Lewis Burke II
Lewis Dale Burke II, 34, of Varney, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, Oct. 18, 1979, the son of Lewis Dale Burke I and the late Joan Etta Burke.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Opal and Ruth Burke.
In addition to his father, he is survived by four sisters, Amanda Samsom, Danika Pruitt, Karla Burke Dennison and Katrinia Burke.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W.Va.
Edith Kells
Edith D. Kells, 78, of Pikeville, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.
She was born in Pikeville, Nov. 22, 1935, the daughter of the late Charlie Cochran and Ruby Hamilton Cochran.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Scott and Phyllis Howard; and two brothers, Charles Buford Cochran and Floyd Edward Cochran.
She is survived by her husband, John F. Kells of Arizona; two stepsons, Michael Kells of California and Patrick Kells of Arizona; one stepdaughter, Michelle Johnson of Canada; one brother, Dewey M. Cochran of Cochran Layne; two sisters, Lavonne Tatterson of Cochran Layne and Matilda Scott of Joes Creek.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Bliffen officiating. Entombment followed in the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Alice May
Alice Maynard May, 65, of Stopover, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital in Williamson, W.Va.
She was born in Woodman, Nov. 25, 1948, the daughter of the late Fayette and Evelyn McCoy Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Maynard; three brothers, Lyle Smith, Billard Smith and Bert Smith; and one sister, Ealen Hunt.
She was formerly a bus driver.
She is survived by her children, Sid Maynard (Christa) and Chad Maynard (Zettie), both of Georgetown, Melinda Scarberry (Gary) of Stopover, Shelia Stump (Shawn) of Freeburn and Deanna Hoosier (Leonard) of Man, W.Va.; one brother, Joe Sexton of Tennessee; 14 grandchildren, James Shelton (Emily), Kayla Banks, Brittany Maynard, Matt Maynard, Chad Allen Maynard (Amber), Audrey Allen, Savannah Maynard, Donessa Maynard, Jacob Maynard, Havanna Scarberry, Carla Sanders, Logan Hoosier, Nevaeh Hoosier and Brantly Hoosier; nine great-grandchildren; and two special people she loved as her own, Willie and Tonya Charles.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, in the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home Chapel with ministers Benny Freeman and Larry Rife officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Family Cemetery, Woodman. Arrangements were under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Oleta Mullins
Oleta Mullins, 79, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at the Morristown Hamblen Hospital, Morristown, Tenn.
She was born in Pike County, March 16, 1934, the daughter of the late Farley Justice and Josie Thacker Justice.
She was a homemaker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Montward Justice, Farley Justice Jr., Jessie Justice and Estil Justice.
She is survived by her husband, James Elster Mullins; one son, James Edward Mullins; one daughter, Betty Rose Dotson; one brother, Homer Justice; two sisters, Betty Jo Barbie and Hilzie Hall; three grandchildren, Michael Edward Mullins, Holly Oennette LeFevers and Tiffany Rose Dalton; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Greasy Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Claymon Adkins and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, EAst Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Special services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, at the church.
Bonnie Ratliff
Bonnie Lou Ousley Ratliff, 66, of Banner, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Floyd County, July 7, 1947, the daughter of the late Clyde and Sara DeRossett Ousley.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Roy Ousley, Clydie Finnegan, Eunice Johnson, Maggie Hicks, Gene Cook, Goldie Johnson and Aggie Woods.
She is survived by one son, Joe Poe of Martin; four daughters, Jeanie Burchett and Misty Poe, both of Banner, Shelia Stanley of Prestonsburg, Jennifer Poe of Kimper; one brother, Johnny Ousley of Prestonsburg; four sisters, Dottie Ousley Brown of Michigan, JoAnn Marsillett of Prestonsburg, Peggy Sue Johnson of Eastern, Julie Buffington of Ohio; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, in the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Willie Crace and Jerry Manns officiating. Burial followed in the Ousley Cemetery, Conley Fork, Spurlock. Arrangements were under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.

Curtis Ratliff
Pastor Curtis "Junior" Ratliff, 72, of Powells Creek, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, June 15, 1941, the son of the late Curtis Ratliff and Madeline Williamson Ratliff.
He was a coal miner and pastor of the Powells Creek Holiness Church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Matney Ratliff; three sons, Perry Ratliff, Greg Ratliff and Kevin Ratliff; seven brothers, Julius Ratliff, Clarence Ratliff, Clinard Ratliff, Billy Ratliff, Raymond Ratliff, Ray Ratliff and Bobby Ratliff; two sisters, Betty Short and Virgie Adams; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Powells Creek Revival Center with Billy Ratliff and Charles Ray Justice officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Violet Rowe
Violet Ramsey Rowe, 98, of Collins Highway, Pikeville, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Aug. 13, 1915, the daughter of the late Joe B. Ramsey and Florence Gray.
She was a retired school teacher, formerly employed by the Pike County Board of Education, and was a member of the Buckfield Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Gladis Rowe; and one son, Larry Kent Rowe.
She is survived by one daughter, Annie Marrs; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy DeHart and others officiating. Burial followed in the Potter Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Bobby Runyon
Bobby Leland Runyon, 90, of Pinsonfork, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center, Phelps.
He was born Sept. 2, 1923, the son of the late Leonard and Hattie Bevins Runyon.
He was a retired teacher, formerly employed by the Pike County Board of Education; a World War II veteran, serving as a navigator on a B-17 airplane for Army Air Corps; a lifetime member of the DAV; and a member of the McVeigh Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou O'Bryan Runyon; his stepmother, Maggie Scott Runyon; and his half-brother, James Walker Runyon.
He is survived by two sons, Richard L. "Pete" Runyon and Charles Robert Runyon, both of Pinsonfork; one half-brother, Bill Runyon of Vero Beach, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with James Justice officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Belfry Chapter #141 DAV conducted military graveside services.
Carol Thompson
Carol Sue Thompson, 60, of Raccoon, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, May 19, 1953, the daughter of Marie (Coleman) Coleman of Raccoon and the late Allen Coleman.
She was a self-employed retailer, worked at Sears, and was a member of the Grassy Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Coco" Thompson; and one sister, Denise Gaye Coleman.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by five siblings, Irvin Coleman, Ronald Coleman, Franklin Coleman and Gary Coleman, all of Raccoon, and Wayne Coleman of Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Brad Williamson and Grassy Freewill Baptist Church ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Randy Webb
Randy Derek Webb, 55, of West Valley City, Utah, formerly of Williamson, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Williamson, W.Va., April 21, 1958, the son of Foster Dean "Bob" and Anna Louise Lloyd Webb of Williamson.
He was a former line production worker for Huish Detergents.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lisa Fields Webb; one son, Derek Austin Webb of the home; one brother, Darren Webb of Huntington, W.Va.; one sister, Ginger Lockwood of Roanoke, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Josh Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Crabtree Cemetery, Road Branch, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
