrington
Richard "Dick" Farrington, 76, of Hardy, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born in McComas, W.Va., Nov. 14, 1936, the son of the late Robert Glen Farrington and Daisy Mae Compton Farrington Rice.
He was the former owner and operator of Dick's Heavy Equipment, a U.S. Air Force veteran serving as an aircraft specialist, and attended the Belfry First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Farrington and Eugene Farrington; and three sisters, Shirley Distelzweig, Sandra Rice and Myra Stacy.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, JoAnn "Jody" Farrington; two daughters, Debbie Kendrick of Hardy and Angel Colbert of Pikeville; one brother, Larry Farrington of Baltimore; and two grandsons, Dr. Kristofer Kendrick of Manassas, Va., and Captain Kurtix Kendrick of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Helton officiating and Mark Gannon giving the eulogy. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Sada Justice
Sada Warf Justice, 87, of Freeburn died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Parkview Nursing Home, Robinson Creek.
She was born in Pike County, Jan. 5, 1926, the daughter of the late William Nelse Blankenship and Elizabeth Fife Blankenship.
She was a teacher at Freeburn Elementary and a member of the Shelby Valley Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Henry Warf and Edward Justice; one daughter, Gwendolyn Smith; two brothers, Lloyd Blankenship and Boyd Blankenship; three sisters, Dorlis O'Bradovich, Agnes Hunt and Mary Sanders; and one grandson.
She is survived by one son, Holland Hurley Jr. of Pikeville; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Greg Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Blankenship Cemetery, Freeburn. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is in the chapel after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Freddie Mounts
Freddie Mounts, 73, of Barrenshe Creek Freeburn, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center, Phelps.
He was born Nov. 7, 1939, the son of the late Morrow and Ruth Holley Mounts.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in the Barrenshe Church of God, Freeburn, with Pastor Bobby Dale Wolford officiating. Burial followed in the Mounts Family Cemetery, Barrenshe Creek.
Arrangements were under direction of Phelps Funeral Services Inc. of Phelps.
