Robert Belcher
Robert Blake Belcher 74, of Elkhorn City, died Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 17, 1939, the son of the late Ronald Burns and Opal Morgan Belcher.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Castle; two brothers, James Belcher and Roger Belcher; and two sisters, Irene Blankenship and Imogene Rose.
He is survived by two sons, Ronnie Belcher, of Morristown, Tenn., and Chris Belcher of Haysi, Va.; two brothers, Bart Clinton Belcher of Dandridge, Tenn., and Darrel Belcher of Ohio; one sister, Peggy Hackney of Elkhorn City; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City. Burial followed in the Elkhorn City Cemetery.
Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Elkhorn City.
Gary Elswick
Gary Wayne Elswick, 58, of Tunnel Road, Virgie, died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at his residence.
Funeral services were incomplete and will be announced later by Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Edith Kells
Edith D. Kells, 78, of Pikeville, died Friday, December 20, 2013.
She was born November 22, 1935, in Pikeville, the daughter of the late Charlie Cochran and Ruby Hamilton Cochran.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Scott and Phyllis Howard; and two brothers, Charles Buford Cochran and Floyd Edward Cochran.
She is survived by her husband, John F. Kells of Arizona; two step sons, Michael Kells of California, and Patrick Kells of Arizona; one step-daughter, Michelle Johnson of Canada; a brother, Dewey M. Cochran of Cochran Layne; and two sisters, Lavonne Tatterson of Cochran Layne and Matilda Scott of Joes Creek.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 22, 2013, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home chapel, with Jerry Bliffen officiating. Interment followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery mausoleum.
Arrangements were under the direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“Huck” Thacker
Charles “Huck” Thacker, 58, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013.
He was born March 7, 1955, in Pike County, to the late Estill Thacker and Mae Slone Thacker.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Kinney.
Charles is survived by his loving spouse Darlene Thacker, of Shelbiana; a son, David Kinney, of Rocky Road; two granddaughters, Samantha Kinney and Rachael Kinney; a grandson, Zackary Akers; four brothers, Estill Dean Thacker and Phinis Thacker, both of Red Creek, Roger Dale Thacker of Lower Pompey and Johnny Thacker of Fishtrap; and a sister, Doris Huffman, of Lower Pompey.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 23, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home. Jimmy Jack Adkins will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Pikeville.
He is sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Lola Wallace
Lola Irene Wallace, 87, of Bent Branch, Pikeville, died Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Signature Healthcare.
She was born January 15, 1926, in Pikeville, the daughter of the late Sam and Sarah Jane Hinkle Young.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Delmon Little Jr., and second husband, Curtis J. Wallace; a daughter, Nancy Jane Blackburn; a brother, Willard Young; and four sisters, Viola Fields, Izola Ray, America Sesco and Oma McCown.
She is survived by two sons, Rodney (Jan) Little and Curtis M. (Marcia) Wallace; two daughters, Etta (William) Hughes and Susan (Randy) Kirk; a brother, Roger V. Young; five sisters, Ocie “Peggy” Young, Ola Tackett, Wyzona Kinney, Sue Branham and Carrol Hall; and nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 24, 3013, at Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville, with Bro. David Bentley officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James N. Little, Brandon Tackett, Randy Kirk, Terry Blackburn, William Hughes, Matthew Wallace, Christopher Little, Jared Little and John Perkins.
Visitation will be Monday at the funeral home, with special services at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikevillle.
Paul Blevins
Paul Blevins Sr., 87, of Turkey Creek, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013.
He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Feb. 1, 1926, the son of the late Eli and Mary Jenkins Blevins.
He was a retired employee of Republic Steel, Canton, Ohio, where he worked 39 years, a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Jesus' Name, Edgarton, W.Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Blevins, Warren Blevins and Clifford Blevins; two sisters, Hazel Bevins and Pauline Bevins; and one grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nellie Jude Blevins; three sons, Paul Blevins Jr. of Turkey Creek, Ralph Blevins of Davenport, Fla., and Joseph Blevins of Canton; one daughter, Faye Lowery of Marietta, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Jesus' Name, Edgarton, with the Rev. Ronnie Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the Maynard-Jude Cemetery, Martin County. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Military honors will be conducted by DAV Chapter #141 of Belfry.
Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Mary Casey
Mary Casey, 75, of Phelps, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born in Pike County, July 25, 1938, the daughter of the late James "Jim" Casey and Minnie Mae Smith Casey.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one son, Wendell Ledford; one daughter, Sandra Kaye Lester of Phelps; one sister, Carolyn Ratliff of Ransom; one grandchild, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Phelps Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Casey officiating. Burial will follow in the Casey Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday with special services at 7.
Madonna Cox
Madonna Cox, 40, of Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, in Asheville
She was born in Pike County, Sept. 14, 1973, the daughter of Patsy Charles Lycans of Pikeville and the late Lyle Sonny Lycans.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James David Cox.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three children, Ishmael Jordan May, Emily Keene and Cody Daniels, all of Asheville; one brother, Mason Lycans of Pikeville; one granddaughter, Isabella Grace May; a niece, Lorin Holloway of Pikeville; and a host of friends.
Friends may gather for a time of remembrance on Friday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, with a simple service to begin at 5 p.m.
The family requests that everyone wear casual attire, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family via the Hatfield Funeral Chapel.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Viola Kiser
Viola Kiser, 81, of Caney Creek, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at her home.

Virginia May
Virginia May, 78, of Sidney, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, March 13, 1935, the daughter of the late Ireland Maynard and Clema Hughes Maynard.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffie May; three sons, Danny Edward May, Jessie James May, Robert Lee May; one daughter, Edith Jean Stanley (Jimmy); four sisters, Myrtle May, Ivory Thompson, Gail Ratliff and Darlene Kroger; two grandchildren, Christopher Todd May and Joseph Thomas James; and one great-grandchild, Isabella Weddington.
She is survived by two children, Roger Dale May (Brenda) of Belfry, and Janet James (Thomas) of Lower Johns Creek; one half-brother, Ray Fon Maynard of Paintsville; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Blackburn, Jimmy Stanley and Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the May Family Cemetery, Dix Fork. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Kathleen Slone
Kathleen Slone, 75, of McCarr, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013.
She was born in Pike County, June 30, 1938, the daughter of the late Earl and Ettie Abshire.
She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ogie Ester; her second husband, Ernest Slone; 11 brothers and sisters; and one grandson.
She is survived by two sons, Orville Estep of McCarr and Michael Estep of Freeburn; one daughter, Barbara Eldridge of Phelps; one brother, Harold Abshire of Mouthcard; one sister, Fayetta Griffith of Pikeville; 11 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Eagle's Nest Church, Freeburn, with the Rev. Bernard Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Estep Family Cemetery, McCarr. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.
