James Tibbs
James Tibbs, 69, of Shelbiana, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Pike County, Nov. 4, 1944, the son of the late Ed Tibbs and Charity Tibbs.
He was a retired deputy sheriff and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Orias Tibbs; one son, Jonathan Tibbs; one daughter, Barbara Adkins; three brothers, Jean Tibbs, Jack Tibbs and Charles Tibbs; one sister, Jill Tibbs; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Jack Adkins and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Anna Justice
Anna Louise Justice, 83, of Mouthcard, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
She was born January 30, 1931, at Mouthcard, the daughter of the late Hensley and Nonie Elswick Belcher.
She was a retired postmaster and a member of the Mouthcard Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, James Justice Jr.; and two brothers, Bobby Belcher of Mouthcard and Russell Belcher of Lancaster, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2014, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City, with Jimmy Kerr and Ben Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Frank D. McPeek
Franklin D. McPeek, 77, of Fort Pierce, Fla., formerly of Pike County, died July 23 at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
Glorice Robinette
Glorice G. Robinette, 76, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014.
She was born in Pikeville, the daughter of the late Curtis and Bertha Robinette.
She was a retired payroll clerk from IBM and a member of Pilgrim Home Old Regular Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother, John Lloyd Robinette of Pinsonfork; and a sister, Joyce Gilliam of Winchester.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 2, at Pilgrim Home Old Regular Baptist Church with Elder Richard Staton and Elder Hobert Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Alfred Young Cemetery, Varney.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, with church services starting at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
Gary Adams
Gary Lee Adams, 39, of Johns Branch, Raccoon, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, April 20, 1975, the son of David Fred Adams and Glema Slone Adams, both of Raccoon.
He was a truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Maria Crum Adams; two children, Laken Nichole Adams and Leanna Brooke Adams, both of Meally; two brothers, Scott D. Adams (Selma) of Raccoon and Robert K. Adams (Mickie) of Salyersville; and two nieces, Sky Lindsley and Cheyanne Dawn Adams.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Matthew May, Jack Justice and Brad Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Adams Cemetery, Lower Johns Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.
Lloyd Blankenship
Lloyd Blankenship, 67, of Jamboree, died Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born in Jamboree, Sept. 9, 1946, the son of the late Lloyd S. and Hattie Nicklos Blankenship.
Lloyd worked as a coal miner at the Old Ben Coal Company, Thacker, W.Va., and was a mechanic. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America, the NRA and loved hunting, fishing and horseback riding. Lloyd was a wonderful husband, a great dad and was a kind-hearted man.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Blankenship and Bobby Gene Blankenship; and one sister, Betty Ann Blankenship.
He is survived by his wife, Orpha Mayhorn Blankenship; one son, Lancel Blankenship of Jamboree; one daughter, Jeannie Charles (Robin) of Morrisburg, Tenn.; one brother, Jessie Blankenship of Dunlow, W.Va.; three sisters, Vivian Kay Blankenship of Jamboree, Nervie Whitt of Ohio and Marylyn Stacy of Grundy, Va.; two grandchildren, Robbie Charles of Morrisburg and Emily Elizabeth Dawn Blankenship of Grapevine; one great-grandchild, Kami Kathleen Bailey; his best hunting buddy, Mike Hurley (Charlotte) of Jamboree; and friends who were like brothers, Roger Lester (Geneva) of Phelps, Larry Lester (Gail) of Stopover, Ralph Lester (Joanne) of Jamboree, Carl Ray Lester (Jan) of Jamboree; and a friend like a sister, Reba Sue Bain of Jamboree.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with Herbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Lester Family Cemetery, Abes Branch, Jamboree. Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday.
Joe Browning
Joe R. Browning, 77, of Thacker, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born at Thacker, Sept. 7, 1936, the son of the late Joe Browning Sr. and Hulda Church Browning.
He was a retired coal miner, having worked as a diesel mechanic, and was a member of the Jesus Name Tabernacle of Thacker.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Browning; three daughters, Joann Looney of South Williamson, Carrie Hager of Blackberry and Kathy Jackson of Thacker; one son, Chris Browning of Thacker; two brothers, Roy “Bootie” Browning of Hardy and Albert Browning of Sharon, Wis.; one sister, Lucille Borrego of Blackberry; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bill Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Browning Family Cemetery, Thacker. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W.Va.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday with services nightly at 7.
Artheda Chaney
Artheda Chaney, 75, of Hellier, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at the home of her sister.
She was born in Hellier, Oct. 9, 1938, the daughter of the late Watt Tackett and Lula Lawson Bowling.
She was a cook and a member of the Allegheny Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Thomas Chaney; two sons, Dewayne Shell and Randy Lee Shell; one brother, Don Lawson; and two sisters, Brenda Gail Bevins and Mary Evelyn Tackett.
She is survived by one son, Paul Shell of Lookout; five daughters, Sarah Slone of Pikeville, Brenda Griggs of Lookout, Theda Boettcher of Marrowbone, and Terrie Rose and Tonya Shell, both of Millard; two brothers, Ray Tackett and Tommy Tackett, both of Allegheny; two sisters, Sharon Newsome and Lois Mullins, both of Allegheny; 17 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Ray Tackett, Pete Newsome, Oscar Damron and Nick Baldridge officiating. Burial will follow in the Robinson Cemetery, Allegheny. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Jack Coleman
Jack Edward Coleman, 60, of Pikeville, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 9, 1954, the son of the late Arvil and Magdalene Thornsbury Coleman.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Gene Coleman; one stepsister, Brenda Sayers; and two stepbrothers, Roger Sayers and Jimmy Sayers.
He is survived by two sons, Jason Coleman and Chad Coleman, both of Pikeville; one brother, Glenn Coleman of Pikeville; two stepsisters, Eloise Sarooi and Sherry Sayers; one stepbrother, Jerry Sayers; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Monday, Aug. 4, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Meeks and Ernie Justice officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.
“J.D.” Hickman
John David “J.D.” Hickman, 73, of Phelps, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at his home.
He was born at Thacker, W.Va., May 9, 1941, the son of the late John and Hazel O’Brian Hickman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, John Franklin Hickman; three brothers, Charles Hickman, James Hickman and Jack Hickman; and two sisters, Doris Hickman and Geraldine McCoy.
J.D. was the owner of Justine’s Flowers at Phelps and was employed by the Pike County Board of Education. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Church of God in Jesus’ Name at Phelps and served as chairman of the board of Phelps Volunteer Fire & Rescue.
He was also a member of DAV Chapter 169 of Betsy Layne, a past master of the Thomas DeVenny lodge # 928, Freeburn, and a member of El Hasa Temple, Ashland.
At one time, J.D. was an avid golfer and bowler and was a former race car driver at the Flat Rock Speedway in Flat Rock, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Justine Stump Hickman; one daughter, Mirhonda Lynn (Don) Page of Phelps; three sisters, Laura (Orville) Dotson, Jan Archer and Edith (Daris) Stump, all of Bean Station, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Kolbe Aaron Page (Brittni) and Garrett McKinley “Mac” Page (Candace) both of Phelps, Jonathan James Hickman (Samantha) of Georgetown, Jordan Douglas Hickman (Hailey) of Winchester, Whitney Blankenship of Phelps and Alexis & Savannah Hickman, both of Yeager, W.Va.; one great-grandchild, Jonathan James Hickman Jr. of Georgetown; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the Church of God in Jesus’ Name, Phelps, with the Rev. Opie Ray Harris officiating. Entombment followed in the J.U. Thacker Memorial Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.
Graveside military services were conducted by D.A.V. Chapter #141, Belfry.
Family and friends served as pallbearers.
