Jimmie Smith
Jimmie L. Smith, 83, of Phelps, died Friday Dec. 6, 2013, at Good Shepherd Nursing Center, Phelps.
He was born in Woodman, March 16, 1930, the son of the late Ballard and Betty Prater Smith.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of DAV Chapter #141, Belfry, VFW Post #10922, Phelps, and was of the Protestant faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Kevin; and three brothers, Brady, Bobby Lee and Irven.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Smith and Bobby Smith, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Alan Smith of Pennsylvania; one stepdaughter, Cheryl D. Smouse of Gainesville, Fla.; four brothers, Bradley Smith of Wellington, Royley Smith of Tennessee, and Roger Smith and Kenneth Smith, both of Princeton, W.Va.; one sister, Irene Stevens of Princeton; and eight grandchildren.
Private graveside services are to be held at Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Roger Taylor II
Roger Dale Taylor II, 44, of Williamson, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Trenton, Mich., April 15, 1969, the son of Roger Dale Taylor I of Graham, N.C., and Judy Gibson of Paintsville.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Faye and Corbett Tincher, and his paternal grandparents, Georgia and Cecil Rife.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Cindy Taylor; his stepfather, Jay Gibson; two brothers, Scott Taylor and Christopher Taylor, both of North Carolina; and one sister, Jimi-Jo Taylor of North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Geneva Epling
Geneva Robinson Epling, 87, of Indian Creek of Virgie, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born in Pike County, Sept. 26, 1926, the daughter of the late Patrick Robinson and Frankie McCown Robinson.
She was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Epling; one son, Michael R. Epling; and 10 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by three daughters, Judy Carol Gibson, Patty S. Belcher and Karen Pruitt; two sisters, Elizabeth Hunt of Pennsylvania and Ruby Joyce Simons of Michigan; eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Tony Baswell officiating. Burial will follow in the Newsome Branch Cemetery, Penny Road. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Christopher Fletcher
Christopher Anthony Whitt Fletcher, 23, of Chattaroy, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, in the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital Emergency Room.
He was born in Logan, W.Va., April 24, 1991, the son of Randall Fletcher of Chattaroy and Jackie Marcum Ray of Lovely.
He was employed by Double Quik at Goody and the Tunnell Drive Inn. He attended the Resolution "Rezo" Church.
He was preceded in death by his biological parents, Ethel Gillman Whitt and David Whitt; and one brother, Dwayne Whitt.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Samantha Whitt and Christina Whitt, both of Chattaroy, and Danielle Kirk of Inez; two half-brothers, Vince Ray and Aaron Ray, both of Lovely; one half-sister, Destiney Ray of Lovely; his grandparents, Matt and Dorsie Fletcher of Hatfield, Mary and Thomas Mann of Lovely, Dave and Cindy Marcum of Olive Hill, and Chester and Sara Gillman; two stepbrothers, Logan Slater of Chattaroy and Thomas Ray of Milo; and five stepsisters, Skyler Slater and Sierra Hamilton, both of Richmond, Kim Hensley of Dans Branch, W.Va., Tiffany Gore of Virginia and Jessica Ray of Wolf Creek;
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dale Merritt officiating. Burial followed in the Robinette Cemetery, Rockhouse. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Margaret France
Margaret Ann France, 48, of Pikeville, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at her home.
She was born in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 7, 1966, the daughter of the late Clarence Ray Billiter and Phyllis Robinson Billiter.
She was a customer service representative.
She is survived by her husband, Robert France of Pikeville; two sons, Robert Shannon France II and Steven Ray France, both of Pikeville; two brothers, Mike Billiter and David Billiter, both of Atlanta; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church with Belmont Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Billiter Family Cemetery, Greasy Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, with services nightly at 7.
William Gooslin
William C. Gooslin, 42, of McCarr, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at his home.
He was born in South Williamson, Oct. 3, 1971, the son of Clarence and Shirley Mae Gooslin.
He was a carpenter by trade.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David Lee Gooslin.
Beside his parents he is survived by his wife, Kathy Earnest Gooslin; one stepson, Tracy Allen West; one stepdaughter, Kandace Gooslin; one brother, Clarence Edward Gooslin of Newtown, W.Va.; and one sister, Pamela Sue Stuart of West Union, W.Va.
In respecting his wishes, he was cremated. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan, W.Va.
Kerry Newsome
Kerry Lee Newsome, 66, of Jenkins, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 2, 1947, the son of the late William Monroe Newsome and Callie Burke Newsome.
He was a U.S. Steel worker in blaster road construction and was of the Baptist faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carson Newsome and Tracy Newsome; and three sisters, JoNell, Marcie and Lona.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Stiltner Newsome; three sons, Curtis Allen Newsome, Kerry Lee Newsome Jr. and Karson Newsome; two daughters, Karina Collins and Karen Newsome; one brother, Terry Newsome; three sisters, June Arthur, Judith Johnson and Jennifer Evans; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, in the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church with Darrell Newsome and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Newsome Family Cemetery, Three-Mile Road, Jenkins. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday with special services at 7.
Billy Peck
Billy Ray Peck, 62, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in South Williamson, Sept. 22, 1951, the son of the late Ballard and Marie Clark Peck.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant child; two brothers, Robert Protuck and Kenneth Peck; and one sister, Betty Protuck Erwin.
He was a coal miner for nearly 43 years and was a member and elder of the Kingdom Harvest Church, Lenore, W.Va.
He is survived by his wife, Ava Jean Deeley Peck; four children, Billy James Peck, Rebecca Collins, Shannon Peck and Gina Peck, all of Delbarton; one brother, John Peck of Delbarton; one sister, Margaret Smith of New Castle, Va.; and three grandchildren, Kamryn and Brad Collins and Daegan Peck.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the Kingdom Harvest Church with the Revs. Tommy Canterbury Sr., Tommy Canterbury Jr., and Will Compton officiating. Burial will follow in the Protuck-Peck Cemetery, Lando, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.
"Spanky" Ramey
Darryll "Spanky" Anthony Ramey, 27, of Mouthcard, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014.
He was born in Pikeville, Jan. 7, 1987, the son of Robert Allen and Tina Dawn Mosley Ramey of Florence, S.C.
He attended Eastern Kentucky University and was of the Southern Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Alex "Rainmaker" Ramey Jr.; and his maternal grandparents, James and Jeanette Thornsbury.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Ann Ramey Slone (Jerry) of Mouthcard; and four sisters, Cindy Dawn Griffey of Steele and Amanda Nicole Ramey, Sara Anne Ramey and Victoria Beth Ramey, all of Florence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Mouthcard Baptist Church with Pastor Ben Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Arrangements are under direction of Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the church.
Danny Reese
Danny Chester Reese, 60, of Marrowbone, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Pikeville, Nov. 12, 1953, the son of the late Chester Reese and Mary Elizabeth Coleman Reese.
He was a mine foreman.
He is survived by one son, Daniel Reese of Hellier; one daughter, Kelly Reese Townes of Marrowbone; two brothers, Teddy Reese of Millard and Timmy Reese of Pikeville; two sisters, Becky Derry of Rockhouse and Gina Ramey of Elkhorn Creek; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Junior Cantrell, Roger Johnson, Neil Coleman, Jeremy Townes and Delon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the W.H. Coleman Cemetery, Wolfpit. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
